Book Stick and Pea Plays

Download or read book Stick and Pea Plays written by Charles Stuart Pratt and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stick-and-Pea Plays: Pastimes for the Children's Year What sort of play is the best sort of house-play for the child? If I could ask the mothers and fathers and teachers who think about such things, I should expect a reply somewhat like this: The best sort of house-play for the child is a play the child takes to naturally; a play the child can play largely by itself; a play that calls out the child's activities, trains the hand, educates the eye, exercises the judgment, stirs the imagination - and gives pleasure all the while; a play that yields something to take, to hold, to keep, to use; a play that leads readily to talks, and stories, and songs, with a beautiful lesson at the heart of them. Perhaps the first play-instinct of the child, when the little brain begins to think and the little hands to do, is in the making of mimic objects and the make-believe use of them. But the child is not merely imitative. The child is a Robinson Crusoe and a "Swiss Family Robinson" all in one. The child adapts the thing at hand to the need of the moment, to any end desired. Download or read book Plays for Children written by Alice I. Hazeltine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays for Children: An Annotated Index The principal feature of the index is the list of plays by title, with references to other versions of the same stories. NO attempt has been made to refer from the titles of all the fables and fairy tales nor to indicate the source of all the stories, but under the titles of books may be found references to scenes from them which have been dramatized. In general, narrative form and poetry are not included when material alone is preserved, as, for example, in volumes intended for oral as well as for dramatic reading. The list includes, however, narratives where suggestions or helps for dramatization are given, as well as dialogues intended not for action, but for reading. Selections from Shakespeare, and plays in foreign languages have been omitted. The annotation is intended to give a clue to the identification of the story more necessary, perhaps, with the simpler tales in the dramatic readers, since the play titles are frequently unlike those of the fairy tales and fables from which they are adapted. Additional help in finding certain stories may be found in Mary Huse Eastman's Index to fairy tales, myths and legends, which indicates variants of the same story. Often a quotation from the text suggests the character of the play. The number of characters is indicated, but it should be remembered that parts may often be doubled, and the number of boys and girls may vary accordingly. It has not seemed practicable to indicate the age of the children to whom each play is suited. The title of the book, the title of the play, the character of the annotation, the story iself, and sometimes the quotation given, often suggest this. Sometimes adults are needed. Some of the plays are best suited to older children. But as this is not a list for High School use, the Drama League List of plays for High School and College production should be consulted. Where the time required for production is given it has been found in the play itself, in the Drama League List of plays for children or in Miss Mackay's How to produce children's plays. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children's Classics in Dramatic Form, Vol. 4 Children are dramatic by nature. They are for the time the kings, the fairies, and the heroes that they picture in their imaginations. They are these characters with such abandon and with such intense pleasure that the ou-looker must believe that nature intended that they should give play to this dramatic instinct, not so much formally, with all the trappings of the man-made stage, but spontaneously and natu rally, as they talk and read. If this expressive in stinct can be utilized in the teaching of reading, we shall be able both to add greatly to the child's enjoy ment and to improve the quality of his oral reading.
