Book excerpt: NPR's Favorite Books of 2019 Rachel Cusk redrew the boundaries of fiction with the Outline Trilogy, three “literary masterpieces” (The Washington Post) whose narrator, Faye, perceives the world with a glinting, unsparing intelligence while remaining opaque to the reader. Lauded for the precision of her prose and the quality of her insight, Cusk is a writer of uncommon brilliance. Now, in Coventry, she gathers a selection of her nonfiction writings that both offers new insights on the themes at the heart of her fiction and forges a startling critical voice on some of our most urgent personal, social, and artistic questions. Coventry encompasses memoir, cultural criticism, and writing about literature, with pieces on family life, gender, and politics, and on D. H. Lawrence, Françoise Sagan, and Kazuo Ishiguro. Named for an essay Cusk published in Granta (“Every so often, for offences actual or hypothetical, my mother and father stop speaking to me. There’s a funny phrase for this phenomenon in England: it’s called being sent to Coventry”), this collection is pure Cusk and essential reading for our age: fearless, unrepentantly erudite, and dazzling to behold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Little History Of Coventry packs into its pages the colour and incident of a thousand years, telling the story of a city that has perhaps been overlooked by mainstream historians, but has often been at the heart of this country's great events. From the testing ground of the saintly Godiva to fourteenth-century boom town, from Second World War Blitz victim to the next UK City of Culture, Coventry has always been an inventive place with an unerring ability to bounce back from misfortune and make its mark. This is a truly eye-opening journey through the events and characters that have shaped its story and made the city one of England's hidden jewels.

Book The Eagle and the Phoenix Coventry Stories for Young People

Download or read book The Eagle and the Phoenix Coventry Stories for Young People written by Sheila Woolf and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coventry's coat of arms shows an eagle and a phoenix on either side of the famous "elephant and castle" - why? The eagle was the emblem of Lady Godiva's husband, Leofric, Earl of Mercia. The earl and his countess are forever remembered in Coventry's distant past. The phoenix, a mythical bird which is born again from fire, has become the symbol of the new Coventry, rising from the ashes after so much of the city was destroyed by war. In The Eagle and the Phoenix you can witness some of the dramatic moments in the history of Coventry, through nine stories told by children who saw them: Marcus the young Roman, training horses at the Lunt Fort; Thomas and Anne, plotting with the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots; Daniel and William, viewing a terrible hanging at Gibbet Hill; Tilly the weaver and Amit the Sky Blues fan. Take a journey into Coventry's past - and imagine yourself there.

In the following June, Samuel Cobb's wifer (Silence Barney, b. Feb. 21, 1756, ) and his younger children, who had remained in Westmoreland while preparations were making for their reception, joined their husband and father in the wilderness, and the first settlement of Coventry was made complete. Tisdale Cobb's family consisted only of himself and wife (Sarah Pierce;) and Samuel's of himself, his wife, three sons, and four daughters. These fathers of the town were noteworthy men, and it will be amiss not to give some detailed account of them. Samuel Cobb was a native of Taunton, Mass., born Sept. 3d, 1753. He learned the blacksmith's trade, in which he became an ingenious and skilful workman. In early life he removed to Westmoreland, N. H., where he was one of the pioneer settlers. On the breaking out of the revolutionary war, he enlisted in the army of independence, and rendered efficient service as a soldier and a gunsmith. While in the army he acquired much distinction for his prodigious strength and his great skill in wrestling, an exercise in which our athletic ancestors very freely indulged. Tradition says that on one occasion when a wrestling match was held to determine the championship of that division of the army to which he belonged, he was victorious over all competitors. He was connected with Stark's army at the battle of Bennington, but did not engage in the fight, being occupied in repairing the disabled guns of the other soldiers. At one time, he and his brother Simeon were enrolled as minute men, and Simeon having ben summoned to the field, had prepared his knapsack and gun and was about to start, when Samuel thought he discovered some hesitation in his brother, and asked him if he would rather stay at home, to..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Coventry In preparing this volume for the press I have omitted some of the matter in Life in an Old English Town, which did not seem suitable for this series, and added fresh material likely to be useful to those who wished to identify the historic sites, and see the historic buildings of Coventry. In expanding Chapter XV. in so far as it dealt with the Corpus Christi plays - a task the labours of Dr Hardin Craig have rendered comparatively light - I have been able to add one hitherto unpublished item to the subject of the mediaeval dramatic history of Coventry (p. 296), and dispel the idea that the name "S. Crytyan" given to a play acted in 1505 is a misreading for S. Catherine. For permission to publish this item I am indebted to the kindness of Mr William Page, F.S.A., editor of the Victoria County History, Another point remotely bearing upon the pageants is the chronology of royal visits to Coventry (p. 288), which I have endeavoured to clear up as far as I could, Sharps Dissertation on the Coventry Mysteries, the usual guide in these matters, being extremely faulty in this respect on account of the confusion which prevails in the Ms. annals or mayor-lists, on which he depended for dates.
