Book Children of the Seventh Fire

Download or read book Children of the Seventh Fire written by Lisa A. Hart and published by McDonald and Woodward Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written primarily for young readers aged 9 to 11 years, but is also of value to their teachers, friends, and families. This story follows a group of elementary school students as they travel to a nearby Indian reservation to join with Indian children and hear an Anishinabe elder a tell of the Seven Fires Prophecy -- a teaching of ancient wisdom that forsaw, long ago, what might become of the Anishinabe people. The prophets had foretold that the Anishinabe people would need to move from their Atlantic coast homeland westward throughout and beyond the Great Lakes, to recognize the existence of good and bad among all people and learn how to deal with these different traits, to anticipate struggles among and between people of different cultures, to gather and protect their native wisdom in the face of efforts to destroy or erase it, and -- according to the prophecy of the Seventh Fire -- to be prepared to recall and share that wisdom when the time was right. The elder concluded his presentation by suggesting that now might be the time for all of Earth's people to consider adopting more balanced, holistic world views, such as those of the Anishinabe people, in order to deal with the many social and environmental problems facing the modern world. "Indigenous people all over the world still possess the wisdom of how to think with their minds and hearts. If we bring this way of decision-making into our lives, it will help us create the positive change we need to make. We are living in the time of the Seventh Fire. It's up to all of us to determine if the Seventh Fire will light the Eighth and final Fire of peace and healing. If we make the right choices, we will be successful! Are we the new people of the Seventh Fire? Could you be the Children of the Seventh Fire?" After finishing the story, the elder asked questions of the students; they responded, discussions ensued, ideas were formed. Then they returned to their communities and, in many different ways, acted upon what they had learned from Kinoo's teaching of the Seven Fires Prophecy! Could you, your family, your friends, and your neighbors also be Children of the Seventh Fire? Indigenous wisdom draws upon the complex, holistic perspectives of traditional lifeways to help inform children and adults with a more comprehensive and balanced understanding of the modern world and its challenges. Such balanced insight helps individuals to make better informed decisions in all areas of their lives.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Glass Key Award given by the members of the Crime Writers of Scandinavia All the best homes are by the water, or so the matron of Kongslund Orphanage tells her small charges. But at this particular house by the sea, not all is as it appears. On September 11, 2001, on a desolate beach on the outskirts of Copenhagen, police begin investigating the strange death of an unidentified woman. Surrounding the body are what appear to be offerings to the deceased: a book, a small noose, a dead golden canary, a linden tree branch, and a photo of the Kongslund Orphanage. As the police puzzle over their bizarre findings, the Twin Towers fall in walls of flame and the case is quickly overshadowed by the terror half a world away. Years later, as the sixtieth anniversary of the matron's reign at Kongslund approaches, identical anonymous letters are sent to six of the home's former residents, hinting at a cover-up that has allowed Denmark's most influential to hide away their dirty secrets and keep their grip on power. As one tenacious reporter hunts for clues, he begins to unravel the true parentage of some of Kongslund's "orphans." Can he figure out who is sending the mysterious letters and who murdered the woman on the beach years earlier before it is too late?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Too many survivors of Canada’s Indian residential schools live to forget. Theodore Fontaine writes to remember.” – Hana Gartner, CBC’s The Fifth Estate Bestselling Memoir, McNally Robinson Booksellers Approved curriculum resource for grade 9–12 students in British Columbia and Manitoba. Theodore Niizhotay Fontaine lost his family and freedom just after his seventh birthday, when his parents were forced to leave him at an Indian residential school by order of the Roman Catholic Church and the Government of Canada. Twelve years later, he left school frozen at the emotional age of seven. He was confused, angry and conflicted, on a path of self-destruction. At age 29, he emerged from this blackness. By age 32, he had graduated from the Civil Engineering Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and begun a journey of self-exploration and healing. In this powerful and poignant memoir, Ted examines the impact of his psychological, emotional and sexual abuse, the loss of his language and culture, and, most important, the loss of his family and community. He goes beyond details of the abuses of Indigenous children to relate a unique understanding of why most residential school survivors have post-traumatic stress disorders and why succeeding generations of First Nations children suffer from this dark chapter in history. Told as remembrances described with insights that have evolved through his healing, his story resonates with his resolve to help himself and other residential school survivors and to share his enduring belief that one can pick up the shattered pieces and use them for good.

Book excerpt: Canada is more diverse than ever before, and the application of transcultural literacies in Canadian classrooms is needed for the successful growth of students and teachers alike. In this edited volume, world-renowned educators offer unique perspectives on the impact of race, culture, and identity in the classroom. With an interdisciplinary approach, this book investigates not only how teachers can design learning spaces to accommodate diverse students, but also how they can build literacy programs to complement and further develop the varied strengths, skills, and experiences of those students. Educators will learn to better understand the trajectories of immigration: how immigrant students often enter the classroom after living in multiple places, acquiring several languages, and forming memories of places that are different from Canadian socio-cultural and geographic landscapes. Examining the roles of both teachers and students in transcultural language learning, this text will benefit students in teacher education programs and in graduate-level education studies that focus on language and literacy, diversity, and global citizenship.
