Book Parents Perceptions of School Psychologists Roles

Download or read book Parents Perceptions of School Psychologists Roles written by Laurie A. Gerken and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Parental involvement and positive relationships between parents and schools are critical to children's educational success. Communication between school and home is necessary for these relationships to thrive. The school psychologist is in the ideal position to foster and maintain the open lines of communication needed for all to be partners in education. However, psychologists fill various roles and the perceptions of parents regarding the roles and functions of the school psychologist have been neglected in the research. This study was conducted to survey the perceptions and opinions of parents being served by school psychologists in the Pacific Northwest. A total of 325 parent surveys were sent to nine school districts; five surveys for each school. These surveys were to be given to parents of students in Special Education services. Twenty-one completed and usable surveys were returned. Ten of the respondents viewed their school psychologist as fulfilling a variety of functions. Most respondents voiced being generally satisfied with the services currently being offered. Seven of the parents recommended increasing individual counseling, social skills training, and parent training. Report writing was the only function suggested to be decreased. Those parents most satisfied with their psychologists had the most contacts with him/her during the school year and saw him/her as a people-oriented, caring person. The consensus from this study was that parents want a higher quantity of, and more family-focused, psychological services"--Document.

Book The Portrayal of African American Children in the School Psychology Literature Examining the Perceptions of Professionals

Download or read book The Portrayal of African American Children in the School Psychology Literature Examining the Perceptions of Professionals written by Clarissa Nicole Henry and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately seven times more African American children in schools than there are African American school psychologists. (Curtis, Grier, & Hunley, 2004; United States [US] Census, 2005). To ensure the needs of African American children are met, culturally competent techniques need to be used in research and practice. In the first phase of the current study, the use of culturally informed techniques and the overall portrayal of African American children in school psychology research were investigated. A content analysis of the school psychology research literature focusing on African American children was performed to examine methodological and conceptual limitations. Descriptive analyses showed that some of the methodological and conceptual limitations found in other fields of psychology were also found in school psychology literature. In the second phase of this study, a measure of perceptions was developed based on pre-existing literature and disseminated to school psychology practitioners as a preliminary investigation of the potential impact of African American research on their perceptions (n = 200). Exploratory factor analysis of the PAAC (Perceptions of African American Children questionnaire) yielded a one factor structure and the measure was found to be reliable. ANOVAs investigating how participant characteristics related to the extracted factor of the measure showed that the racial/ethnic child population, with whom school psychologists worked, had an impact on psychologist's responding to PAAC questions. The implications of this research are twofold: to inform research conceptualization and methodology, and to increase cultural sensitivity among authors and consumers of school psychology research.

Book Student Teachers Perceptions and Knowledge of School Psychology

Download or read book Student Teachers Perceptions and Knowledge of School Psychology written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following the passage of Public Law 94-142, school psychologists' main role was to facilitate the placement of children into different educational programs (Fagan & Wise, 2000). The role of the school psychologist has shifted since that time, and today school psychology training programs produce practitioners who are equipped to handle much more. A continuation in the departure from the assessment and eligibility determination role of the school psychologist allows for a more proactive approach to problematic childhood and adolescent behaviors. A barrier that stands in the way of this role transformation are teachers' perceptions, knowledge, and reactions toward school psychologists. Teachers' perceptions and knowledge are particularly influential in determining the diversity, variability, and usefulness of school psychological services, as they are the main source of referrals (Merrell, Ervin, & Peacock, 2011). Therefore, it is important to understand teachers' perceptions of the role of the school psychologist because their perceptions influence how school psychologists are utilized to address student needs. Previous research in this area was conducted prior to the passage of Public Law 94-142 and does not reflect the changes mentioned above. The purpose of this study was to add updated research to this area and to understand the connection between teachers' perceptions and the role of the school psychologist. Forty preservice teachers from three teacher training programs completed a survey with different scenarios and were their perceptions about school psychologist would be equipped to handle the situation. Results indicated that the preservice teachers recognized the assessment role of the school psychologist but had less recognition of other roles. This finding suggests that teacher orientation presentations should communicate the breadth and depth of the role of the school psychologist so that they may be used to their full capabilities.

Book Perceptions of School Psychologists Regarding Behavioral Interventions for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Co occurring Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

Download or read book Perceptions of School Psychologists Regarding Behavioral Interventions for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Co occurring Emotional and Behavioral Disorders written by Nicole Gilmour and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study surveyed school psychologists' experience and confidence working with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), as well as the amount and type of training received and importance of receiving additional training. Members randomly selected from the National Association of School Psychology (NASP) membership completed a survey. Significance tests conducted determined differences existed between doctoral and non-doctoral school psychologists across several demographic, caseload, training, and confidence variables. Doctoral level school psychologists were older, had a greater number of years in the field, assessed a greater number of students with ASD and EBDs, and had higher levels of confidence in [their] ability to assess, counsel, develop behavioral intervention plans, and consult with those who work directly with students with ASD and EBDs. Additional data described self-reported training experiences in ASD and perceptions of training. Regression analyses performed identified predictors of confidence in working with students with ASD and EBDs. Perceptions of training emerged as the only significant predictor of confidence to deliver various services to students with ASD. In addition, descriptive data indicated that a fairly small percentage of school psychologists believed that they were well trained to work with students with ASD, a relatively large percentage desired more training, and many believed that this training was important."--Abstract.

Book Dream Work with Children

Download or read book Dream Work with Children written by Rosalia Huermann and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty nine public school mental health practitioners (i.e., school counselors, school psychologists, and school social workers) completed a survey about working with dreams when counseling students. Most practitioners in this sample reported having at least one student bring up dreams during counseling and spent some time in counseling working with students' dreams. Practitioners addressed dreams more frequently in situations where the student was having troubling dreams or nightmares, and/or was dealing with death and grief. They also acknowledged working with dreams with students who were diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, were emotionally disturbed, suffered from recurrent dreams, were depressed, and had learning disabilities. This study shows that practitioners were less likely to talk about dreams with students who had adjustment disorders, psychosis, were oppositional or ill, struggled with substance abuse problems, or had eating disorders. Furthermore, most practitioners indicated receiving no training and did not feel competent to work with children's dreams. However, most surveyed practitioners were interested in learning more about dreams in general.
