Book Chess Openings for Beginners

Download or read book Chess Openings for Beginners written by Edward Ernest Cunnington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chess Openings for Beginners The object of this unpretentious little work is to give the beginner a short sketch of the various ways, more or less tried and approved, of starting a game of chess. Except in a few cases of particular interest, the Opening has not been carried beyond the first six or seven moves on each side. Some of the Openings here given are very little practised at the present time; but they may, at any later time, be brought into favour again, there being a fashion in these as in other matters. A pleasant though unsystematic way of learning something of the Openings may be found in working out games by eminent players. Or, if a more complete course of instruction be desired, the reader may be recommended to consult Mr. James Mason's "Chess Openings," or "Chess Openings, Ancient and Modern," by Messrs. Freeborough and Ranken, the latter being the most complete English work on the subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Masters of the Chessboard

Download or read book Masters of the Chessboard written by Richard Reti and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2012-01-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Réti's "Other” Classic Ask most chessplayers about the works by Richard Réti, and most will quickly reply Modern Ideas in Chess. His Masters of the Chessboard will be a distant second and that is unfortunate, because in many ways Masters is more comprehensive and instructive than its better-known predecessor. He packs it with advice, even for beginners. Opening theory is a priority. Réti tells the student to understand "the basic idea” of each opening, and goes into considerable detail as he explains each of the popular lines of the day, including, of course, his own Réti Opening. Some of the finest parts of the book are the mini-essays, most of them on openings, but also on rook endgames. It's remarkable that Réti manages to do this without going into long variations. This practical approach is also evident when he deals with positional themes. For example, Masters can be appreciated as almost a primer on the subject of how to turn the two bishops into a significant advantage. As noted by American grandmaster Andy Soltis in his Foreword, this entire book is "wonderfully instructive.” And now it is available in a 21st-century edition, with figurine algebraic notation, with many diagrams and photos added.
