Book excerpt: Despite its reputation as an Appalachian coal hauler, the Chesapeake & Ohio offered high-profile passenger service linking Norfolk and Washington, D.C. with Cincinnati and Louisville. In addition, C&O cars served Chicago via the New York Central and New York via the Pennsylvania Railroad. This outstanding color history documents C&O passenger cars and trains from 1945 to the emergence of Amtrak in 1970. A large portion of the story revolves around C&O's massive 1950 order of 300 Pullman can, but there is also coverage of The Sportsman service across Ohio to Detroit, and Michigan passenger services inherited from the Pere Marquette Railway, which was merged in 1947. With roster data, interior views, and detailed color imagery of C&O's vibrant yellow, blue, and silver livery, this resource is sure to appeal to C&O modelers and railfans alike.

Book Chesapeake Ohio Passenger Service 1847 1971

Download or read book Chesapeake Ohio Passenger Service 1847 1971 written by Thomas W. Dixon Jr and published by Chesapeake & Ohio Hist. Soc.. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by T. W. Dixon, Jr., details the whole history of passenger train service on the C&O. Beginning with the Virginia Central in the 1840s and ending with Amtrak's takeover in 1971, much of the information has never before been published. Especially during the 1920-1971 period, the era of the heavyweight steel passenger equipment and the lightweight streamlined cars, the heaviest and most powerful steam locomotives, and the iconic E8 diesels - a wealth of detail. Mail, express, dining car, sleeping car, and ancillary service are covered, as well as motive power, cars, schedules, consists, methods of operation, stations, staff/personnel, advertising, and all the elements that went to make the C&O's passenger trains not only highly efficient, greatly successful, widely known, and well respected. Though passengers accounted for only 5% of C&O's revenue in the mid-20th century era, the company lavished a great deal of attention on it. The feeling was that, to truly be a first class railway, C&O had to have the very best passenger service. Innovations starting in the 1880s and leading up into the 1950s, put C&O at the forefront of passenger service development from an operational and technological viewpoint. In the final decades C&O absorbed the passenger losses in the belief that the passenger train was the best advertising that it could have.

Book Baltimore Ohio s Capitol Limited and National Limited

Download or read book Baltimore Ohio s Capitol Limited and National Limited written by Joe Welsh and published by . This book was released on with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1923 the Baltimore & Ohio's Capitol Limited started its travels between Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. Two years later the B&O's National Limited linked the nations capital to St. Louis. Almost at once the two lines became household names, famous for the outstanding service and cuisine offered in their Pullman sleepers and renowned dining cars. This authoritative, illustrated history takes readers back to the B&O's glory years, with a wealth of images, route information, details of the trains passenger motive power, and the inside story on the frugal railroads means of streamlining its equipment with innovative and aesthetically striking results. Against a backdrop of dozens of black-and-white archival images and period color photos depicting uniforms, dinnerware, stations, period ads and route maps, and interior views of passenger cars, award-winning rail author Joe Welsh discusses how B&O passenger operations led to the demise of at least one of its rival Pennsylvania Railroads passenger trains; and how, ultimately, market forces did in the B&O's passenger trains as well. Here is the whole story, with the National Limited's failure under Amtrak's auspices--and the 1981 rebirth of the Capitol Limited as one of Amtrak's most popular trains, keeping a legend alive.
