Book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research

Download or read book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves -- they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains--including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems--and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Abuse and Neglect: Forensic Issues in Evidence, Impact and Management provides an overview of all aspects of child abuse and neglect, approaching the topic. from several viewpoints. First, child abuse is considered from both victimization and offending perspectives, and although empirical scholarship informs much of the content, there is applied material from international experts and practitioners in the field—from policing, to child safety and intelligence. The content is presented to align with university semester timetables in three parts, including 1) Typologies, methods and platforms for abuse, 2) Impacts and prevention, and (3) Issues surrounding recognition and management of child abuse. This book fills a void in the available university-level classroom-targeted literature, promoting the inclusion of child abuse as a standalone subject within university curricula. As such, readership includes undergraduate and postgraduate students, teachers and wider scholarship, as well as practitioners; including those from psychology, criminology, criminal justice and law enforcement. Presents an up-to-date approach that tackles child abuse from several viewpoints Includes typologies, risk and protective factors, recognition, responses, biopsychosocial outcomes, public policy, prevention, institutional abuse, children and corrections, treatment and management, and myths and fallacies Provides information on significant advances in knowledge areas, such as disclosure, the neurological effects of child abuse and neuroplasticity, and online and virtual child abuse

Book Child Abuse and Neglect Data Snapshot

Download or read book Child Abuse and Neglect Data Snapshot written by DC Action for Children and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect in the District rose by 27 percent in FY 2009. This dramatic spike came after two consecutive years of decline in the number of substantiated cases reported the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA). In FY 2010, the number of closed, substantiated cases dropped back down to 1,691, more in line with the levels from FY 2005-2008, but still slightly higher than in FY 2008. The rate of child abuse and neglect in D.C.--16.8 per 1,000 children in 2010--was higher than the rate of much larger metropolitan areas. In 2009, Cook County, Ill. (Chicago), had a rate of 5.8, Dallas County, Texas, had a rate of 8.9, and 2010 Los Angeles County and Riverside County, California, had rates of 10.9 and 11.8, respectively. Rates in D.C. are likely higher due to a combination of risk factors, including high levels of poverty, unemployment, single parent households and substance abuse. The District's child poverty rate was at 29 percent in 2009, compared to the 20 percent national child poverty rate. D.C. families were also hit hard by the recession, and unemployment remains in the double-digits in many parts of the city. In 2008, 41 percent of children in the District were in households without secure parental employment. By 2009, that figure had risen to 44 percent. In 2010, 15 percent of children in D.C. had at least one unemployed parent, compared to 11 percent of all children nationally. Research has shown that recessions have a lag effect on child well-being. The most recent recession officially ended in June 2009, but it may take the most vulnerable families longer to recover. The effects of hardships on children may last for years or a lifetime. (Contains 2 figures, 1 box, and 15 endnotes.).
