Book excerpt: This thesis looks at child labourers from a poor district in Old Cairo, Egypt and how they negotiate their roles. The children are all employed by the pottery factories in Old Cairo, and work six days a week for an average of 11 hours a day. Most of these children have never received any formal education and are under the legal age of employment. The thesis will explore the children's interactions with their families, friends and employers through the use of case studies, structured interviews and photo- elicitation. Most of the children attended a centre run by a local NGO that was geared to enhance their skills as artists, attending every week on Fridays, their only day off. The age range studied was from 9 to 15 years of age. The families of these child labourers depend on them financially, just as the children depend on their parents for security and nurturing. Child labourers participate actively within their own lives, constantly negotiating constraints and rights that they believe are important to them. Families actively seek what is best for the family as a unit, which includes preserving the pride of the family at all costs.

The current debates about child labour have conceived child labour as vital element for the survival of poor families. Most of the traditional interventions were focusing on combating child labour with no consideration to the living circumstances of the child labourers, controversially the new approaches by different national and international stakeholders started to adjust their interventions to be appealing to the circumstances of child labourers and their families. The main theme of this dissertation is to examine the effectiveness of one of these interventions and its sustainability. For that purpose, a field research in Cairo, the capital of Egypt has been conducted. The aim of the field research is to analyse one of the interventions that implemented through coordination between the Egyptian Government through the National Council of Childhood and Motherhood and one of the Egyptian NGOs Abo Soud Social Development Association NGO. This Egyptian NGO carried out a child labour oriented project in partnership with an Italian NGO Cooperation Internazionale Sud Sud through Children at Risk Programme that funded by the European Union. Using different quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the researcher tried to obtain the perception of child labourers and their families about the implemented activities in order to investigate whether the children's rights and best interests were considered in the course of designing and implementing the activities of the project. Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews in four low-income neighborhoods in Cairo, this book offers rich, novel and intimate data relating to poor women's lives and everyday forms of resistance to gender inequalities in the labor market and at home. In contrast to the common stereotype of Middle Eastern women as totally oppressed and devoid of agency, this study shows the complex and diverse ways in which low-income women devise strategies to contest existing gender arrangements and improve their situation. It is a significant contribution to current debates about poverty, gender, power, and resistance.
