Book The Islanders of the Pacific

Download or read book The Islanders of the Pacific written by T. R. Johnston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Islanders of the Pacific: Or the Children of the Sun I have tried to work out answers to the natives' problems from the natives' point of view to put myself for a moment in their place, to think with their mind, and I feel that my long years of residence among them, in some degree, enables me to do this. To have to attack a native problem, shackled by the convention of our own way of thinking, is a great handicap, of which I have tried whenever possible to divest myself. I may not always have succeeded - many of my answers are no doubt wrong - but we are none of us infallible, and least of all do I consider myself so, for ethnology to me is only a hobby. But if my scientific methods do not always follow in the beaten path, my interest in the natives is a very real one, perhaps because they appeal to the child that is present in all of us. They are the Peter Pans of humanity, and if in governing them we remember this great will be our ultimate reward. The very mystery of life itself was in the chill, sweet air, and the two hushed their voices so that they sounded scarcely louder than the rustle of the fallen leaves under their feet and the drowsy stirring of the unseen, living things about them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Incas: The Children of the Sun Equally suggestive are the Andean terraces, and the rich coast valleys, all irrigated with paternal care, and with palaces and castles embosomed in groves of fruit trees. Still more attractive to the poetic mind are the detailed descriptions of the imperial festivals at Cuzco, the gorgeous ceremonial wor ship, and the probationary exercises of the youthful Inca aspirants. The whole is pervaded by the religious thoughts engendered by that elemental cult which was subservient to the worship of a supreme disposer of the universe. The im agination naturally turns from all these glories to the cradle of the Inca race, to the mysterious monolith of Tiahuanacu, and the traditions which centre round the lake of Titicaca. Book Children of Other Lands Classic Reprint

Download or read book Children of Other Lands Classic Reprint written by Watty Piper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Other Lands When you have been playing in the hot sun, nothing tastes quite so good as a. Drink of cold water. Ahmed and Hada live in a country far, far hotter than ours. Yet when they are thirsty they can have only a sip of luke-warm water from a goat-skin. To reach the 'near est well, they must travel miles and miles over the burning sands. This hot dry land where they live is called Arabia. The sea touches it for four thousand miles, but fresh water is very, very scarce. Arabia has almost no rivers except some which run underground. In some parts of Arabia rain seldom falls, and even the ocean breezes that blow across this big neck of land in western Asia are warm and dry. You wonder why anyone chooses to live in such a place, but about five million people do live there. Some of the people live in villages in houses of sun-dried brick, but many have no home but a tent. Ahmed and Hada live in a tent made of goat-skin. It is broad and low and has two rooms, one for Hada and her mother, and the other for Ahmed and his father. Sometimes Ahmed's beautiful horse, Selim, wanders into the tent too, and makes himself quite at home. Ahmed's father Hassan, owns many horses. They are smaller than our horses, but beautifully formed. They can travel a long time with out needing a drink. The Arabs are very fond of their horses and treat them like members of the family. Ahmed does not always ride on his horse. Sometimes he rides on a camel. Although Father Hassan has no house, he is a rich man. He owns many camels besides his horses and flocks of sheep and goats. He is a chief, too, which means that he rules over his tribe. But how can Father Hassan's animals get enough to eat in so dry and sandy a country? This is the reason. Arabia is not all desert. There are green spots here and there where the cattle can graze. When they have eaten the grass in these places, the family must move on. During these ten years the author has had the opportunity to deliver her lectures on this theme before many schools and in connection with the evening lec ture course conducted by the New York City Department of Education. Out of the interest displayed in these lectures has grown this volume, intended for children of the higher grammar grades. Of many valuable and instructive hints and suggestions received from friends and auditors the author has availed herself, and very greatly at their request has incorpo rated these lectures into book form, adding thereto an account of her actual experiences on the three occasions when she was fortunately able to observe the total eclipse of the sun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children of the Abbey: A Tale When insulted by malice, or oppressed by cruelty, the heart can assume a stern fortitude foreign to its nature; but this seeming, apathy vanishes at the voice of kindness, as the rigid frost of winter melts before the gentle influence of the sun; and tears, gushing tears of gratitude and sensibility express its yielding feelings. Sacred are such tears; they flow from the sweet source of social affection; the good alone can shed them.
