Book excerpt: Emotional and behavioral problems in childhood can generally be accounted for by two overarching factors: externalizing problems, including aggression and hyperactivity, and internalizing problems, including anxiety and social withdrawal. Comorbidity between internalizing and externalizing problems is surprisingly common and is associated with particularly severe and chronic maladjustment, yet little is known about when and why internalizing-externalizing comorbidity emerges. This dissertation consists of two studies investigating the development of internalizing, externalizing, and comorbid problems in young school-aged children. Both studies drew on a sample of 336 children from an urban school district who were over-sampled for aggressive/oppositional behavior problems and followed longitudinally from kindergarten to 2nd grade. In Study 1, an exploratory latent transition analysis was conducted to explore the developmental dynamics of aggression/oppositionality, hyperactivity/inattention, anxiety, and social withdrawal in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Four latent profiles were identified: comorbid (48% of the sample in each year), internalizing (19-23%), externalizing (21-22%), and well-adjusted (7-11%). High continuity was observed in symptom profiles across years, particularly for the comorbid profile. Additionally, internalizing children had a 20% probability of remitting by the following year, whereas externalizing children had a 25% probability of transitioning to the comorbid profile. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that a common vulnerability factor contributes to developmentally stable internalizing-externalizing comorbidity, while also suggesting that some children with externalizing symptoms are at risk for subsequently accumulating internalizing symptoms.Study 2 explored associations between 1st-grade childrens joint internalizing-externalizing symptoms and neural indices of social threat processing biases, measured as event-related potential amplitude differences to threatening versus neutral facial expressions. The results suggested that high-externalizing/low-internalizing children exhibit deficient automatic attentional capture by fearful faces and blunted biases toward sustained perceptual processing of threatening versus neutral faces. In contrast, high-internalizing/low-externalizing children exhibited greater automatic attentional capture by fearful faces. Finally, children with comorbid internalizing-externalizing symptoms exhibited more normative patterns of social threat processing. This suggests that social threat processing biases act as differential risk factors for externalizing versus internalizing problems, and they do not explain internalizing-externalizing comorbidity.

Book excerpt: One of the most prevalent ways to assess child and adolescent symptomatology is with a multiple-informant approach (Kraemer et al., 2003; De Los Reyes et al., 2015), yet mental health professionals commonly run into the problem of informant discrepancies in ratings of symptomatology (Achenbach, 2006). These comparisons are made on the observed scores; however, we argue that to simply compare mean scores may not be accurate and instead, researchers must examine the role of measurement invariance. We hypothesized that information discrepancies between parent and self-report on the YOQ is due to lack of measurement invariance. Our assessment of measurement invariance was based on differences in the factor structure and differential item functioning of the YOQ between parents and children at two time points (N Parents T1 = 70; N Parents T2 = 63; N Children T1 = 79; N Children T2 = 74) using Internalizing and Externalizing factor structures. The results from our study show that children and parents perceive symptoms differently, especially behavioral indicators of internalizing disorders. We conclude that direct comparisons of parent and child observed scores on the YOQ require the treating clinician to understand and acknowledge these discrepancies when developing an assessment-based case conceptualization and collaborative treatment plan. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Although neighborhood factors strongly influence children’s internalizing and externalizing symptoms, few studies have focused on understanding the influences of various neighborhood environment on such symptoms. To fill this research gap, this study systematically captures the influences of different types of neighborhood factors on behavioral problems in different developmental stages. Three research topics were examined in this dissertation: (1) the influences of two types of neighborhood factors (neighborhood structural and process factors) on internalizing and externalizing symptoms in early childhood; (2) the gender differences of the influences of neighborhood factors on adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptoms; and (3) how the two types of neighborhood factors affect the longitudinal development of internalizing and externalizing symptoms from early childhood to adolescent. Using the six-wave longitudinal dataset from Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, Structural Equation Model was conducted to answer the first two research questions and Latent Growth Curve Model was used to answer the third research question. Findings of this study extended the existing knowledge on child behavioral symptoms and help inform both macro- and micro-level interventions.

Book excerpt: Using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (Kindergarten Class), this research explored the developmental trajectories of internalizing and externalizing behaviors during the elementary school years, with an emphasis on the connections between these behaviors, how they are embedded in social structural settings defined by broad stratification systems, and what their implications are for the future. Specifically, this study was organized around three aims: (1) To estimate trajectories of internalizing and externalizing behaviors (e.g., co-occurrence and dynamic interplay); (2) To explore variations in those trajectories across segments of the population (e.g., race/ethnicity); and (3) To examine the links between children's internalizing and externalizing pathways in elementary school and their 8th grade academic functioning, as well as possible group variation in those links. Four analytical techniques -- growth curve analysis, latent class growth analysis, cross-lagged modeling and regression analysis -- were used. Results indicated a low incidence of internalizing and externalizing symptoms in the whole sample as well as small incremental changes over time and small differences across groups. More in-depth investigation revealed that children of Black parents and boys were at greater risk for present and future problematic behaviors, and boys and children of immigrants were at greater risk for future academic failure when their earlier overall combined symptom trajectories fell in the risky category. In addition, the general patterns of children's internalizing symptoms serving as protective factors for future externalizing symptoms and of externalizing symptoms serving as risk factors for future internalizing symptoms tended to be most consistent among children of White parents and children of non-immigrants. Moreover, findings revealed that what matters about the symptom trajectories in relation to later school functioning is not just the initial level of symptoms but also the change in levels from kindergarten through fifth grade. Overall, this study suggested that intervention efforts need to take into account both the symptomatic child's initial (and overall) levels of symptoms as well as over-time change of symptoms when putting together a specific intervention plan for the affected individual. Finer prevention and intervention efforts are also needed for boys and for children of immigrants to facilitate positive academic functioning.
