Book excerpt: The scrutiny of the Office of Science and Technology (OSI) is one of the core tasks of the Committee. During the period covered by this report the OSI and DTI Innovation Group have successfully merged and there has been a new performance management system. There has been a welcomed increase in the science budget but the breach of the principle of ring fencing the budget is deprecated. An important part of OSI's work is reviewing the use of science in Government departments. Although these are valuable the pace of review and information available on them needs to be improved.

This book was released on 2007-11-07 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 28 June 2007, the Prime Minister announced changes to the machinery of Government that had an impact upon the select committee system within the House of Commons. As a result, the Science and Technology Select Committee will be dissolved and replaced by a new Innovation, Universities and Skills Select Committee at the beginning of the next session of Parliament. This Report explains the role that the Science and Technology Committee has played within Parliament and the science community. It outlines the Committee's innovations, its impact and concerns regarding future science scrutiny in the House of Commons. It concludes that, in the long term, a separate Science and Technology Committee is the only way to guarantee a permanent focus on science across Government within the select committee system and recommends that the House be given an opportunity to revisit this issue.

Book Starting Science Again

Download or read book Starting Science Again written by Martin Braund and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ′The structure [of this book] encourages active participation via reflective activity boxes which further allows for the engagement and consolidation of ideas...Evidence based research is cited resulting in the author suggesting a number of practical activities to encourage progression and continuity in science′ - ESCalate Why do pupils′ learning and motivation slow down markedly as they move from primary to secondary school? Why is this situation worse in science than in any other curriculum subject? This book combines reports of and reflection on best practice in improving progression and continuity of teaching and learning in science - particularly at that transition stage between primary and secondary school. Presenting the views of teachers and pupils on progression, learning and application of science, the book suggests practical ways of improving teaching and learning in science. Each chapter includes examples of learning materials with notes on how these might be used or adapted by teachers in their own classroom settings. Science teaching in secondary schools is often based on assumptions that children know or can do very little, so the job in the secondary school becomes one of showing pupils how to start ′doing science properly′, as if from scratch. The damage that this false view can do to pupils′ learning, motivation and confidence is clear. This book will help teachers to assess children′s prior knowledge effectively and build meaningful and enjoyable science lessons.

Book The Politics of Destroying Surplus Small Arms

Download or read book The Politics of Destroying Surplus Small Arms written by Aaron Karp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it receives much less attention than better known disarmament processes, the destruction of small arms is reshaping the military arsenals of the world. Out of roughly 200 modern military small arms world-wide, about 500,000 are destroyed every year. The commitment of major governments and international organizations makes small arms destruction is a permanent addition to the global disarmament repertoire. But the prospects for greater military small arms disarmament may be declining, as war in Afghanistan and Iraq create unprecedented demand for second-hand weaponry. Inconspicuous disarmament of small arms and ammunition is reshaping the global picture of firearms, light weapons and ammunition. The process is far from comprehensive, but much more than cosmetic. Small arms destruction is here to stay, but its contributions may be fleeting. This book is the first full-length examination of the issue. The case studies in this volume examine the politics of military small arms disarmament. When, they ask, is surplus destruction most likely? And what can be done to make destruction more likely and more effective? Case studies examine small arms destruction by NATO and the OSCE, and in Bulgaria, Cambodia, Germany, Kazakhstan, Papua New Guinea, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and others. This book was published as a special issue of Contemporary Security Policy.

  • Publisher : CRC Press

  • ISBN : 1315358069
  • Pages : 434 pages

Download or read book Hazardous Waist written by Alan White and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes a foreword by Peter Baker, Chief Executive, The Men's Health Forum. Male weight problems are a serious public health issue and can lead to hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes and cancer. If current trends continue, the prospect of the majority of men becoming overweight is a very real one, and urgent action is imperative. The middle-aged spread that most men 'expect' to develop as they enter into their thirties and forties is now occurring much earlier with boys and young men developing life limiting weight problems. This multidisciplinary guide provides a gender sensitive approach to weight issues. Men need to be targeted specifically and in a male-focused manner, in order to overcome the multitude of contributing factors in their weight gain; social influences, dietary restrictions, education, cultural expectations, psychological considerations and exercise regime. This book takes a balanced approach, offering practical guidance as well as evidence-based research, academic perspectives and personal experiences. The advice is easy to implement and has been proven in real-life settings. All healthcare professionals, nutritionists and dieticians will find the assistance invaluable. It is also highly recommended for psychologists, counsellors and therapists, particularly those working with men. Healthcare policy makers and shapers too, will find much of interest. 'A definitive and seminal book that will change the way male weight problems are tackled in the UK and beyond.' - Peter Baker, in the Foreword.
