Book Children s Responses to Televised Adaptations of Literature

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1989 school year a sample of third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students from two public elementary schools, one in Minneapolis, Minnesota and another in Amherst, Massachusetts, participated in an investigation to explore children's responses to televised adaptations of literature. Their responses to three works were selected for final evaluation: Anne of Green Gables, The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe and Taking Care of Terrific. Students were surveyed to identify favorite authors, books, television programs and least favorite genres to read/watch. Students wrote letters to the authors of the selected books and to the producers of the adaptations. These letters were evaluated using reader response theory. A survey of students comparisons of the three television adaptations with the original literary works yielded information on students identification of differences and response to a narrative in a different storytelling format. Data from the survey of book and television program preferences suggest consistency in preferences across media boundries. The data also suggest the use of adaptations motivated students to read books in genres that they would not normally read. The data from the letters suggest adaptations helped students respond to the story with a high percentage of interpretive, critical and evaluation responses. Students responses to producers included criticism of the adaptation. Data from the comparison survey found that third grade students were able to identify at least three-fourths of the changes from book to television but indicated only a neutral reaction to the changes. Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students identified both major and minor changes from the book to the television adaptation and were free with praise and criticism about the changes. Changes were considered positive if they shed more light on the character and helped to provide insight into the story. Students from the fourth through sixth grade showed an understanding of the television production process and were able to relate how the process may have influenced the adaptation. The literature review is interdisciplinary, drawing from reader response theory, literature, film studies, children's television, education and television public policy.

Book Television and Serial Adaptation

Download or read book Television and Serial Adaptation written by Shannon Wells-Lassagne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As American television continues to garner considerable esteem, rivalling the seventh art in its "cinematic" aesthetics and the complexity of its narratives, one aspect of its development has been relatively unexamined. While film has long acknowledged its tendency to adapt, an ability that contributed to its status as narrative art (capable of translating canonical texts onto the screen), television adaptations have seemingly been relegated to the miniseries or classic serial. From remakes and reboots to transmedia storytelling, loose adaptations or adaptations which last but a single episode, the recycling of pre-existing narrative is a practice that is just as common in television as in film, and this text seeks to rectify that oversight, examining series from M*A*S*H to Game of Thrones, Pride and Prejudice to Castle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular textbook introduces prospective and practicing English teachers to current methods of teaching literature in middle and high school classrooms. It underscores the value of providing students with a range of different critical approaches and tools for interpreting texts and the need to organize literature instruction around topics and issues of interest to them. Throughout the textbook, readers are encouraged to raise and explore inquiry-based questions in response to authentic dilemmas and issues they face in the critical literature classroom. New in this edition, the text shows how these approaches to fostering responses to literature also work as rich tools to address the Common Core English Language Arts Standards. Each chapter is organized around specific questions that English educators often hear in working with pre-service teachers. Suggested pedagogical methods are modelled by inviting readers to interact with the book through critical-inquiry methods for responding to texts. Readers are engaged in considering authentic dilemmas and issues facing literature teachers through inquiry-based responses to authentic case narratives. A Companion Website [http://teachingliterature.pbworks.com] provides resources and enrichment activities, inviting teachers to consider important issues in the context of their current or future classrooms.

Book The Palgrave Handbook of Children s Film and Television

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Children s Film and Television written by Casie Hermansson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores film and television for children and youth. While children’s film and television vary in form and content from country to country, their youth audience, ranging from infants to “screenagers”, is the defining feature of the genre and is written into the DNA of the medium itself. This collection offers a contemporary analysis of film and television designed for this important audience, with particular attention to new directions evident in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. With examples drawn from Iran, China, Korea, India, Israel, Eastern Europe, the Philippines, and France, as well as from the United States and the United Kingdom, contributors address a variety of issues ranging from content to production, distribution, marketing, and the use of film, both as object and medium, in education. Through a diverse consideration of media for young infants up to young adults, this volume reveals the newest trends in children’s film and television and its role as both a source of entertainment and pedagogy.

Book Textual Transformations in Children s Literature

Download or read book Textual Transformations in Children s Literature written by Benjamin Lefebvre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers new critical approaches for the study of adaptations, abridgments, translations, parodies, and mash-ups that occur internationally in contemporary children’s culture. It follows recent shifts in adaptation studies that call for a move beyond fidelity criticism, a paradigm that measures the success of an adaptation by the level of fidelity to the "original" text, toward a methodology that considers the adaptation to be always already in conversation with the adapted text. This book visits children’s literature and culture in order to consider the generic, pedagogical, and ideological underpinnings that drive both the process and the product. Focusing on novels as well as folktales, films, graphic novels, and anime, the authors consider the challenges inherent in transforming the work of authors such as William Shakespeare, Charles Perrault, L.M. Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and A.A. Milne into new forms that are palatable for later audiences particularly when—for perceived ideological or political reasons—the textual transformation is not only unavoidable but entirely necessary. Contributors consider the challenges inherent in transforming stories and characters from one type of text to another, across genres, languages, and time, offering a range of new models that will inform future scholarship.
