Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cheveley, or the Man of Honour, Vol. 3 of 3 Thank God, this at last is settled, thought' Lord Melford, as he finished the complimentary peroration; he was therefore not a little taken aback when Lord Denham drew himself up to his full height; his saturnine face growing still darker, his determined mouth becoming more rigid, and his penetrating flashing eyes, piercing with a sort of microscopic power into those of Lord Melford, as he coldly replied, Then, my Lord, if it's her Majesty's per sonal wish, it is worth asking as a personal favour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cheveley, or the Man of Honour, Vol. 1 of 3 Dear sir, - In dedicating these volumes to you, I acquit myself of a debt of gratitude to the only man whose integrity I have found um impeachable, and whose friendship I have proved unvarying. Among the most deserving of my own sex I have, in many instances, found sincere and unchanging affection, united with those higher and rarer virtues, which from adorning, reconcile us to human nature, though truth compels me to acknowledge that I have known others whose deep-rooted selfishness, puerile vanity, and vacillating weakness of character proved them to be nature's worst anomalies - masculine women! "Bless me! what a orrid villain," interrupted Mrs. Stokes; "murder five wives! and why wasn't he hanged five times for it at Newgate, pray?" "Why, my dear, he was a gentleman and a genius, and they may do anything; it is only common people that are deprived of murder, with many other luxuries," said Datchet. "And more shame for them as deprives'em," exclaimed Mrs. Stokes, tying on her bonnet vehemently. "Well, to go on with my story," continued Datchet, "while we were still talking, who should come in but Mr. Trevyllian himself] I must confess he was a wonderful looking person: there was a kind of patent, selfacting-villain air about him, that gave one the idea of the devil's being a baby to him in wickedness, that was truly surprising and uncommon; his wife (the one at the time being in waiting, 1 mean) he had, it appears, sent to bed, and he had come to try and effect a transfer with Captain Milton Scroggins for some cypress wine he had lying in the docks, in exchange for some of the captain's much-vaunted tobacco. "Scroggins expressed himself but too proud to have it in his power to oblige so great a man; and then glancing at a pair of large, yellow, embroidered Turkish slippers that the new-comer wore, added, ' You must be cruel easy, sir, I calculate, in those outlandish shufflers; pity they're not in parliament, they'd bring forred such a capital motion on the corn laws.' "At this, Captain Milton Scroggins and the great man laughed together for five minutes, and then the latter added, ' Yes, and, like most of the motions of that house, it would be all " leather and prunella."' This rose Mr. Trevyllian in my opinion, because, though he was what Mr....

He heard the sob of the wind; he looked with dazed eyes on the confused movements of the fisher-folk; he turned to the heaving sea, and a thought which terrified him - which he tried to beat out of his brain, took possession of him. Was he to take his place amongst these mourners, not as their guide and comforter, but as their fellow-sufferer? Had the cruel sea robbed him also of his treasure? Book excerpt: Excerpt from All in a Garden Fair, the Simple Story of Three Boys and a Girl, Vol. 3 of 3 I wish to tell, in my own words, how I chose between the three men who had done me the greatest honour that a man can confer upon a woman - the offer of his love and service. It is, I know, just as true that no greater honour can happen to a man than the confidence and love of a woman. And yet - to me - because I am a woman, I suppose, it does not seem quite SO great a. Thing. My father, in the gal lant and old fashioned way with which he always talks of women, reminding one of old books, powdered wigs, patches, and hoop petticoats, says, that the highest distinction and glory for a man is to have it recorded that he was loved. This book was released on 2018-05-12 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Clifford is a novel published in 1830 by English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton. It tells the life of Paul Clifford, a man who leads a dual life as both a criminal and an upscale gentleman. The book was successful upon its release. It is the source of the famous opening phrase "It was a dark and stormy night.. Paul Clifford tells the story of a chivalrous highwayman in the time of the French Revolution. Brought up not knowing his origins and living an evil life, Clifford is arrested for theft. The love of his life is Lucy Brandon. Brought before her uncle, Judge Brandon, for the robbery, it is unexpectedly revealed that Clifford is Brandon's son. That revelation complicates the trial, but Judge Brandon tries Clifford and condemns him to death. Clifford escapes from jail. With his lover and cousin, Lucy, he makes his way to America......... Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, PC (25 May 1803 - 18 January 1873) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, and politician. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling novels which earned him a considerable fortune. He coined the phrases "the great unwashed," "pursuit of the almighty dollar," "the pen is mightier than the sword," "dweller on the threshold," and the well-known and much-parodied opening line "It was a dark and stormy night." After his death, Bulwer-Lytton suffered a tremendous decline in reputation and today is best known for the "dark and stormy night" line and the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, to determine the "opening sentence of the worst of all possible novels." Life: Bulwer-Lytton was born on 25 May 1803 to General William Earle Bulwer of Heydon Hall and Wood Dalling, Norfolk and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton, daughter of Richard Warburton Lytton of Knebworth, Hertfordshire. He had two older brothers, William Earle Lytton Bulwer (1799-1877) and Henry (1801-1872), later Lord Dalling and Bulwer. When Edward was four, his father died and his mother moved to London. He was a delicate, neurotic child and was discontented at a number of boarding schools. But he was precocious and Mr. Wallington at Baling encouraged him to publish, at the age of fifteen, an immature work, Ishmael and Other Poems. In 1822 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he met John Auldjo, but shortly afterwards moved to Trinity Hall. In 1825 he won the Chancellor's Gold Medal for English verse. In the following year he took his BA degree and printed, for private circulation, a small volume of poems, Weeds and Wild Flowers. He purchased a commission in the army in 1826, but sold it in 1829 without serving. In August 1827, he married Rosina Doyle Wheeler (1802-1882), a famous Irish beauty, but against his mother's wishes, who withdrew his allowance, so that he was forced to work for a living. They had two children, Lady Emily Elizabeth Bulwer-Lytton (1828-1848), and (Edward) Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton (1831-1891) who became Governor-General and Viceroy of British India (1876-1880). His writing and political work strained their marriage, while his infidelity embittered Rosina;in 1833 they separated acrimoniously and in 1836 the separation became legal. Three years later, Rosina published Cheveley, or the Man of Honour (1839), a near-libellous fiction bitterly satirising her husband's alleged hypocrisy. In June 1858, when her husband was standing as parliamentary candidate for Hertfordshire, she indignantly denounced him at the hustings. He retaliated by threatening her publishers, withholding her allowance, and denying her access to the children. Finally he had her committed to a mental asylum, but after a public outcry, she was released a few weeks later. This incident was chronicled in her memoir, A Blighted Life (1880)...................
