Book Archaeology of the Central Mississippi Valley

Download or read book Archaeology of the Central Mississippi Valley written by Dan F. Morse and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeology of the Central Mississippi Valley describes an archeological reconstruction of the preceding 11,000 years of an extraordinarily rich environment centered within the largest river system north of the Amazon. This book focuses on the lowlands of the Mississippi Valley from just north of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Arkansas River. Organized into 13 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the territory between the Ohio and Arkansas rivers. This text then attempts to humanize the archeological interpretations by reference to social organization, settlement system, economy, religion, and politics. Other chapters focus on understanding the nature of change through time in the Central Mississippi Valley. This book discusses as well the difference between an old braided stream surface and the younger meander belt system. The final chapter deals with the investigation of prehistoric Indian remains. This book is a valuable resource for archeologists, zoologists, and scientific hobbyists.

Book excerpt: From the Seminole Wars to the Little Big Horn, the history of America's native peoples and their contacts with those seeking to settle or claim a new land has often been marked by violence. The sites of these conflicts, unlike many sites related to the American Revolution and the War Between the States, are often difficult to locate, and information on these battles is frequently sketchy or unclear. This reference work provides essential information on these sites. The arrangement is by state, with sections for Canada and Mexico. Each entry has information about how to find the site, tours, museums, and resources for further study. In addition, there is a chronological list of battles and other encounters between Indians and non-Indians, including dates, location in the text, and the larger conflict of which each battle was a part. There is an index of battle locations and an index of prominent people involved. The bibliography and site listings are cross-referenced for further research.

Book History of Cherry Valley Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Cherry Valley Classic Reprint written by John Sawyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Cherry Valley No village in the United States has had so remark able a history as Cherry Valley; nor has any played so important a part in all the various epochs of the country's history. Indeed it may be said that a care ful student might trace through it the life of the country. With all its varied changes: the hardships and struggles of the colonial times; the sufferings and agonies of the revolutionary period; the trials and toils of an impoverished people commencing life over again in the infant republic; the beginning of the emigration from New England and its gradual increase until it became almost a universal exodus from the older states of the east to the new territories of the west; the building up of the villages on the great routes of this travel until they rivalled in their wealth and influence the old commercial towns of New England and eastern New York; their gradual decline through the building of the canals and rail roads, which diverted from them their great sources of revenue; and following this the final destruction of their prosperity and influence by the loss of their young men, who have, in recent years, so generally sought the growing country to the west, or the large cities in the east, as offering greater opportunities for advancement. It is not, however, the fact that Cherry Valley played a part in all of these variousepochs that makes its history remarkable, but that it played so important a part, and presents in so marked a manner the importance of the country vil lage in the early life of the country and its great decadence in later times. For, passing by its colon ial history, when as the home of the first English church and the first classical school west of the Hud son, and by reason of the prominent part it per formed in the revolution, it was recognized as the leading settlement west of Schenectady, we find it for forty years after the close of that war the leading commercial center and for half a century the wealth iest and most influential village in the state west of the Hudson. But more remarkable still, although its population during this time never exceeded one thousand people, it was the home of a greater num ber of men of prominence and ability and of more skilled mechanics than any other place in the state, excepting only New York.
