Book From Neurons to Neighborhoods

Download or read book From Neurons to Neighborhoods written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-13 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Book Literacy Development in the Early Years Helping Children Read and Write

Download or read book Literacy Development in the Early Years Helping Children Read and Write written by Lesley Mandel Morrow and published by Pearson Higher Ed. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated language arts approach to literacy development that brings early childhood perspectives on how children learn in pre-kindergarten though grade three, together with explicit teaching of literacy skills and strategies teachers need to make it all work. Pre-service and in-service teachers get a wealth of valuable information for making children active participants in the process of literacy development with this integrated approach to language arts. The book encourages teaching reading, writing, listening, thinking, and viewing at the same time, using each skill to develop the others, and discusses both constructivist problem-solving teaching and more explicit systematic instruction. Through both theoretical and research-based rationales, plus extensive practical applications, renowned author Lesley Mandel Morrow presents literacy development as an active process between children and adults to create meaning and real purpose–and helps pre- and in-service teachers grasp the scope and complexity of early literacy development. This comprehensive, balanced approach to literacy teaching and learning covers oral language development, word study, phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension, listening and writing. The reader is provided with a complete picture of early literacy development.

Book Verbal Processes in Children

Download or read book Verbal Processes in Children written by Charles J. Brainerd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time now, the study of cognitive development has been far and away the most active discipline within developmental psychology. Although there would be much disagreement as to the exact proportion of papers published in developmen tal journals that could be considered cognitive, 50% seems like a conservative estimate. Hence, a series of scholarly books to be devoted to work in cognitive development is especially appropriate at this time. The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series will be a serial publication of the "advances" type, carrying the subtitle Progress in Cognitive Development Research. Each volume in the Progress sequence will be strongly thematic, in that it will be limited to some well-defined domain of cognitive-developmental research (e. g. , logical and mathematical de velopment, semantic development). All Progress volumes will be edited collec tions. Editors of such collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to have their books published either as contributions to the Progress sequence or as separate volumes. All books written by one author or a small group of authors will be published as separate volumes within the series. A fairly broad definition of cognitive development is being used in the selection of books for this series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let me start with a brief quote from the English poet and philosopher Coleridge on the importance of language: "Language is the arsenal of the human mind: it contains the trophies of its past and the weapons of its future conquests. Leaving aside the image of war, these words resonate in the minds of all educators. Teachers in the early stages of education, in particular, need not be convinced of the consequences of a language-poor childhood for children. For this reason, language and speaking experts are in high demand, especially in integration schools with students with disabilities. And also for this reason, teachers who meet foreign students are particularly valued so that they acquire bilingualism. We know how much educators try to use constructive strategies to develop language in their students. Of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, it is usually precisely the first two (listening and speaking) that are forgotten after the first years of school1. And those who suffer from this neglect are always those boys and girls who live in an environment with impoverished language or with fewer possibilities for development. In England we have always been concerned about this neglect, which is why we have research and initiatives such as Bullock's 'Language for Life' in the 1970s, or the 'Oratory' project from 1987 to 1993, which has had a great impact on his work. . moment. The efforts that followed were however short-lived, none of the measures taken seem to last in time. But finally, here we have a practical and accessible book that can change all that. Based on meticulous research and rigorous testing, Jacob Carter and his team, under the auspices of the English-speaking Union, have put together a set of materials and suggestions that have already worked successfully in hundreds of schools. The material is easy to use and provides a very useful guide that educators can use to develop a structured program, with imaginative and creative activities, putting into practice group and pair work. It is therefore a source of support and encouragement for the teacher. In addition, this book offers an excellent opportunity to improve the school, offering teachers the opportunity to integrate dialogue, observation, organization and joint evaluation with other teachers in their daily lives, by learning from each other. In each team meeting, there may be a question where teachers take turns choosing an example and starting a dialogue about the development of children's oral skills to together assess different learning strategies. behavior, questions, listening, persuasion, but also the extent of vocabulary use. Jacob Carter has developed an approach and a set of materials and suggestions that will increase the likelihood that teachers will free their minds and open their hearts to the students they teach. Read and enjoy.
