Book excerpt: ROYAL HARLEY IS DRIVEN TO SEEK ABSOLUTION for the evil he has committed, and approval from his dead father whom he never could please. He marries deplorably innocent young Tilda Ullmann and soon she understands the terrible mistake she has made. Royal, all charm and magnetism, is also an abuser. He finds he is unable to make a union with his bride because in his skewed mind she is saintly, unlike other women whom he sees as craven. It is at the turn of the last century when America went to war with Spain. To achieve his goal, Royal volunteers to join Teddy Roosevelt and his band of cowboys and playboys in Cuba, but finds himself instead serving in the Philippine Islands. Tilda joins him there and incites Royal's fury when she meets young Lieutenant Evan Winslow who soon declares his love for her. Royal doggedly pursues his quest to find redemption by some deed of valor, which ultimately takes him deep into the untamed Cordelliera jungle of Luzon where his hideous act of betrayal finally forces him to face himself and see what is there. Tilda comes to believe that she has found a way out of her entrapment.

Book Archetypes

  • Author : Elémire Zolla

Download or read book Archetypes written by Elémire Zolla and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man is dominated by his archetypes; they mould not only his history but his dreams. But how are we to define and evaluate them? Is it perhaps possible for us to relate more creatively to them? Originally published in 1981, these are some of the questions raised by this title. To answer them the author gathered together a vast amount of material drawn from Eastern and Western traditions, from science, literature, art and poetry. The answers he puts forward are often highly original and will surely challenge many of our most cherished patterns of thought. There emerges from this book what can only be described as a global metaphysical system, yet the author’s language is not that of an ordinary metaphysical treatise, and what he writes offered new challenge and hope to those suffering from the despair and cynicism engendered by a great deal in modern society at the time. Zolla does not, however, advocate a return to earlier historical patterns, nor is he proposing a new Utopia, but rather offers us a brilliant series of lessons in the art of centring. In the words of Bernard Wall, writing in the Times Literary Supplement, Zolla’s ‘deep, polymathic probing of the terms of human existence makes it sensible to compare him with Simone Weil, while some of his conclusions about ultimate mysteries – expressed in signs, symbols and sacraments, the sense of which we have lost – will make us think of the later T. S. Eliot’.

Download or read book The Eternal Frontier written by Tim Flannery and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2015-01-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of the continent, “full of engaging and attention-catching information about North America’s geology, climate, and paleontology” (The Washington Post Book World). Here, “the rock star of modern science” tells the unforgettable story of the geological and biological evolution of the North American continent, from the time of the asteroid strike that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago to the present day (Jared Diamond, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel). Flannery describes the development of North America’s deciduous forests and other flora, and tracks the migrations of various animals to and from Europe, Asia, and South America, showing how plant and animal species have either adapted or become extinct. The story spans the massive changes wrought by the ice ages and the coming of the Native Americans. It continues right up to the present, covering the deforestation of the Northeast, the decimation of the buffalo, and other consequences of frontier settlement and the industrial development of the United States. This is science writing at its very best—both an engrossing narrative and a scholarly trove of information that “will forever change your perspective on the North American continent” (The New York Review of Books).

Book Ideas Interests and Foreign Aid

Download or read book Ideas Interests and Foreign Aid written by A. Maurits van der Veen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do countries give foreign aid? Although many countries have official development assistance programs, this book argues that no two of them see the purpose of these programmes in the same way. Moreover, the way countries frame that purpose has shaped aid policy choices past and present. The author examines how Belgium long gave aid out of a sense of obligation to its former colonies, The Netherlands was more interested in pursuing international influence, Italy has focused on the reputational payoffs of aid flows and Norwegian aid has had strong humanitarian motivations since the beginning. But at no time has a single frame shaped any one country's aid policy exclusively. Instead, analysing half a century of legislative debates on aid in these four countries, this book presents a unique picture both of cross-national and over time patterns in the salience of different aid frames and of varying aid programmes that resulted.
