Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Cheshire, Connecticut: From 1694-1840 Including Prospect, Which, as Columbia Parish, Was a Part of Cheshire Until 1829 Few persons realize how much labor is involved in the prep aration of a work of this kind. The collection and selection of the material is Often the work of years. Many weary hours must be Spent in copying faded records and deciphering weather-worn grave stones. Names and dates must be ver ified, necessitating frequent journeys to other places to con sult reliable sources of information, all involving expense of time and money. Finally, good judgment must be used in separating the wheat from the chaff, and skill exercised in making the story clear and interesting. This is all the work of no lazy man. My father, the late Joseph P. Beach, the author of this his tory, was a pupil at the Episcopal Academy in Cheshire dur ing the years 1840 and 1841, and thus became interested in the town in his early years. Frequently, during his active busi ness life, he made vacation trips to the scene of these pleasant school days, thus refreshing his memory of faces and places connected with them. In 1869, when he retired from business, he became a per manent resident Of Cheshire, and from that time to the end Of his life much of his leisure time was occupied in genealogical and historical research. While gathering material for a paper to be read at the Centennial celebration Of the incorporation of the town of Cheshire, he became especially interested in the early history of the place. Download or read book Cheshire written by Ron Gagliardi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-12-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cheshire was established by farmers in 1694 as a parish of neighboring Wallingford. It is a classic New England town, built around a central green, graced by a white church with a tall, weather vane-topped, sentinel spire. Surrounded by some of the state's main highways of today, the town's location and people have shaped the long and rich history of this proud Connecticut community. Cheshire chronicles the growth of a small, Colonial farm town through the early twentieth century. The book is an album of its prominent citizens and families and of its noteworthy sites and events. Stories from two hundred years of its history come to life on its pages. They include the passage of the Amistad captives through Lock 12 on their way to stand trial in Hartford, the tale of the wandering Leatherman, and rumors of gold buried in the center of town. The book's centerpiece is a collection of the works of E.W. Hazard, early lensman, featuring his photography of Cheshire's parades, celebrations, and streetscapes, some seen here for the first time in print, in what may be the largest assemblage of his craft in one publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incisive, unflinching account of the shocking, summer 2007 Connecticut crime that is still making national headlines, Murder in Connecticut examines what happened to Dr. William Petit, his wife Jennifer Hawke-Petit, and their two daughters, Hayley and Michaela, in the early morning hours of July 23 in the quiet town of Cheshire--and how their community rallied bravely around the sole survivor of this vicious home invasion. Who was the Petit family? How were they marked for murder by their killers, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes? How could these men have dreamed up such a crime? And will these horrifying murders--with startling similarities to the case in Truman Capote's classic In Cold Blood--really be the impetus behind sweeping parole reform laws that will not only affect Connecticut, but all of America?
