Book Chemistry of Aquatic Systems Local and Global Perspectives

Download or read book Chemistry of Aquatic Systems Local and Global Perspectives written by Giovanni Bidoglio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic systems play a salient role in the complex processes of energy and matter exchange between the geosphere and the atmosphere. For example, reactions taking place in cloud water droplets can substantially alter the atmospheric budget and chemistry of trace gases; pollution induced weathering reactions at water/soil interfaces can affect the availability of nutrients and increase the concentration of potentially toxic metals in groundwaters. Moreover, the inextricable links between the water cycle, the geosphere and the atmosphere ensure that apparently localized environmental problems have increasingly impacts in other parts of the world. To identify local-to-global scale variables associated with environmental changes, a focus must be placed on the recognition of processes, rather than a continued reliance on monitoring state variables. However, in heterogeneous aquatic systems, small scale aspects of a process under observation may not be summed directly to obtain regional estimates because of process nonlinearities with change in scale. To understand this, the integrated use of measurements across a range of scales is required.

Download or read book Water Security written by Chrispin Kowenje and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, deterioration of global fresh water resources is the most challenging question and it has become one of the forefront scientific and political agenda in relation to global environmental changes in climate, land-use, and bio-diversity. Water is not adequately available in required quantity and quality in many parts of the world especially in developing countries. Water still remains to be an essential component of life, and hence governments and other agents need to work on securing water to the society. Water security is regarded as the capacity of a population to safeguard sustainable access to adequate quantities of acceptable quality of water for sustaining livelihoods, human well-being, and socio-economic development. Thus, finding solutions to water security and related problems through strong collabo-ration among researchers, stakeholders, governments, non-governmental organizations and the communities is required. Therefore, stakeholders need to meet in a discussion forum such as expert workshop to explore water security related problems and to develop mitigation measures. The expert workshop also creates a co-learning environ-ment among different experts and knowledge exchange through experiences from different parts of the world. The workshop in Mekelle, Ethiopia of the Sub-Saharan Regional Network of Exceed Swindon focused on a multidisciplinary approach to water security challenges and its solutions with special emphasis on distribution and availability of fresh and drinking waters, water scarcity, quality and pollution aspects of water, water governance, trans- boundary water resources management, and other related issues, among which are the drivers land-use systems and climatic conditions.

Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. The Editors of this work have taken every measure to include the many suggestions received from readers and ensure comprehensiveness of coverage and added value in this 2nd edition The esteemed Board of Volume Editors and Editors-in-Chief worked cohesively to ensure a uniform and consistent approach to the content, which is an amazing accomplishment for a 15-volume work (16 volumes including index volume)!

Book Modelling the Fate of Chemicals in the Environment and the Human Body

Download or read book Modelling the Fate of Chemicals in the Environment and the Human Body written by Philippe Ciffroy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on modelling the fate of chemicals in the environment and the human body to arrive at an integrated exposure assessment. It covers five broad topics, namely: future challenges in exposure assessment; the evolution of human health and environmental risk assessment; standard documentation for exposure models; modelling different environmental components (i.e. surface waters, atmosphere, soil, groundwater, plants, aquatic organisms and mammals); and the fate of contaminants in humans. This work draws on the authors’ and editors’ extensive experience and a range of different research activities, including case studies, that have led to the development of MERLIN-Expo, a standardised software package for simulating the fate of chemicals in the main environmental systems and in the human body in an integrated manner. It will be of considerable interest to researchers and students, risk managers, and policy- and decision-makers whose work involves environmental protection and human health.

This book was released on 1995-11-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SCOPE, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment, was established by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) in 1969 as an international, non to governmental, non-profit organisation with the mandate - advance knowledge of the influence of humans on their environment, as well as the effects of these environmental changes upon people, their health and their welfare with particular attention to those influences and effects which are either global or shared by several nations; - to serve as a non-governmental, interdisciplinary and international council of scien tists and as a source of advice for the benefit of governments and intergovernmental and non-governmental bodies with respect to environmental problems. SCOPE has been established because critical environmental concerns call for a thor ough evaluation of the issues at stake, an assessment of their consequences at global and regional levels and the formulation of possible solutions. Through its activities SCOPE identifies available knowledge, then synthesizing it to point out where gaps and uncertainties exist, and to recommend where efforts should be concentrated to develop explanations and solutions.

Book Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fluxes and Processes

Download or read book Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fluxes and Processes written by A. Tremblay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time when an unquestionable link between anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and climatic changes has finally been acknowledged and * widely documented through IPCC reports, the need for precise estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) production rates and emissions from natural as well as managed ecosystems has risen to a critical level. Future agreements between nations concerning the reduction of their GHG emissions will - pend upon precise estimates of the present level of these emissions in both natural and managed terrestrial and aquatic environments. From this viewpoint, the present volume should prove to a benchmark contribution because it provides very carefully assessed values for GHG emissions or exchanges between critical climatic zones in aquatic en- ronments and the atmosphere. It also provides unique information on the biases of different measurement methods that may account for some of the contradictory results that have been published recently in the literature on this subject. Not only has a large array of current measurement methods been tested concurrently here, but a few new approaches have also been developed, notably laser measurements of atmospheric CO concentration 2 gradients. Another highly useful feature of this book is the addition of - nitoring and process studies as well as modeling.
