Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Chicago Club In different ways and through various disadvantages our attention has been called to the losses suffered by the Club in the total destruction of its records by the fire of 1871, and the partial destruction of the same by fire, November 3, 1887, and to the total absence of any system for the preservation of our current documentary history. The Club has, for example, no file of its Annual Reports. We have not even copies of any of our Club books as issued from time to time. We have, therefore, invited Mr. Edward T. Blair to undertake the task of preparing and publishing for us a history of our Club from its very beginning, and he has kindly accepted the responsibility. Such a work will be of the greatest inter- est to us all, and will be an important contribution to the history of Chicago. Book Mr Wrigley s Ball Club

Download or read book Mr Wrigley s Ball Club written by Roberts Ehrgott and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chicago in the Roaring Twenties was a city of immigrants, mobsters, and flappers with one shared passion: the Chicago Cubs. It all began when the chewing-gum tycoon William Wrigley decided to build the world’s greatest ball club in the nation’s Second City. In this Jazz Age center, the maverick Wrigley exploited the revolutionary technology of broadcasting to attract eager throngs of women to his renovated ballpark. Mr. Wrigley’s Ball Club transports us to this heady era of baseball history and introduces the team at its crazy heart—an amalgam of rakes, pranksters, schemers, and choirboys who take center stage in memorable successes, equally memorable disasters, and shadowy intrigue. Readers take front-row seats to meet Grover Cleveland Alexander, Rogers Hornsby, Joe McCarthy, Lewis “Hack” Wilson, Gabby Hartnett. The cast of characters also includes their colorful if less-extolled teammates and the Cubs’ nemesis, Babe Ruth, who terminates the ambitions of Mr. Wrigley’s ball club with one emphatic swing.

Download or read book Mysterious Chicago written by Adam Selzer and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Chicago historian Adam Selzer, expert on all of the Windy City’s quirks and oddities, comes a compelling heavily researched anthology of the stories behind its most fascinating unsolved mysteries. To create this unique volume, Selzer has collected forty unsolved mysteries from the 1800s to modern day. He has poured through all newspaper, magazine, and book references to them, and consulted expert historians. Topics covered include who really started the great Chicago fire, who was the first “automobile murderer,” and even if there was actually a vampire slaying at Rose Hill cemetery. The result is both a colorful read to get lost in, a window to a world of curiosity and wonder, as well as a volume that separates fact from fiction—true crime from urban legend. Complementing the gripping stories Selzer presents are original images of the crime and its suspects as developed by its original investigators. Readers will marvel at how each character and crime were presented, and happily journey with Selzer as he presents all facts and theories presented at the time of the “crime” and uses modern hindsight to assemble the pieces.

Book The Chicago Cub Shot For Love

Download or read book The Chicago Cub Shot For Love written by Jack Bales and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1932, with the Cubs in the thick of the pennant race, Billy Jurges broke off his relationship with Violet Popovich to focus on baseball. The famously beautiful showgirl took it poorly, marching into his hotel room with a revolver in her purse. Both were wounded in the ensuing struggle, but Jurges refused to press charges. Even without their star shortstop, Chicago made it to the World Series, only to be on the wrong end of Babe Ruth's legendary Called Shot. Using hundreds of original sources, Jack Bales profiles the lives of the ill-fated couple and traces the ripple effects of the shooting on the Cubs' tumultuous season.
