His fascination with British writers hearkening from the Lake District like Beatrix Potter, William Wordsworth, John Keats and many others, led him to the fells of North West England. Here, between the River Lune and River Eden, in the small remote village of Ravenstonedale, Daniel set up a studio and began teaching art at the local one-room school house. After gaining the trust of the faculty and students, he embarked on documenting the daily routine of the young students with a special focus on the recess period. Children of Cumbria is the resulting 150-page book of insightful black and white photographs culled from thousands of images. It reveals the interpersonal dynamics, character and habits of children not yet encumbered by technology and city-life. A "portrait of playtime" is combined with intimate moments of solitude expressing a deep connection between children and nature.

Pediatricians uncovered evidence of abuse in 121 children, but official investigations led to the majority of the charges being dismissed, with children returned to their families and the public reassured that there was no widespread abuse problem. In this revelatory book, Beatrix Campbell proves that the government inquiry that followed the scandal was a cover-up. Within days of its opening, experts had confirmed that 75% of the diagnoses had been correct, but ministers never revealed those findings to Parliament or the public. Instead, they discredited the doctors and social workers involved in a dangerous attempt to minimize scrutiny and criticism. The legacy of the Cleveland scandal lives today, even as the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse is underway. It began an era of skepticism and blame in child protection policy that put children's safety at risk, then and now.

It is not reasonable, however, that it should be so difficult to access an exam centre nor that families should pay exam costs on top of everything else. Home educators and local authorities (LAs) have, since the Badman Review and its aftermath in 2009, made "real efforts to engage" and to "ensure more constructive relationships and better support", but there is clearly some way to go. In particular, the Committee notes the 'postcode lottery' element of current provision for home educators, with different LAs offering starkly different services and patterns of support. It calls on the Department for Education to conduct an audit, review the home education guidance given to LAs and to support pilots for 'local offers of support' being published. The Committee is also concerned that provisions for home-educated young people with SEN are not being fully met.
