Download or read book Chewing Gum in America 1850 1920 written by Kerry Segrave and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans began chewing gum long before 1850, scraping resin from spruce trees, removing any bits of bark or insects and chewing the finished product. Commercially-made gum was of limited availability and came in three types--tree resin, pretroleum-based paraffin and chicle-based--the latter, a natural latex, ultimately eclipsing its rivals by 1920. Once considered a women-only bad habit, chewing gum grew in popularity and was soon indulged in by all segments of society. The gum industry tried vigorously to export the habit, but it proved uniquely American and would not stick abroad. This book examines the chewing gum industry in the United States from 1850 to 1920, the rise and spread of gum chewing and the reactions--nearly all negative--to the habit from editorial writers, reformers, religious figures, employers and the courts. The age-old problem of what to do with chewed gum--some saved it in lockets around their neck; some shared it with friends--is also covered.
Download or read book How to Raise a Puppy written by Stephanie Rousseau and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-10-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Raise a Puppy moves away from the traditional approach to raising puppies, focused on obedience and control, and instead takes an holistic, dog-centred approach. Drawing on research into how dogs naturally rear their young, and how dogs have evolved to behave and spend their time, it supports a new way of sharing our lives with our dogs. It also offers advice on dealing with some of the common challenges people experience with puppies, and tips for managing adolescence. A much-needed resource for dog trainers, veterinarians and behaviourists to recommend to clients, this conveys a powerful message to help overcome all too common issues so many people have with their puppies. Packed with practical advice, it offers an overdue "puppy perspective", with respect for a dog as a sentient being at its core.

Download or read book The Voyage of the CSS Shenandoah written by William C. Whittle and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederate cruiser Shenandoah was the last of a group of commerce raiders deployed to prey on Union merchant ships. Ordered to the Pacific Ocean, the Shenandoah's successes compared favorably with the exploits of the more celebrated Alabama and Florida but have never been as well known because the Shenandoah's story coincided with the war's end. The expedition, however, from England to the Indian Ocean, Australia and the South Pacific, the Bering Sea, San Francisco, and finally to port in Liverpool, was one of the best documented during the Civil War. Among the most significant accounts of the expedition is the journal of Lieutenant William Whittle Jr., which is presented here with annotations from other journals, the official records and logs, and newspaper accounts or the Shenandoah's activities. These fascinating primary sources bring to life the history of this remarkable voyage. Book jacket.

Download or read book Bourbon 101 written by Albert W. A. Schmid and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rumors are true; there are more barrels of bourbon than there are people in Kentucky. In fact, statistics tell us there are nearly two barrels of aging bourbon for every Bluegrass State citizen. With a population of nearly 4.5 million and each barrel yielding close to 200 bottles, it's safe to say the average Kentuckian doesn't have to look far for a bottle of amber gold. While Kentucky may be known as bourbon's home base, for bourbon lovers everywhere, the act of drinking bourbon is about more than just its acquisition. It is a lore and an experience, but most of all it is a legacy. As people across the United States and the world begin to wake up to the allure of Kentucky's state beverage, bourbon is having its moment—the act of coveting, collecting and savoring bottles is now a worthy passion to pursue. With budding enthusiasts clamoring to know more about this American-born creation, finding an entry point into the history and culture of the spirit is a task not easily undertaken. Bourbon 101 offers a distinctive and introductory approach to learning about the world of bourbon. Award-winning author Albert W. A. Schmid takes students through a crash-course in all-things bourbon including its history, production, and enduring cultural identity. Schmid introduces new enthusiasts to the lexicon of bourbon and provides a starting point for those wanting to develop their palate and find the bourbon that best suits their own taste. Told through the lens of Schmid's own experiences and interactions with experts in the bourbon world, the book is as much a handbook as it is a love letter to a beverage that has left an indelible impression on those who've dared to take the first sip.
