Book excerpt: Combining a comprehensive literature review with original empirical research on young people′s use of new media, this book provides a fresh and in-depth discussion of the increasingly complex relationship between the media and childhood, the family and the home. We can no longer imagine our daily lives without media and communication technologies. At the start of the 21st century, the home is being transformed into the site of a multimedia culture. This book looks at the discussions around the potential benefits of this new media and asks: What impact are the new media having on childhood and adolescence? Are these technologies changing the nature of young people′s leisure and sociability? and has the participation of children in private and public life changed?

This book was released on 2001 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time, scientific knowledge on children and childhood was almost exclusively produced by educationalists and developmental psychologists. In recent years, however, a new approach originating in Europe was added: childhood sociology. This book introduces this approach by presenting a collection of essays from various European countries: France, Germany, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. The articles cover a wide range of methodologies as well as subject areas in the field of childhood sociology, giving a picture of the life situation of contemporary children in Europe and arguing how childhood researchers can come to terms with new trends and facts of (post-)modern childhood.

Book Children and Young People s Relationships

Download or read book Children and Young People s Relationships written by Samantha Punch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the current state of childhood studies by exploring children and young people’s agency and relationships. It considers how recent theorisations of relationships and relational processes can move childhood studies forward, particularly in relation to re-thinking claims of children and young people’s agency and uncritical assertions around children and young people’s participation and voice. It does this by bringing together case studies of children’s inter-generational and intra-generational relationships from both the Majority and Minority Worlds. The main themes include negotiated power, agency across contexts and negotiations of identity. The chapters show both the heritage of childhood studies, particularly within the UK, and where it may be going. One of the key aims of the book is to add to the limited but growing cross-world dialogue that encourages cross-cultural learning from research and practice in both Majority and Minority World contexts leading towards a more integrated global approach to childhood studies. This book was published as a special issue of Children's Geographies.

Book Children the Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kerry O'Halloran
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2022-12-30
  • ISBN : 1000826457
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Children the Law written by Kerry O'Halloran and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balancing a child’s welfare interests and rights so as to ensure recognition and respect for his or her autonomous identity, while facilitating family unity, has become a major challenge for modern family law. This book, following on from The Principle of the Welfare of the Child: A History, examines, contrasts, and compares the response of England and Wales and Ireland to that challenge. It does so by applying the same matrix of indicators to explore, in each country, the distinction between welfare interests and rights and to trace changes in the balance between them. By profiling the nations in accordance with the same indicators, it reveals important jurisdictional differences in the extent to which welfare interests or rights determine how the law is currently applied to children.

Book Measuring and Monitoring Children s Well Being

Download or read book Measuring and Monitoring Children s Well Being written by Asher Ben-Arieh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, any regular newspaper reader is likely to be exposed to reports on manifold forms of (physical, emotional, sexual) child abuse on the one hand, and abnormal behavior, misconduct or offences of children and minors on the other hand. Occasionally reports on children as victims and children as offenders may appear on the same issue or even the same page. Rather seldom the more complex and largely hidden phenomena of structural hostility or indifference of society with a view to children are being dealt with in the press. Such fragmentary, ambiguous, incoherent or even contradictory perception of children in modem society indicates that, firstly, there is a lack of reliable information on modem childhood, and secondly, children are still treated as a comparatively irrelevant population group in society. This conclusion may be surprising in particular when drawn at the end of The Century of the Child proclaimed by Ellen Key as early as 1902. Actually, there exist unclarities and ambiguities about the evolution of childhood in the last century not only in public opinion, but also in scientific literature. While De Mause with his psycho-historic model of the evolution of childhood, comprising different stages from infanticide, abandonment, ambivalence, intrusion, socialisation to support, underlines the continuous improvement of the condition of childhood throughout history and thus rather confirms Key's expectations, Aries, with his social history of childhood, seems to hold a more culturally pessimistic view.

Book Childhood Matters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jens Qvortrup
  • Publisher : Ashgate Publishing
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 424 pages

Download or read book Childhood Matters written by Jens Qvortrup and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Childhood Matters provides the reader with unique material on the living conditions of children in industrial society, and it presents a number of new theories and interpretations regarding the characteristics of childhood in modern society: in relation to family, economy, politics, time and space, intergenerational relations and demographic developments. The title Childhood Matters is pertinent in more than one sense. First of all, the book takes children seriously in their own right, in acknowledging their constructiveness as actors, not only for themselves and their own lives but also for society as a whole. Secondly, it challenges the idea of children whose target should be to become "integrated into society". School, day care and other structures constitute children's own life arenas, and it is forcefully argued that children's time and children's activities are their own, despite efforts by adult society to "colonize" them for its own purposes and interests.

Book The Sociology of Healthcare

Download or read book The Sociology of Healthcare written by Alan Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sociology of Healthcare, Second Edition explores the impact of current social changes on health, illness and healthcare, and provides an overview of the fundamental concerns in these areas. This new edition features a brand new chapter entitled ‘End of Life’ which will help health and social care workers to respond with confidence to one of the most difficult and challenging areas of care. The ‘End of Life’ chapter includes information on changing attitudes to death, theories of death and dying, and palliative care. All chapters have been thoroughly updated to address diversity issues such as gender, ethnicity and disability. In addition, expanded and updated chapters include ‘Childhood and Adolescence’ and ‘Health Inequalities’. The text is further enhanced through the use of case studies that relate theory to professional practice, and discussion questions to aid understanding. Links to websites direct the reader to further information on health, social wellbeing and government policies. This book is essential reading for all students of healthcare including nursing, medicine, midwifery and health studies and for those studying healthcare as part of sociology, social care and social policy degrees. “In an age when health policy follows an individualist model of “personal responsibility” this book by Alan Clarke demonstrates with a vast array of evidence, just how much there is such a thing as society. An excellent overall book.” Dr. Stephen Cowden, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, Coventry University
