Book excerpt: For the last two decades, child domestic work carried out in Nigeria as well as in other countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, has been given increasing attention by international policy makers and scientists. Yet, the research mainly focuses on the living and working conditions of these children, which also forms part of this book. However, in addition, political and pedagogical measures of intervention employed on international, national and local levels on child domestic work are also at the centre of analysis. Against the background of post-colonial theory the author studies the effects of social modernisation in Nigeria as a rapidly growing national economy on child domestic work and historically retraces the origins of this form of child work back to indigenous modes of socialisation and social security within the (pre-colonial) Nigerian extended family network. The research is based on field work in Nigeria, including interviews and documentary analysis.

In Nigeria, children are recruited from rural to urban areas to work as domestic servants with false promises including child fosterage by clandestine agents. The study found that poverty among the rural families, compounded by large family size, increasing number of orphans and vulnerable children, low rate of school enrollment, poor attitude to girl child education and the growing demand for domestic workers by working class families in urban areas as the root causes of the problem. The study recommended in addition to poverty alleviation measures, a strong awareness creation to change mindset about children's exchange in the society and suggested some remedial measures for the prevention of recruitment of children for domestic work as well as rescue abused and traumatized victims now in the urban areas.

It looks at the circumstances that pushed them into employment, the hardships and humiliations they face therein, as well as the benefits they derive, including, in some cases, education. Most children wanted improvements in their living and working conditions. They did not want to be stopped from working, perceiving that this would worsen their already harsh lives. While child domestic wok is problematic, and often lays children open to various types of abuse, it can also offer critical support and patronage to very disadvantaged children.

Book excerpt: For this volume Gil examines and interprets a series of nationwide studies of child abuse that were initiated in 1965 in an attempt to unravel the context of social and cultural forces with which violent behavior against children is associated. He begins with a definition: "Physical abuse of children is the intentional, nonaccidental use of physical force, or intentional nonaccidental acts of omission, on the part of a parent or other caretaker interacting with a child in his care, aimed at hurting, injuring, or destroying that child." With an approach that is epidemiologic, social, and cultural, rather than clinical and psychological, he compiles findings from press and public-opinion surveys, from analyses of nearly 13,000 incidents of child abuse reported through legal channels across the country during 1967 and 1968, and from a comprehensive study of more than 1300 incidents reported in a representative sample of cities and counties. He deals with incidence and community response rather than with case histories. The findings, Gil maintains, suggest that violence against children is rooted in culturally determined theories and practices of child-rearing, with a higher incidence among the lower educational and socioeconomic strata of society, among broken families, and among families with four or more children. He concludes that perhaps the most serious form of child abuse is that inflicted by society rather than by parents and guardians. This societal abuse is manifested by the statistics on infant mortality, hunger and malnutrition, poverty, inadequate medical care, poor education, and officially sanctioned physical abuse in schools, correctional institutions, child care facilities, and juvenile courts. The author further concludes that American culture encourages the use of a certain measure of physical force in rearing children. Straightforward and clearly presented, Gil's book also suggests a typology of child abuse and recommends a set of structural measures and policies designed to reduce the incidence of abuse through an attack on its apparent roots within the fabric of society.

This study goes beyond the dominant discourse on child labor to add to the existing literature by exploring and revealing the features and elements of child objectification that are underestimated in previous literature and in the world. The researcher undertakes to listen to the stories of victims of child objectification and attempts suggestions on how to limit it. The objective of this study is to illustrates the phenomenon of family background as the trigger for child objectification in Nigeria, discuss the ordeal of the objectified children in Nigeria and Explore expectation for a better future as a precondition of continuation of child objectification in Nigeria. Drawing from the social constructivist framework and grounded theory of qualitative research, the findings from the data narrated by the objectified victims disclosed the ordeal they went through. They were used and exploited, abused and their basic human rights violated. The experience of these children fell short of expectations: They worked like machines, were confined to their employer’s home with little or no channel of no communication with their families and friends, they were generally maltreated. Despite the efforts by the Nigerian government together with some Non-Governmental Organizations to put an end to these human rights abuse against these minors, the practice seems to go on with most being silently committed. From the confessions of the victims, it is thought that the place of social work in Nigeria is primordial in tackling this crisis and bringing an end to child objectification. It concludes with recommendation aim at programmes and policies to inspire thoughts about these objectified children not only as topics of concern, but as valuable social actors with needs and goals.

Book excerpt: Children in Kenya continue to suffer diverse types of violence against them despite the fact that Kenyan laws are prohibiting violence and various prevention measures exist. In order to achieve effective prevention of violence, adequate knowledge of risk factors is imperative. In Kenya, such knowledge is lacking and there is limited attention given to the multifaceted nature of the social environment in which children grow up and how such environments aggravate violence against children as well as hinder prevention measures. This qualitative research applied the ecological model of socialisation of Urie Bronfenbrenner as its theoretical and analytical framework in examining risk factors and consequences, responses and projects. In assessing what is being done to prevent violence against children in Kenya, the author reviews existing projects and policies that shape prevention measures including the possible influence of international conventions. He also analyses diverse sets of ideas, attitudes, philosophies and practices that explain the similar and the different notions of childhood in African and in Western settings. Exploring the social construction of violence, the author examines ideas and discourses that explain the heterogeneous characteristics of violence and how their understanding, occurrence and severity vary from culture to culture. Alphonce C. L. Omolo (born 1966 in Kisumu, Kenya) studied Childhood (Sociology of Childhood and Children's Rights) at the Institute of Education, University of London. He completed his doctoral degree (Dr. phil.) at the Faculty for Philosophy and Educational Research in the Field of Comparative Education at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, in 2014. He has extended experience and worked in different capacities in street children and other children's programmes in Kenya and Tanzania between 1987 and 2010.
