Book excerpt: Featuring many familiar Malaysian folk characters, both human and animal, this collection of tales provides an entertaining window into Malaysian cultural values and ideals. Both product and process are included. Most of the stories are presented as first collected in Malay, then translated into English and augmented through research and discussion. The finished tales often provide a fusion of differing versions. Sometimes a character barely mentioned in one version of a tale turns out to have a more significant role in another version. And sometimes separate versions of a tale include different adventures of the same central character. Many of these alternatives are incorporated to enrich the finished stories for dramatization and help provide gentle moral lessons--as well as entertainment for children of all ages. The finished play scripts for presentation by actors for Children's Theatre--or for presentation by the children themselves--are developed for presentation in a classroom as well as on a stage, with no sets, costumes, or props required. The actors (in neutral clothing) become the set pieces as well as characters and narrators in the tales, and they mime the props. Producers of the plays, of course, can add sets, costumes and props to enhance performances. In addition, there are story narratives ready for teachers of language or theatre arts to development as classroom exercises with their students. Likewise the Readers Theatre selections illustrate a range of staging methods, from reading in place to full enactment of scripts--again, with costumes, props, and scenery optional. The original impetus for the book was the interest of teachers of English in the primary schools near the University of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur when these plays were presented for their students. Their sense of the educational as well as the entertainment value of the play presentations prompted this documentation of the process, from story collection through finished dramatizations.

He had honed the technique of talking with apparent openness and using that talk as a decoy duck: while you were listening to it quack around the pond, you weren't noticing all the others hiding in the reeds. What follows includes tales that Reggie told repeatedly but, on the whole, it's about what Reggie didn't tell me. So begins a stunning personal account of a Eurasian family living in Malaya. Reggie was the author's father, and one of the many gaps in his account of his family was that his mother was Eurasian. When Rebecca Kenneison discovered this omission after his death, she set out to learn more about her extended family on the other side of the world. Her voyage of discovery is compelling in itself, but Playing for Malaya has a much larger purpose. Set in the 1930s and 1940s, it recounts the experiences of an extended Eurasian family during the invasion and occupation of Malaya by the Japanese. Colonial society considered Eurasians insufficiently European to be treated as British, but during the Pacific War they seemed all too European to the Japanese, who subjected the Eurasian community to discrimination and worse. Because many Eurasians, including members of the Kenneison family, supported the Allied cause, their wartime experiences are an extraordinary account of tragedy, heroism and endurance, presented here with great eloquence and clarity.

Book excerpt: ‘A song, so old and yet still famous’ is a Malay expression of admiration for an exotic singing style, a musical contemplation on the beauty of nature, God, and love. The ghazal exists in manifold cultures all over Asia, Africa, and Southern Europe, and is intimately connected to Islam and its periphery. In each region, ghazals have been shaped into other expressions using imported features and transforming them into ‘local art’. In the Malay world, ghazals come in various shapes and with different meanings. ‘The song, so old’ is the song that came before the proliferation of mass media. The first ghazals that were heard in the Malay world might have been those ghazals performed by Hindustani musicians traveling in Southeast Asia. However, later on, the ghazal’s development was additionally triggered by mass media, with technological progress enhancing change in urban entertainment and introducing new sources of further adaptations. In this context, the second half line of the lyrics mentioned, ‘and yet still famous’, means that despite being old, the song is highly regarded as an art in itself. Malay ghazals are still attractive and musically demanding. They were traditionally not performed for mass appeal, but, rather, for a small knowledgeable audience that valued musical refinement and taste.
