Book excerpt: Chess and the Law selectively surveys the many interesting and unusual ways that the game of chess has intersected with the practice of law in the United States. Written in an engaging narrative style, there are four types of entries: (1) accounts of chess-related crimes, lawsuits, and agency actions; (2) anecdotes about attorney- and judge-players of note; (3) comments on law journal articles that use chess as an analogy; and (4) chess-themed quotes and quips from judicial opinions. These pieces are interspersed, and loosely woven together in chapters, in a browsable book that is both informative and entertaining. Part true crime tale, part literary desk refernece for attorneys and judges who like to use chess quotes in their legal writing, Chess and Law is many things, beautifully blended together in a fun anthology that pulls off the trick of transforming into a page-turning tale of legal history, where it meets with chess history.

Book Essential Chess Sacrifices

Download or read book Essential Chess Sacrifices written by David LeMoir and published by Gambit Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacrifices are an essential part of chess. Those who never consider sacrificing will miss countless opportunities and find that promising positions repeatedly slip away. Players who do not appreciate their opponents' sacrificial possibilities will be unable to see danger signs, and find themselves on the wrong end of too many king-hunts. Rather than merely cataloguing the various possibilities and providing examples, LeMoir discusses the possible follow-ups to the sacrifices, the defensive options against them, and the positional factors that might suggest whether the sacrifice will be sound or unsound. There are many important types of chess positions that can only be played well by those who understand the thematic sacrifices that are possible.

Book Chess Problems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeremy Morse
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2016-02-18
  • ISBN : 178589143X
  • Pages : 496 pages

Download or read book Chess Problems written by Jeremy Morse and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is chess an art, a science or a sport? This is one of the most commonly asked questions about chess, but it admits of no easy answer. Most chess activities involve a combination of all three components, but different areas of chess emphasize different aspects. The sporting element predominates in the over-theboard game, while the protracted battles of postal chess stress the scientific side. The third element, the artistic component, finds its best expression in the field of chess composition. Over the- board players often ignore composed positions, or if they do pay attention, they concentrate on endgame compositions of direct relevance to practical play. In turning their backs on the world of chess problems, they are missing out on a great deal of enjoyment. It is true that studying chess problems will never improve anybody's play, but not everything has to have a strictly functional justification. The many fascinating examples which follow can give a great deal of pleasure to anyone interested in seeing the chess pieces stretched to their limits. This book will conduct the reader on a detailed tour around one part of the world of chess composition.

  • Author : David LeMoir
  • Publisher : Gambit Publications
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9781901983487
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book How to Be Lucky in Chess written by David LeMoir and published by Gambit Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some players seem to have an inexhaustible supply of chessboard luck. Like all players, they may get into trouble every now and then, but they somehow find a way to escape. Among world champions, Lasker, Tal and Kasparov especially excelled at peering into the abyss but making sure it was their opponents who fell. This book aims to help ordinary players, who may have little time for studying chess, to make the most of their abilities. Unlike most previous literature on chess psychology, this is no heavyweight theoretical treatise, but rather a practical guide in how to lure opponents into error - and thus create what is often called 'luck'.

Book Curious Chess Facts

    Book Details:
  • Author : Irving Chernev
  • Publisher : Ishi Press
  • Release : 2013-03
  • ISBN : 9784871875714
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book Curious Chess Facts written by Irving Chernev and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curious Chess Facts is Irving Chernev's first book. Published in 1937, it is his famous collection of chess anecdotes. The facts in this book are so famous that they have become part of chess lore, repeated thousands of times, published in countless books and magazine articles by many different authors, such that it is almost forgotten that this book is the original published source. Here are some examples: At a dinner somebody gave a toast to the World Chess Champion. Both Steinitz and Zukertort stood up. (They played a match to determine the real world champion. Steinitz won the match but Zukertort had finished three points ahead of him in London 1883.) This is Curious Chess Fact Number 197 in this book. One that I use that often helps me remember chess history is that Steinitz was World Champion for 28 years. His record was not quite equaled by Lasker who was world champion for 27 years. This is Curious Chess Fact Number 21. Since I remember that Lasker lost the world title to Capablanca in a match in 1921, I can calculate back to determine the year in which Lasker won the world championship by defeating Steinitz in a match. Then, going back another 28 years I can calculate the year that Steinitz defeated Adolf Anderssen who some consider to have been the first world chess champion. Another example is that Marshall won a famous game by a queen sacrifice that was so brilliant that the spectators showered the board with gold pieces. This is Curious Chess Fact Number 9. The moves of the game itself with the spectacular queen sacrifice are to be found in almost every anthology of famous chess games. The story that the spectators showered the board with gold pieces is always included with the moves. The list goes on any on. There are so many of them that you just have to read this book to see and recall them.
