Book An Enormous Crime

Download or read book An Enormous Crime written by Bill Hendon and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An Enormous Crime is nothing less than shocking. Based on thousands of pages of public and previously classified documents, it makes an utterly convincing case that when the American government withdrew its forces from Vietnam, it knowingly abandoned hundreds of POWs to their fate. The product of twenty-five years of research by former Congressman Bill Hendon and attorney Elizabeth A. Stewart, this book brilliantly reveals the reasons why these American soldiers and airmen were held back by the North Vietnamese at Operation Homecoming in 1973, what these brave men have endured, and how administration after administration of their own government has turned its back on them. This authoritative exposé is based on open-source documents and reports, and thousands of declassified intelligence reports and satellite imagery, as well as author interviews and personal experience. An Enormous Crime is a singular work, telling a story unlike any other in our history: ugly, harrowing, and true.

Book Mathematical Models in Developmental Biology

Download or read book Mathematical Models in Developmental Biology written by Jerome K. Percus and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The path from relatively unstructured egg to full organism is one of the most fascinating trajectories in the biological sciences. Its complexity calls for a very high level of organization, with an array of subprocesses in constant communication with each other. These notes introduce an interleaved set of mathematical models representative of research in the last few decades, as well as the techniques that have been developed for their solution. Such models offer an effective way of incorporating reliable data in a concise form, provide an approach complementary to the techniques of molecular biology, and help to inform and direct future research. Titles in this series are co-published with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Black Lives Matter and #MeToo are two of the most prominent twenty-first-century social movements in the United States. On the ground and on social media, more people have taken an active stance in support of either or both movements than almost any others in the country's history. Social Movements and the Law brings together the voices of twelve scholars and public intellectuals to explore how Black Lives Matter and #MeToo unfolded-separately and together-and how they enrich, inform, and complicate each other. Structured in dialogues and punctuated with informative text boxes, illustrations, and discussion questions, this accessible guide to an increasingly influential area of the law centers rich intersectional analysis of both movements and prompts readers to undertake further reflection and conversation. At a time of heightened public attention to the broader scholarly study of human social behavior and interaction, this book shows rather than tells how people with different perspectives can engage one another with open minds and a generosity of spirit"--

Book A Mere Machine

  • Author : Anna Harvey
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2013-11-28
  • ISBN : 0300199198
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book A Mere Machine written by Anna Harvey and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introductory textbooks on American government tell us that the Supreme Court is independent from the elected branches and that independent courts better protect rights than their more deferential counterparts. But are these facts or myths? In this groundbreaking new work, Anna Harvey reports evidence showing that the Supreme Court is in fact extraordinarily deferential to congressional preferences in its constitutional rulings. Analyzing cross-national evidence, Harvey also finds that the rights protections we enjoy in the United States appear to be largely due to the fact that we do not have an independent Supreme Court. In fact, we would likely have even greater protections for political and economic rights were we to prohibit our federal courts from exercising judicial review altogether. Harvey’s findings suggest that constitutional designers would be wise to heed Thomas Jefferson’s advice to “let mercy be the character of the law-giver, but let the judge be a mere machine.&rdquo
