Book Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns Classic Reprint written by Rupert H. Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chester in the Plantagenet and Tudor Reigns An attempt has been made in the following pages to put in a convenient from gleanings from the Collection of Historical Documents relating to the Plantagenet and Tudor Periods, which are preserved in the Muniment Room of the Corporation of the City of Chester. The entire collection, consisting of Charters, Municipal "Books, Letters and Corporation Accounts, and upwards of 1,400 sets of filed documents, may be roughly computed to have in its several divisions more than 200,000 separate writings." An interesting account is given by Mr. Jeaffreson of the mischances which successively befel these valuable documents: how they were drenched with rain owing to the premature unroofing of the building by workmen during some alterations: how, later, in 1861 they were exposed to fire as well as water - the fire which destroyed the old Town Hall, and the water used to put out the conflagration: how, after being removed to the old City Gaol, they ran quite as serious a risk of destruction from damp and neglect, being placed in a room which was neither dry nor properly ventilated, where they lay in moisture and disorder covered with dust and nursing seeds of slow decay, until the Town Council applied to the Deputy Keeper of Records in 1878 for advice and assistance. This application resulted in the excellent and systematic arrangement of these important Records by Mr. Jeaffreson. The documents which have been consulted for the present Work may be classified as follows: - 1. The Collection of Charters. 2. The Mayors Books and the Sheriffs' Books, which date, respectively, from the reign of Richard II. and Henry V. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the life of towns and cities in the medieval period, this book shows how medieval towns grew to become important centers of trade and liberty. Beginning with a look at the Roman Empire's urban legacy, the author delves into urban planning or lack thereof; the urban way of life; the church in the city; city government; urban crafts and urban trade, health, wealth, and welfare; and the city in history. Annotated primary documents like Domesday Book, sketches of street life, and descriptions of fairs and markets bring the period to life, and extended biographical sketches of towns, regions, and city-dwellers provide readers with valuable detail. In addition, 26 maps and illustrations, an annotated bibliography, glossary, and index round out the work. After a long decline in urban life following the fall of the Roman Empire, towns became centers of trade and of liberty during the medieval period. Here, the author describes how, as Europe stabilized after centuries of strife, commerce and the commercial class grew, and urban areas became an important source of revenue into royal coffers. Towns enjoyed various levels of autonomy, and always provided goods and services unavailable in rural areas. Hazards abounded in towns, though. Disease, fire, crime and other hazards raised mortality rates in urban environs. Designed as an introduction to life of towns and cities in the medieval period, eminent historian Norman Pounds brings to life the many pleasures, rewards, and dangers city-dwellers sought and avoided. Beginning with a look at the Roman Empire's urban legacy, Pounds delves into Urban Planning or lack thereof; The Urban Way of Life; The Church in the City; City Government; Urban Crafts and Urban Trade, Health, Wealth, and Welfare; and The City in History.

Book Maids and Mistresses Cousins and Queens

Download or read book Maids and Mistresses Cousins and Queens written by Susan Frye and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection of sixteen essays considers evidence for the varied forms of women's alliances in early modern England. It shows how women, prohibited from direct participation in the institutional structures that shaped the lives of men, constructed informal connections with other females for purposes of survival, advancement, and creativity. The essays presented here consider a variety of communities--formed among groups as diverse as serving women, vagrants, aristocrats, and authors--in order to study the historical traces of women's connections. "Alliance"--as understood by the essayists in this volume--does not preclude competition or antagonism, since the bonds among women were frequently determined by an opposition to other women. As shown here, the theorizing of women's connections, and the recovery of the historical evidence for these connections, can only add to our understanding of women's activities in early modern English society. Maids and Mistresses, Cousins and Queens is divided into four sections. The first two, "Alliances in the City" and "Alliances in the Household," examine the circumstances of women's communities in two primary sites for women of this place and time. The second two, "Materializing Communities" and "Emerging Alliances," fully study the aspirations that guided and transformed the courses of women's lives. All of these interdisciplinary essays, deftly combining literary and historical methods and materials, are informed by feminism, queer theory, and studies of class and race in the early modern period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chester Plays, Vol. 1 I took H as the base for my edition, because it seemed to offer the best text. Even if I should be wrong in my estimation of this ms., which I Shall endeavour to justify further on, H has nevertheless so many and such characteristic variations from B W 11, that its text will retain importance even for those who may prefer the group B W h as deviating less from the original form of the Chester Plays. Moreover, any other form I could have given to my edition, would have resembled closely Wright's publication, with the one difference, that even in the group B W h, not W the oldest, but B the youngest ms., seems to me the most trustworthy bearer of a common tradition.
