Book Cheshire Life

Download or read book Cheshire Life written by Mike Eddison and published by . This book was released on 2007-07-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Above all else, the county of Cheshire has been shaped by its people. These fascinating archive photographs combine views of the county - from urban Macclesfield to the rustic fields of Barrow - with reminders of some of the people who have criss-crossed its landscape and left their mark: the salt worker in Northwich, the tanner in Runcorn and the coal miner in Poynton; eccentrics like Gawsworth's 'Maggoty Johnson' and celebrities such as Mrds Gaskell and the remarkable Cholmondeley sisters; and some of the county's less enviable inhabitants - the witches hanged at Chester, the unfortunate Edith Morrey, whose execution was delayed because of her pregnancy, and the folorn faces of the Stockport Theives' Book. All manner of Cheshire life is here. Whatever the image - photographs, print, document, map - all have a story to tell, from the Cheshire farmer 'unlucky in love' to the scribblings of a cheeky schoolboy, Manchester United relaxing in Sandiway to the airman battling his way to Australia in the 1930s or the day that chess Grandmaster Victor Korchnoi met his match in Chester. Librarian Mike Eddison and archivist John Hopkins (with more years of service at the Cheshire Record Office than they care to remember) have drawn extensively on photographs and Cheshire archives to illustrate many aspects of the county's past. With chapters on themes such as education, employment, health and welfare, sport, leisure and religion, Cheshire Life will appeal to those who know the area and offer a captivating introduction to the county for those who do not.

  • Author : Kate Simon

  • Release : 2018-06-08
  • ISBN : 1784770825
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Cheshire written by Kate Simon and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2018-06-08 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brand new title in Bradt's acclaimed UK regional Slow series is the only full guide to Cheshire, a county known for its abundance of black-and-white timbered buildings and which was put firmly on the map in the 1990s thanks to then-resident stars Posh and Becks. Cheshire is a county that confounds expectations, from the Cheshire Plain to the hills and moors of the Pennines and Peak District in the east and surprisingly dramatic sandstone ridges in the west, not to mention the Wirral Peninsula, flanked by the major estuaries of the Rivers Mersey and Dee flowing into the Irish Sea. Home to premier league footballers it may be, but it is also a largely rural landscape and an area of farm shops, forests and falconries; meres, marinas and marshes. There is industrial and scientific heritage, too, ranging from Bronze-Age mining sites to the internationally important astronomical observatory and mighty Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. With this new Bradt guide, discover all of this and more: the county town of Chester with its fascinating Roman history, unique double-decker medieval shopping arcades and the most complete city walls in Britain; ruins of ancient castles; and reminders of the salt and silk industries that have been so important in the past. For a truly slow experience, Cheshire also offers a network of canals, perfect for waterside strolls or pootling along in a narrowboat, while Bradt's Slow Cheshire details information for walkers and cyclists, too. Also included in this guide are gardens and parks, grand stately homes and structural legacies of the past (such as Port Sunlight), engaging museums, attractions and events. Local food and drink is covered, along with all types of accommodation, from farm stays and self-catering cottages to guesthouses and hotels.

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Cheshire written by Ron Gagliardi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-12-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheshire was established by farmers in 1694 as a parish of neighboring Wallingford. It is a classic New England town, built around a central green, graced by a white church with a tall, weather vane-topped, sentinel spire. Surrounded by some of the state's main highways of today, the town's location and people have shaped the long and rich history of this proud Connecticut community. Cheshire chronicles the growth of a small, Colonial farm town through the early twentieth century. The book is an album of its prominent citizens and families and of its noteworthy sites and events. Stories from two hundred years of its history come to life on its pages. They include the passage of the Amistad captives through Lock 12 on their way to stand trial in Hartford, the tale of the wandering Leatherman, and rumors of gold buried in the center of town. The book's centerpiece is a collection of the works of E.W. Hazard, early lensman, featuring his photography of Cheshire's parades, celebrations, and streetscapes, some seen here for the first time in print, in what may be the largest assemblage of his craft in one publication.

Download or read book Crossing Cheshire Bridge written by Teri Darnell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crossing Cheshire Bridge is an alluring look into the intimate relationship between the people who work, live and play on Cheshire Bridge Road and the places they traverse. These photographs trace a decade of unlikely connections bridged together by this infamous one-mile road. At first glance, the photographs might seem like an exploration of otherness within a seedy place that is censured by the surrounding affluent residential community and suburbs, but it is quite the opposite. The photographs reveal deep personal connections that provide a glimpse into their lives. Their untold stories open a door to countless insights of human behavior. Cheshire Bridge Road pre-dates the city of Atlanta. Cheshire Bridge Road was originally a farming corridor that attracted settlers in the early 1800's. It remained agricultural until the early 20th century, when suburban development and commerce moved into the area. By the 1970's, the more affluent residents began moving further from Atlanta, creating opportunities for low rent businesses. This iconic road is famous for having many adult entertainment establishments. Many of these places are known as Atlanta's Red Light District. Recently rediscovered, the road is an attractive infill location between Atlanta's two largest employment areas, Buckhead and Midtown. Businesses, where the same people have work for decades, are being destroyed to make way for high-end apartments and mixed-use properties. Sadly, Cheshire Bride Road is on the way to becoming gentrified.
