Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicot County, situated along the Mississippi River, was created in 1823. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Europeans like Frenchman René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle visited the region. With the French influence, the area came to be known as Chicot for the "snags" and "stumps" that populated the swampy bottomlands of the Mississippi River. Beginning in the 1830s, slave-based agriculture dominated the county's economy. By 1860, it was filled with prosperous cotton producers; many plantations were concentrated near the Mississippi River. The county's three principal towns--Dermott (1890), Lake Village (1898), and Eudora (1904)--incorporated as the county began to modernize. Local merchants flourished in the early decades of the 20th century, and Lake Village, situated on Lake Chicot, attracted many tourists. More recently, the county has suffered population loss and struggled economically, but agriculture still thrives, and the county's proud traditions continue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every King needs a wily advisor. For Henry III of France, it’s Chicot the Jester. Quick witted and a pro at manipulation, Chicot must use all his skills to keep the King (and himself) at the top. The second of Dumas’ "Valois Romances", this novel continues the saga of the powerful Valois dynasty. Intertwined with Chicot’s story is that of Bussy d'Amboise, a gentleman who has fallen for a married woman. With these parallel plotlines, Dumas offer up plenty of cliffhangers, political skullduggery, and secret assignations. "Chicot the Jester" is a great read for fans of courtly intrigue, such as Netlix’s "The Crown" or Hilary Mantel’s "Wolf Hall" trilogy. Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a hugely popular 19th Century French writer. Born of mixed French and Haitian heritage, Dumas first rose to prominence in Paris as a playwright, but later gained international fame with his historical fiction. Often co-authored with other writers, these stories wove together swashbuckling adventure, romance, and real events from France’s past. Among the best known are "The Three Musketeers", and its sequels "Twenty Years After", and "Le Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later". Set across four decades, this trilogy follows the rise of the dashing D’Artagnan—from hot-headed soldier to trusted captain under Louis XIV. Dumas’ other novels include "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Black Tulip". His works have been adapted into more than 200 movies, including The Man in the Iron Mask starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "THE VALOIS TRILOGY: Queen Margot, Chicot de Jester & The Forty-Five Guardsmen" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Valois Trilogy covers the historical context of French Wars of Religion, during the Valois dynasty. The trilogy contains novels Marguerite de Valois (The Reine Margot), Chicot de Jester (La Dame de Monsoreau) and The Forty-Five Guardsmen. Marguerite de Valois or La Reine Margot is a historical novel set in Paris in August 1572 during the reign of Charles IX. The novel's protagonist is Marguerite de Valois, better known as Margot, daughter of the deceased Henry II and the infamous scheming Catholic power player Catherine de Medici. Chicot de Jester or La Dame de Monsoreau is concerned with fraternal royal strife at the court of Henri III. Tragically caught between the millstones of history are the gallant Count de Bussy and the woman he adores, la Dame de Monsoreau. The action takes place between February and September 1578, six years after the massacre of St. Bartholomew with which La Reine Margot begins. The Forty-Five Guardsmen is the third and final novel of the trilogy of Valois. The action takes place between 1585 and 1586, thirteen years after the massacre of St. Bartholomew. Having succeeded his brother Charles IX, Henry III reigned for ten years without being able to calm the political and religious agitation that delivers the kingdom to factions. Alexandre Dumas, père (1802-1870) was a French writer whose works have been translated into nearly 100 languages and he is one of the most widely read French authors. His most famous works are The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.
