Book Chief Rondo

Download or read book Chief Rondo written by Medaria "Rondo" Arradondo and published by Diversion Books. This book was released on 2025-04-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the fifth anniversary of the murder of George Floyd comes a landmark book on leadership, justice, and race by the first Black police chief in the history of the Minneapolis Police Department, the man who led through and beyond the crime, the historic protest movement, and the nationwide reckoning on race and policing On May 25, 2020, at a neighborhood convenience store, George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police. In the weeks that followed, the city and the entire nation erupted with the most destructive and costly civil unrest in the United States since the Los Angeles riots 28 years earlier. Standing steadfast in the middle was Medaria “Rondo” Arradondo, the first Black police chief in the 152-year history of the Minneapolis Police Department. Growing up in Minneapolis, Rondo understood from an early age that while police could be heroes, they could also be threats, especially to Black men like himself. When he became an officer, his purpose was clear: he would serve the loving community that raised him and would always treat others with dignity and respect, no matter the color of their skin. In 2020 when Chief Rondo found himself at the helm of a troubled department facing a national crisis, he put accountability first. Instead of walking the line between Black and Blue, he drew a line between right and wrong. Chief Rondo is a first-hand account of these pivotal events, offering new insights into his leadership and the broader impact on American policing. He reveals the challenges of working within a flawed system and provides inspiration for all leaders. Chief Rondo’s decisive and courageous actions led to one of the greatest social justice victories in our time: the State and Federal convictions of Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao, who were responsible for George Floyd’s murder, challenging the "blue wall” that shielded police from accountability. It was an outcome so rare that Chauvin is one of just eleven non-Federal officers convicted of murder out of the 13,000 on-duty killings since 2005.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unbeknownst to most, the Luyia Nation is a congeries of Bantu and assimilated Nilotic clans principally the Luo, Kalenjin, and Maasai. Created seventy years ago, the Luyia tribe is still evolving in a slow process that seeks to harmonize the historico-cultural institutions that define the eighteen subnations in Kenya alone. Available records indicate that geophysical spread of Luyia-speaking people extends beyond the Kenyan frontier into Uganda and Tanzania with some Luyia clans having extant brethren in Rwanda, Congo, Zambia, and Cameroon. The 862 Luyia clans in Kenya are amorphous units united only by common cultural and linguistic bonds. The political union between these clans is a pesky issue that has eluded the community since formation of the superethnic polity. Although postindependence scholars dismissed oral accounts of Egyptian ancestry, new anthropological evidence links the Bantu, including those in West Africa, to ancient Misri (Egypt). A major historical and cultural change in Buluyia occurred a little more than a century ago when natives first made contact with the Western world. The meeting in 1883 by a Scottish explorer, Joseph Thomson, with Nabongo Mumia, the Wanga king, laid the foundation for British imperialism in this part of Africa.

Book The Minneapolis Reckoning

Download or read book The Minneapolis Reckoning written by Michelle S. Phelps and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the beginning of the Black Lives Matter Movement in 2014, police brutality, police violence, and police reform have emerged as central public policy concerns, and throughout that time, Minneapolis has been at the center of these conversations, both as a leader in progressive police reform and as a demonstration of the failure of those reforms. From solidarity protests with Ferguson in 2014, to an occupation of a police precinct following the killing of Jamar Clark in 2015, protests following the death of Justine Damond (Ruszczyk) in 2017, and the uprising following George Floyd's murder in 2020, activists in Minneapolis have long demanded that the city take measures to make Black Lives Matter. In 2020, these demands shifted from police reform and accountability toward police defunding and abolition, culminating in a deeply contested ballot initiative to replace the Minneapolis Police Department with a new Department of Public Safety-a debate that has come to symbolize the rift in opinion about the role of policing that continues to divide the nation. The Minneapolis Reckoning uses Minneapolis as a case study to understand policing, police violence, and anti-police-violence activism in the twenty-first century. Drawing on fieldwork conducted between 2017 and 2021, as well as detailed historical analyses of transformations in the Minneapolis Police Department from the Great Migration to the present, Michelle Phelps tells the complex story of elected officials, elite interests, activist organizers, and residents struggling to gain power over the police. Tracing the ways in which movements pushing for the transformation of policing have crashed into the local politics of race, inequality, and violence, both in the years leading up to the murder of George Floyd and in its aftermath, Phelps offers revealing lessons about the political struggle over policing and the power of social movements for racial justice to create change"--

Book excerpt: “An unforgettable reading experience.”―Eric Holder With this powerful and intimate trial diary, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison asks the key question: How do we break the wheel of police violence and finally make it stop? The murder of George Floyd sparked global outrage. At the center of the conflict and the controversy, Keith Ellison grappled with the means of bringing justice for Floyd and his family. Now, in this riveting account of the Derek Chauvin trial, Ellison takes the reader down the path his prosecutors took, offering different breakthroughs and revelations for a defining, generational moment of racial reckoning and social justice understanding. Each chapter of BREAK THE WHEEL goes spoke to spoke along the wheel of the system as Ellison examines the roles of prosecutors, defendants, heads of police unions, judges, activists, legislators, politicians, and media figures, each in his attempt to end this chain of violence and replace it with empathy and shared insight. Ellison’s analysis of George Floyd’s life and the rich trial context he provides demonstrates that, while it may seem like an unattainable goal, lasting change and justice can be achieved.

Book excerpt: This eclectic play dramatises the desperate nature of man, which propels him to devise fraudulent ways out of difficult situations, an act that results in contentions arising from collision of conflicting forces. Before the climax of the play, a prologue and four preceding parts provide a buildup to the final part, which marks the convergence of the performing arts professionals whose works the play projects. The prologue catalogues pockets of infractions that this world is made of and which have deprived the society of the much-needed peace. In part 1, Old Man, a divine personality, calls three people into being: Alujo, Arinjo, and Awoko, who surprisingly are versatile in the arts of performance. An attempt at fraudulent practices and theft form the conflicts in parts 2 to 4, all of which are resolved by Old Man, but not without strong moral impartations. The final part climaxes as a melting pot of the performing arts as three versatile professionals Alujo, Arinjo, and Awokolock horn in an attempt to win the heart of King Adetokes daughter. However, the kings dishonest intent draws the ire of Old Man whose intervention further strengthens the arts of the performers.
