The physical abuse can range from more mild forms of aggression between siblings, such as pushing and shoving, to very violent behavior such as using weapons. Often parents don't see the abuse for what it is. As a rule, parents and society expect fights and aggression among siblings. Because of this, parents often don't see sibling abuse as a problem until serious harm occurs. Besides the direct dangers of sibling abuse, the abuse can cause all kinds of long-term problems into adulthood. As various forms of interpersonal family violence receive more attention in the literature, sibling abuse is still in the background. Despite the increasing knowledge about the prevalence, causes, and effects of sibling abuse, many of us continue to relegate it to a childhood occurrence. Sibling abuse symptoms continue to go unrecognized and its demoralizing effects continue to be ignored. Minimization and denial of sibling abuse have also contributed to constraining the extent of knowledge related to this phenomenon. The present book seeks to add to the existing research confirming the existence of sibling victimization and its long-term impacts. This book has two primary purposes: 1) to capture the beliefs, feelings, and firsthand account of the abusive sibling experiences from the perspective of victims, and 2) to investigate the potential learned responses associated with sibling abuse and their possible impact on adult relationships by exploring participants' emotional and relational histories, and belief systems. Data suggests the long-term impacts of learned responses associated with sibling abuse can be detrimental to both interpersonal relationships and mental health. Emergent themes related to family functioning and environment and resiliency after abuse are also presented.

They described the shock, helplessness, guilt, loss, sadness and the ongoing pain and distress that they experienced witnessing the effect of the abuse on their sibling. They also identified the repercussions that their sibling's abuse had for their sibling relationship, as well as the impact on their relationships with other family members. Their families played a key role in shaping and determining their experience of their sibling's abuse, according to those interviewed. Family relationships and dynamics and the response of family members to the disclosure were identified as influential. Their mother's response to the abused sibling's disclosure was identified as particularly important.

Book excerpt: In situations of child abuse or neglect, it is beneficial to know how and why siblings may be treated differently. The thesis question was investigated using transcendental phenomenology. The participants were social workers in northern British Columbia, who worked for a minimum of two years in a position assessing risk to families. In this study, siblings who were treated differently by their abusive parents were male children who were physical and emotionally abused by a step-father. Two reasons given were because of the parent's upbringing, and the child's behavioural diagnoses. Further, siblings who are treated similarly in abusive homes were neglected by their mother. Neglect occurs because of mental health diagnoses and alcohol and substance misuse by the parent. The childhood experiences of the parent, including sibling relationships, and keeping Aboriginal children connected to their communities are also themes from this research. Solution-focused therapy was suggested as one treatment to be used by clinicians working with siblings who have been abused. Social workers working with families assessing risk may examine these results when working with abusive or neglectful families where children appear to be treated similarly or differently. --P. ii.

The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, hermeneutic phenomenological study with interpretive phenomenological analysis, was to explore my participants' experiences of sibling abuse in childhood and intimate partner violence in adulthood, as well as explore connections between the types of abuse and abusers. This study is novel in examining the long-term impact of sibling abuse in the context of intimate partner violence victimization outcomes. By examining participants' descriptions of their experiences, several nuances came to light about the experience of sibling abuse, and how it impacted participants' vulnerability to violence in adulthood. The most notable finding was the lack of parental support for both types of victimization. In childhood, the parental failure to protect impacted participants in three ways. One, because the sibling abuse was tolerated by their parents, they learned that it was "OK" to be abused. Two, participants came to expect and accept abuse in future relationships based on their childhood experiences. And three, because their parents failed to protect them in childhood, they could not be counted on to help them in adulthood; therefore, participants felt "stuck" in their relationships with intimate partner violence. Current family violence theories may explain the long-term outcome of sibling abuse, but my study, and the current state of the literature around long-term outcomes, may best explain victimization outcomes when the victim of sibling abuse also experiences parental failure to protect. Additionally, because sibling abuse often occurs in homes where there are other types of violence present, more research needs to be done to identify the most significant contributors to a victimization outcome, as well as protective factors in the home that prevent revictimization.

Book excerpt: Sibling violence is a common occurrence for many children yet this form of family violence has received minimal attention in research compared to other forms of child maltreatment. With parents as an integral component in the lives of many children, parental perceptions and experiences of violence between siblings are important to understand. Furthermore, with the increased variation in family structures within society, inclusion of multiple types of families in research is necessary to encompass a broad understanding of sibling violence. This case study included seven parents from four different family structures to examine their perceptions and experiences of physical and emotional violence between siblings. Three phases of data collection including both quantitative and qualitative data gathered information about participants' experiences with siblings in childhood, witnessed behaviors between children, behaviors associated with sibling violence and sibling rivalry, and labels used to refer to violence between siblings. Participants were also presented with several case scenarios depicting various sibling interactions in which they processed the degree to which they found the behaviors violent or non-violent. Findings indicate that family structure is less important than past and present environmental and contextual factors in understanding participant differentiation between problematic and non-problematic behaviors between siblings. Data from all three phases helped in the construction of a parental decision-making model of sibling interaction that included consideration of past experiences, children factors, the context of interaction, and family rules when classifying behaviors. Implications of the findings for social work direct practice, policy aimed at addressing violence between siblings, advocacy through parental education, social work education, and future directions for research in the area of sibling violence are presented.
