Book Signs of Cherokee Culture

Download or read book Signs of Cherokee Culture written by Margaret Bender and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive fieldwork in the community of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina, this book uses a semiotic approach to investigate the historic and contemporary role of the Sequoyan syllabary--the written system for representing the sounds of the Cherokee language--in Eastern Cherokee life. The Cherokee syllabary was invented in the 1820s by the respected Cherokee Sequoyah. The syllabary quickly replaced alternative writing systems for Cherokee and was reportedly in widespread use by the mid-nineteenth century. After that, literacy in Cherokee declined, except in specialized religious contexts. But as Bender shows, recent interest in cultural revitalization among the Cherokees has increased the use of the syllabary in education, publications, and even signage. Bender also explores the role played by the syllabary within the ever more important context of tourism. (The Eastern Cherokee Band hosts millions of visitors each year in the Great Smoky Mountains.) English is the predominant language used in the Cherokee community, but Bender shows how the syllabary is used in special and subtle ways that help to shape a shared cultural and linguistic identity among the Cherokees. Signs of Cherokee Culture thus makes an important contribution to the ethnographic literature on culturally specific literacies.

Book Four Gospels and selected Psalms in Cherokee

Download or read book Four Gospels and selected Psalms in Cherokee written by Ruth Bradley Holmes and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Four Gospels and Selected Psalms in Cherokee is a companion to the Cherokee syllabary New Testament. Written by Sequoyah in the nineteenth century, the syllabary New Testament is the largest complex text composed in Cherokee by a truly fluent speaker with an easy command of the language. Here for the first time the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are presented in Cherokee using the English alphabet. With line breaks that follow exactly those in the syllabary New Testament, this book serves as an aid for readers seeking to deepen their understanding of the Cherokee Bible. In her introduction to the Gospels, Ruth Bradley Holmes offers a history of the Cherokee New Testament, a detailed look both at the Cherokee syllabary and at the process of transliterating a Cherokee text into the English alphabet, and information on tones, vowel length, and other intricacies of the Cherokee language. Also included is the Lord’s Prayer. This prayer is presented first in English, then in the Cherokee syllabary, and finally in Cherokee using the English alphabet. It is accompanied by an analysis of the language structure and word definitions within the prayer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book of the Old Testament, translated and published in 1854. Our large-print version is a faithful digitization of the 1856 edition, with each verse presented in old syllabary, new syllabary, phonetic, and English (King James Version). Also included are 19th century illustrations by the French artist Gustave Doré. The first portion of the Bible to be translated into Cherokee was the Gospel of John, Chapter 3, by John Arch in 1824. Since then, many portions of the Bible have been translated, by such scholars as Rev. Samuel Worcester, Elias Boudinot, George Lowery, David Brown, and in the 20th century by Jack and Anna Kilpatrick. The Cherokee Bible embodies the highest and most elegant version of the language, equivalent to the English of the King James Bible. The Cherokee Bible Project releases this edition in the prayerful hope that it encourages study and use of the Cherokee language.
