Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Lincoln Standing like a tower, Our children shall behold his fame, The kindly-earnest, brave, foreseeing man, Sagacious, patient, dreading praise not blame, New birth of our new soil, the first American. Born on the twelfth day of February, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was a descendant of those hardy pioneers, who with no capital but strength and courage, a keen axe and an unerring ri e, carved new states from the solid Wilder ness, and built a great nation. In 1780, the grandfather of Abraham Lincoln, after whom President Lincoln was named, moved from Virginia to the fertile valleys of Kentucky, to settle near his friend and relative, Daniel Boone. Choosing a pleasant location, he built a log cabin and for six years worked diligently at clearing his new farm, always with his ri e near at hand, for the Kentucky forests were full of Indians, who, hidden behind trees or in thickets, watched for an opportunity to kill the white man and his helpless family, or to burn and destroy their dwellings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln: A Short, Illustrated Biography The father of the newborn was a carpenter by trade; a Stout, thickset man with a round face, swarthy complexion and black hair. Later, when books were written about his famous son, he was sketched as an ever moving, shiftless, good-for-nothing creature. But his record shows nothing of the kind. Thomas Lincoln was sober, hard-working, industrious, not a great suc cess in life, but neither was he a failure. He owned hun dreds of acres of land and he was never without a horse. A tax book in 1814 lists him fifteenth out of ninety eight names in the valuation of property owners. His forebears came from England. Samuel Lincoln, 3 weaver's apprentice, left the Old Country in 1637, settling in Hingham, Massachusetts. From there the Lincolns spread to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, then westward along the Wilderness Road into Ken tucky. And it was in that State that twenty-eight-year old Thomas Lincoln married twenty-two-year-old Nancy Hanks on June 12, 1806. As soon as Thomas was old enough to work, he drifted about wherever he could find a job. He grew up to be a wandering laboring boy, without any education and with very little ambition. But he was sober and honest. His friends liked him for his good humor and for the good stories he told. He was tall and stalwart and successful in the ath lctic contests of those days. He learned the trade of a carpenter, and married the pretty niece of the man in whose shop he worked. Her name was Nancy Hanks. She, too, was an orphan and had had a hard life. Book The True Story of Abraham Lincoln the American

Download or read book The True Story of Abraham Lincoln the American written by Elbridge S. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of Abraham Lincoln, the American: Told for Boys and Girls Columbus the discoverer of our country and Washington the father of our country - these two famous ones has this series of "Children's Lives of Great Men" recalled for young Americans. Now comes the third and crowning figure in the series - that of Abraham Lincoln, the savior of his country and, above all others, - the American. His story is as marvellous as a fairy tale and yet as simple as the truth. Sprung from nothing he rose to the highest eminence, and died a martyr for liberty, union and the rights of man. Upon his life, through four terrible years, hung the destinies of this republic and the redemption of a race. Today, the world reveres him as one of the most eminent rulers of any time; the future will yet place him where he rightly belongs - one of the worlds greatest men, perhaps, the greatest. For the boys and girls of America, brought up in the atmosphere of liberty, of justice and of patriotism, Abraham Lincoln the man of the people, has an especial claim to reverence. He stands as a type - as, before all others, the American. In the preface to the "The True Story of George Washington," the writer quoted, for boys and girls, a sentiment from one of the noblest of American thinkers and authors, James Russell Lowell. This introduction to the "True Story of Abraham Lincoln," can not be more fittingly closed than with the splendid tribute of this same prophetic poet, in his noble "Commemorative Ode," which every boy and girl of America should some day read: "These all are gone; and standing like a tower, Our children shall behold his fame, The kindly, earnest, brave, far-seeing man, Sagacious, patient, dreading praise, not blame, New birth of our new soil, the first American."
