Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religion of Life examines the interconnections and relationship between Catholicism and eugenics in early twentieth-century Chile. Specifically, it demonstrates that the popularity of eugenic science was not diminished by the influence of Catholicism there. In fact, both eugenics and Catholicism worked together to construct the concept of a unique Chilean race, la raza chilena. A major factor that facilitated this conceptual overlap was a generalized belief among historical actors that male and female gender roles were biologically determined and therefore essential to a functioning society. As the first English-language study of eugenics in Chile, The Religion of Life surveys a wide variety of different materials (periodicals, newspapers, medical theses, and monographs) produced by Catholic and secular intellectuals from the first half of the twentieth century. What emerges from this examination is not only a more complex rendering of the relationship between religion and science but also the development of White supremacist logics in a Latin American context.

Book Life in Debt

Book excerpt: Chile is widely known as the first experiment in neoliberalism in Latin America, carried out and made possible through state violence. Since the beginning of the transition in 1990, the state has pursued a national project of reconciliation construed as debts owed to the population. The state owed a "social debt" to the poor accrued through inequalities generated by economic liberalization, while society owed a "moral debt" to the victims of human rights violations. Life in Debt invites us into lives and world of a poor urban neighborhood in Santiago. Tracing relations and lives between 1999 and 2010, Clara Han explores how the moral and political subjects imagined and asserted by poverty and mental health policies and reparations for human rights violations are refracted through relational modes and their boundaries. Attending to intimate scenes and neighborhood life, Han reveals the force of relations in the making of selves in a world in which unstable work patterns, illness, and pervasive economic indebtedness are aspects of everyday life. Lucidly written, Life in Debt provides a unique meditation on both the past inhabiting actual life conditions but also on the difficulties of obligation and achievements of responsiveness.

Book Life Stories of Graduate Students in Chile and the United States

Download or read book Life Stories of Graduate Students in Chile and the United States written by Marta Silva and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this cross-national study was to gain a more comprehensive understanding about doctoral students in the United States and Chile and how their decisions to pursue a career in the life sciences field occurred throughout their lives. . I interviewed 15 doctoral students from the Seven Lakes University (Chile) and 15 students from the West Coast University (US), using a life history approach. Analyses revealed that the degree of flexibility in the schooling system and the degree of individualism and collectivism of the social groups in which the students were learning science seemed to influence the informants' vocational decisions in three interrelated processes: (1) Deciding the informants' degree of interest and ability in science by the opportunity of choosing science classes and activities. The highly tracked Chilean system socializes students to science at an early age. The more flexible school system in the US enabled the interviewees to gradually decide about pursuing their interest in science; (2) Experiencing science as a collective learning process for the Chilean informants and an individualistic learning process for the US students; (3) Perceiving science differently at each life stage for both groups of interviewees including: Playing science, Studying science, Doing science, Working in science, Practicing Science in their doctoral programs.

Book Understanding Persistence Through University Climate Assessment

Download or read book Understanding Persistence Through University Climate Assessment written by Maria J. De Los Rios and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was, first, to provide a portrait of first-year students' perceptions of the university climate at two Chilean universities located in Santiago Metropolitan area; and, second, to examine the relationship between these perceptions and students' plans to enroll at their institutions for a second year of studies. As little to none research on students' perceptions of the university climate in Chile has been conducted, this study presents an effort to start filling that gap in the Chilean higher education research. This work builds upon Hurtado et al.'s (2012) Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (MMDLE), which is a multidimensional and multicontextual approach to analyzing college climate. Additionally, this research endeavor includes the adaptation, translation, and administration of the Diverse Learning Environments (DLE) survey assessment instrument based on the MMDLE framework. The survey was administered to first-year students at two Chilean universities, and it provides new data about students' perceptions of college climate in Chile. This study offers new insights into the relationship of first-year students' perceptions of university climate and first-to-second-year persistence in the Chilean context. Further, since the DLE measures were disaggregated by social identity groups, this study also offers a portrait of how students perceive university climate during their first year of studies depending on their sex and LGBTQ, indigenous, and social class identities.

Book The Quest for Equity in Chile s Higher Education

Download or read book The Quest for Equity in Chile s Higher Education written by María Verónica Santelices and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chile during the last forty years, there have been important initiatives aimed at increasing equity in higher education, including the private provision of tertiary education starting in 1980, the growing support provided by the state to low-income students through financial aid, the increasing importance of institutional financial aid, a university admissions system that has made efforts to reduce the important weight standardized test scores have traditionally had in admissions decisions and institutional-level programs implemented to broadened the admission of low income students to selective institutions. This book seeks to describe the concurrent efforts undertaken both at the national and at the institutional level to increase equity in access to higher education and educational outcomes in Chile during the last four decades. Taking stock of the accomplishments of Chile´s higher education system is especially important at a time when social demands and political decisions seem to deeply question the road traveled.
