Book Children of the French Empire

Download or read book Children of the French Empire written by Owen White and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-11-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book vividly recreates the lives of the children born of relationships between French men and African women from the time France colonized much of West Africa towards the end of the nineteenth century, until independence in 1960. Set within the context of the history of miscegenation in colonial French West Africa, the study focuses upon the lives and identities of the resulting mixed-race or métis population, and their struggle to overcome the handicaps they faced in a racially divided society. Owen White has drawn a valuable evaluation of the impact and importance of French racial theories, and offers a critical discussion of colonial policies in such areas as citizenship and education, providing original insights into problems of identity in colonial society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems incredible that heretofore there has not been an introductory anthology of African epics presented in English. Western literary culture has long emphasized the heritage of such well-known epics as the Iliad, the Odyssey, and Aeneid. But it is only recently that scholars have turned their attention toward capturing the rich oral tradition that is still alive in Africa. The twenty-five excerpts in this volume have been selected and introduced so as to offer English-speaking readers a broad sample of the extensive epic traditions in Africa. The general introduction and the background on each epic will enable readers to understand the context of each epic and will also provide leads for further inquiry.

Kessler's poetic text has rhythm and repetition and Schoenherr's artwork is striking. -Booklist, boxed review. This lovely book, with its descriptions of the desert terrain and bits of tribal wisdom, provides an informative glimpse at a distant lifestyle that will be useful in the classroom and as a read-aloud.In these days of growing intolerance it's important to give kids a look at other cultures so they will know that different isn't better or worse, good or bad-just different. It is particularly relevant right now,. This book shows the gentle and more common side of Islam, and makes kids realize all that they share. Muhamad loves his family, above all, just like any other kid in the world-of any religion. One Night-a story from the desert received a boxed review from Booklist, a starred review from Publisher's Weekly, and a very positive review from the New York Times. It was also recognized by:- A Book Links "A Few Good Books of the Year" Selection, 1995,- A Bank Street College "Best Books of 1995" Selection- One Night was also included in an educational game in the U.K. in 1998, which was presented in the Literature Section of the Guardian newspaper. Book West African ulam and Salafism in Mecca and Medina

Download or read book West African ulam and Salafism in Mecca and Medina written by Chanfi Ahmed and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chanfi Ahmed shows how West African ʿulamāʾ, who fled the European colonization of their region to settle in Mecca and Medina, helped the regime of King Ibn Sa’ud at its beginnings in the field of teaching and spreading the Salafῑ-Wahhabῑ’s Islam both inside and outside Saudi Arabia. This is against the widespread idea of considering the spread of the Salafῑ-Wahhābῑ doctrine as being the work of ʿulamāʾ from Najd (Central Arabia) only. We learn here that the diffusion of this doctrine after 1926 was much more the work of ʿulamāʾ from other parts of the Muslim World who had already acquired this doctrine and spread it in their countries by teaching and publishing books related to it. In addition Chanfi Ahmed demonstrates that concerning Islamic reform and mission (daʿwa), Africans are not just consumers, but also thinkers and designers.

This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kemper’s majestic account of Barth’s journey restores the reputation of an explorer who was as passionate about science as he was about rigorous travel. It’s an enthralling adventure, captivatingly told." —Ziauddin Sardar, Times (London) In 1840 Heinrich Barth joined a small British expedition into unexplored regions of Islamic North and Central Africa. One by one his companions died, but he carried on alone, eventually reaching the fabled city of gold, Timbuktu. His five-and-a-half-year, 10,000-mile trek ranks among the greatest journeys in the annals of exploration, and his discoveries are considered indispensable by modern scholars of Africa. In this historical adventure, the first book about Barth in English, Kemper goes a long way toward rescuing this fascinating figure from obscurity.

Book The History of Libya

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bukola A. Oyeniyi
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2019-03-22
  • ISBN : 1440856079
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The History of Libya written by Bukola A. Oyeniyi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covers Libyan history from the prehistoric period through the Phoenician, Roman, and Islamic/Ottoman periods to Italian colonization, independence, and the 2011 uprising and civil war. Libya experienced its own Arab Spring in February of 2011, ultimately leading to a civil war in which different groups have since been vying for power. How did the events of Libya's past lead to this point? This addition to the Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations series takes a chronological approach to examining Libyan history. Considering the history of Libya from its earliest times to the present, it features government records, memoirs, and diaries and provides a general overview of the history of Libya as well as a discussion on geography. While not discounting the contributions of traders and invaders to Libya's history, this book, unlike others, identifies and traces the histories of indigenous Libyans, showcasing their achievements while situating them within the broader context of contact with Libya had by groups of people from Europe to the Arabian Peninsula. By demonstrating that Libyans had their own unique history prior to colonization, the book works to essentially decolonize Libyan history. Rounding out the chapters are a timeline, glossary, appendix of notable people, and annotated bibliography.

Book The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children s Issues Worldwide 6 volumes

Download or read book The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children s Issues Worldwide 6 volumes written by Irving Epstein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-12-30 with total page 3026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the skyrocketing AIDS rate in Haiti to the oppressive pollution in industrial China, from the violent street culture of Nigeria to the crippling poverty in Nicaragua, from child trafficking in Thailand to child marriages in India, this jam-packed six-volume set explores all these issues and more in an unprecedented look at the world's children at the dawn of the 21st century. In recent years, while many countries have enjoyed a higher standard of living and improved working conditions, others have been torn apart by war and incapacitated by famine, and are struggling to improve life for their children and their future. Recent concern over the world's children has resulted in a global attempt to define what constitutes an acceptable childhood. New attention has been paid, not only to healthcare and secondary education, but also to the right to play and increased access to technology. The UN's codification of children's rights has done much to expand our understanding of what is needed for healthy growth and development of children and youth. Organized by region, The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Children's Issues Worldwide is the first globally focused set of this magnitude, offering extensive, up-to-date coverage of these critical issues. Original chapters accessibly synthesize current data on key topics, including education, play and recreation, child labor, family, health, laws and legal status, religious life, abuse and neglect, and growing up in the 21st century.

Book Popular Intellectuals and Social Movements

Download or read book Popular Intellectuals and Social Movements written by Michiel Baud and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All forms of popular protest include a category of 'popular intellectuals', who reflect on social reality, speak in the name of popular classes and who articulate ideas that inspire collective action. This volume focuses on these individuals from an original angle: it looks at the experiences of popular intellectuals in non-western societies, who operate within social-movement networks that link local, regional, and international arenas, and connect to a global flow of ideas. Eight case studies on different societies in twentieth-century Asia, Africa, and Latin America highlight specific activist intellectuals.
