Book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Anxiety and ADHD Symptoms

Download or read book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Anxiety and ADHD Symptoms written by Katherine C. Gentile and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) generally relies on reports from both parents and teachers to ensure the symptoms are present in multiple settings. Because teachers must rely solely on behavioral observations, they must draw conclusions about the nature of attention-based symptoms, which may present similarly to other symptoms, including anxiety. Children who experience anxiety may have difficulty maintaining their attention due to preoccupation with their anxiety (Abramovitch, Dar, Mittelman, & Schweiger, 2013). As a result, teachers may interpret their difficulties with attention as indicators of ADHD, rather than as a symptom of their anxiety. The purpose of the present study is to examine the accuracy of parent and teacher reports of various constructs (anxiety, inattention, and hyperactivity) and determine whether parent or teacher ratings of these constructs are more accurate in predicting whether a child with ADHD has a comorbid anxiety disorder. An archival study of data was conducted to compare parent and teacher ratings of symptoms on the Behavioral Assessment System for Children - Second Edition (BASC-2) in children who were referred for evaluation due to difficulties with attention and/or hyperactivity. The ratings were compared for children with and without a comorbid diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. Results indicate that both parent and teacher ratings of anxiety were able to predict comorbid anxiety, with parent ratings being the strongest predictor in the overall sample. Additional analyses are included to evaluate whether age and gender were modifiers of these relationships.
