Book Protection of Children During Armed Political Conflict

Download or read book Protection of Children During Armed Political Conflict written by Charles W. Greenbaum and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2006 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help researchers and professionals understand the possibilities for protecting children in violent political conflicts. This is the first book to be published on this important, complex and painful topic. Most other publications have concentrated on the effects of political violence on children and adults, but have little or nothing to say on prevention from the point of view of the social sciences. This book represents the beginnings of a new field of inquiry and policy. The book includes: research on the effects of exposure to political violence on children; reports by police and military experts of their experiences in protecting the public and children while keeping order; observations from people in human rights and childrens rights organizations on issues of attempting to report to and observe both sides in a conflict; and work by legal researchers on international law relating to the protection of children in political conflicts.

Book Child Soldiers

Download or read book Child Soldiers written by Ilene Cohn and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this path-breaking study, Professor Goodwin-Gill and Dr Cohn assess the status of the Child Soldier in international law and highlight the ways in which international humanitarian law fails to provide effective protection, particularly in the internal conflicts which are the most common battlefields today. Based upon empirical data gathered from places of conflict all over the world, the authors examine the consequences for child soldiers, their families and communities, of their participation in armed conflict. They conclude their study with practical suggestions for preventing recruitment, and call for a more coherent policy of treatment for those children who have participated in acts of violence."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Child Protection in Development

Download or read book Child Protection in Development written by Michael Bourdillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day millions of children in developing countries face adversities of many kinds, yet there is a shortage of sound evidence concerning their plight and an urgent need to identify the most appropriate and effective policy responses from among the multiple approaches that exist. This collection of journal papers aims to engage with researchers and debates in the field so as to understand better some of the numerous risks confronted by children in developing countries. It highlights the complexity of protecting children in various forms of adversity, challenges conventional wisdom about what protects children, demonstrates why it is essential to consult with children to protect them successfully, and suggests that successful protection must be based on strong empirical understanding of the situation and the perspectives of children and communities involved. The contributors are all experienced researchers and practitioners who have worked for many years with children in developing countries. The book offers suggestions for reform of current child protection policies, based on empirical findings around a range of child protection concerns, including children’s work, independent migration, family separation, early marriage, and military occupation. Together, the contributions provide a body of knowledge important to humanitarian and development policy and practice. This book was published as a special issue of Development in Practice.

Download or read book The Military Family written by James Martin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-07-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there are more military family members than there are total uniformed service members. Sixty percent of the military are married, including more than eighty percent of all career-status personnel, and many have small children. They come from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, and they represent a wide variety of family types, including single parents, dual career military couples, and families with eldercare responsibilities. In an effort to cut costs, many of the services utilized by military families are being privatized or outsourced to civilian service providers. This guide is designed to benefit anyone who provides services to these families, particularly those who may have little or no prior knowledge of the unique nature of military families and military family life. This book contains research-based information about the unique needs of military families across various duty-related conditions, as well as within the context of military career demands. Its multi-service focus addresses the provision of human services in both peace and wartime. Topics include military spouse employment, retirement issues, family support during deployments, the New Parent Support Program, and the experiences of adult children of military parents. The authors encourage an understanding of military community-based programs and services, and they offer the reader numerous resources for collaboration with the military community.

Book A Qualitative Case Study of Child Sexual Abuse in a Military Community

Download or read book A Qualitative Case Study of Child Sexual Abuse in a Military Community written by Sara Ewing Skinner and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately two million military connected children in the United States (Department of Defense [DoD], 2015a). In order to practice competently with this population, social workers need to understand how the unique characteristics of military life shape their experiences and their access to services. While research has noted the importance of cultural competence to understanding and practice in cases of child sexual abuse cases, there currently are no studies that specifically examine child sexual abuse cases in the cultural context of the military. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative case study is to fill this gap in the literature by describing the processes for responding to child sexual abuse cases in military communities and identifying characteristics of military life that impact the experience of child sexual abuse for military children and families as well as the community response to these cases. Civil-military relations theory is the lens used to examine the coordinated community response. Data were collected in the form of in-depth interviews with 15 experienced military and civilian professionals and supplemented by data from observations and documents. Based on a thematic analysis of the data, the findings of this study suggest that frequent moving of military personnel and families has an impact on the disclosure, reporting, and investigation of child sexual abuse cases as well as the continuity of services and collaboration. The discipline and control that characterizes military culture also impacts the course of these cases. Findings also suggest that the civil-military cultural gap impacts interagency collaboration . Implications for social work practice, education, and future research are discussed.

Book Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society

Download or read book Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation â€" their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.
