Download or read book Bioinorganic Chemistry written by D.P. Kessissoglou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioinorganic chemistry is primarily concerned with the role of metal atoms in biology and is a very active research field. However, even though such important structures of metalloenzymes are known, as the MoFeCo of nitrogenase, Cu or Mn superoxide dismutase and plastocyanin, the synthetic routes to the modelling of such centers remains a matter of acute scientific interest. Other metalloenzymes, such as the Mn center of the oxygen evolving complex of PSII, are still the focus of in-depth examination, both spectroscopic and structural. Another area of concern is the interaction between drugs and metals and metal ion antagonism. Understanding the chemistry of metal ions in biological systems will bring benefits in terms of understanding such problems as biomineralization and the production of advanced materials by micro-organisms. The 29 contributions to Bioinorganic Chemistry: An Inorganic Perspective of Life give an excellent summary of the state of the art in this field, covering areas from the NMR of paramagnetic molecules to the use of lanthanide porphyrins in artificial batteries.

Download or read book Peptide And Protein Engineering For Biotechnological And Therapeutic Applications written by Pierre Rousselot-pailley and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-01-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peptides and proteins are crucial biomolecules in life. The manifold functions they carry out range from molecular recognition and signaling to catalysis and immune response. However, the native systems are limited to a reduced toolbox of chemical functionalities as well as tridimensional structures. Widening these toolboxes could pave the way to engineer peptides and proteins with enhanced properties compared to their native counterparts and/or with structures and functions unprecedented in Nature. Advances in the chemical and biological synthesis of peptides and proteins, in computational tools, in molecular biology and in high-throughput screening methods are making this realm possible. This book aims to give an overview of the last developments in the field of peptide and protein engineering. It comprises a collection of chapters that span from the production of simple non-proteinogenic building blocks and peptidic scaffolds of different sizes and structures to more complex systems including peptide-based nanomaterials, enzymes and artificial metalloenzymes. Different strategies are described where chemical and biological tools have been developed and combined to attain the desired properties and sought functionalities. The diverse systems described in this book highlight the progress in this important field and represent the starting points for the development of functional biomolecules, biomaterials and hybrid systems capable of addressing key societal challenges of our times in relevant areas such health, environment and energy.

This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 1975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their numerous analogs and derivatives are materials of tremendous importance in chemistry, materials science, physics, biology and medicine. They are the red color in blood (heme) and the green in leaves (chlorophyll); they are also excellent ligands that can coordinate with almost every metal in the Periodic Table. Grounded in natural systems, porphyrins are incredibly versatile and can be modified in many ways; each new modification yields derivatives, demonstrating new chemistry, physics and biology, with a vast array of medicinal and technical applications. As porphyrins are currently employed as platforms for study of theoretical principles and applications in a wide variety of fields, the Handbook of Porphyrin Science represents a timely ongoing series dealing in detail with the synthesis, chemistry, physicochemical and medical properties and applications of polypyrrole macrocycles. Professors Karl Kadish, Kevin Smith and Roger Guilard are internationally recognized experts in the research field of porphyrins, each having his own separate area of expertise in the field. Between them, they have published over 1500 peer-reviewed papers and edited more than three dozen books on diverse topics of porphyrins and phthalocyanines. In assembling the new volumes of this unique handbook, they have selected and attracted the very best scientists in each sub-discipline as contributing authors. This handbook will prove to be a modern authoritative treatise on the subject as it is a collection of up-to-date works by world-renowned experts in the field. Complete with hundreds of figures, tables and structural formulas, and thousands of literature citations, all researchers and graduate students in this field will find the Handbook of Porphyrin Science an essential, major reference source for many years to come.

Download or read book Biosensors for Security and Bioterrorism Applications written by Dimitrios P. Nikolelis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-12 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers comprehensive coverage of biomarker/biosensor interactions for the rapid detection of weapons of bioterrorism, as well as current research trends and future developments and applications. It will be useful to researchers in this field who are interested in new developments in the early detection of such. The authors have collected very valuable and, in some aspects indispensable experience in the area i.e. in the development and application of portable biosensors for the detection of potential hazards. Most efforts are centered on the development of immunochemical assays including flow-lateral systems and engineered antibodies and their fragments. In addition, new approaches to the detection of enzyme inhibitors, direct enzymatic and microbial detection of metabolites and nutrients are elaborated. Some realized prototypes and concept devices applicable for the further use as a basis for the cooperation programs are also discussed. There is a particular focus on electrochemical and optical detection systems, including those employing carbon nanotubes, quantum dots and metalnanoparticles. The authors are well-known scientists and most of them are editors of respected international scientific journals. Although recently developed biosensors utilize known principles, the biosensing devices described can significantly shorten the time required for successful detection and enhance efforts in more time-consuming directions, e.g. remote sensing systems and validation in real-sample analysis. The authors describe advances in all stages of biosensor development: theselection of biochemical components, their use in biosensor assembly, detection principles and improvements and applications for real sample assays.
