The author fictionalized the stories that her mother told her about her family’s life. The Kamensky family flees the destruction and wreckage they suffered in Kovno, Lithuania, to emigrate to the United States. Each child in the family grows up in the New World following different paths. History is incorporated in the story of their lives. Moishe changes his name to Morris and goes on to become a millionaire. He marries Annette, the last child of sixteen siblings, who has been raised by wealthy adoptive parents who rescued her from poverty. Morris loses his fortune in the Great Depression. His life comes to an end quite unexpectedly in a tragic way. Ida changes her name to Ada and remains an ‘old maid’ until Ben comes along. She gives birth to Reva and lives until the age of 104.

Book Cultivating a Good Family Heritage

Download or read book Cultivating a Good Family Heritage written by Armand Tiffe and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What kind of family heritage are you passing down to your children? If it is only money, land, or some other material possession, it falls too short for a Christian family. God desires that we leave something more--a rich legacy consisting of close family ties, cherished memories, and biblical values. Based on what our heavenly Father has modeled for us, Armand and Kathy Tiffe emphasize three essential elements for cultivating a good, solid family heritage your children will carry into adulthood and fondly look back on. Cultivating a Good Family Heritage offers concrete, practical ways of implementing these three elements into your family life. It will especially be pertinent for parents of pre-school children through early-teen-years.

This book was released on 2021-02-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology reflects on heritage, utopia, and questions of temporality in light of recent changes in the Americas, that is to say the rise to power of several right-wing governments. The essays argue that the focus of analysis should not simply be on changes of government, but rather on long-term transformations which have an impact on temporal imaginaries in the hemisphere.

Book excerpt: Historic sites, memorials, national parks, museumsewe live in an age in which heritage is ever-present. But what does it mean to live amongst the spectral traces of the past, the heterogeneous piling up of historic materials in the present? How did heritage grow from the concern of a handful of enthusiasts and specialists in one part of the world to something which is considered to be universally cherished? And what concepts and approaches are necessary to understanding this global obsession? Over the decades, since the adoption of the World Heritage Convention, various e~crisese(tm) of definition have significantly influenced the ways in which heritage is classified, perceived and managed in contemporary global societies. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to the many tangible and intangible e~thingse(tm) now defined as heritage, this book attempts simultaneously to account for this global phenomenon and the industry which has grown up around it, as well as to develop a e~toolkit of conceptse(tm) with which it might be studied. In doing so, it provides a critical account of the emergence of heritage studies as an interdisciplinary field of academic study. This is presented as part of a broader examination of the function of heritage in late modern societies, with a particular focus on the changes which have resulted from the globalisation of heritage during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Developing new theoretical approaches and innovative models for more dialogically democratic heritage decision making processes, Heritage: Critical Approaches unravels the relationship between heritage and the experience of late modernity, whilst reorienting heritage so that it might be more productively connected with other pressing social, economic, political and environmental issues of our time.

Book The Cherished Five in Sikh History

Download or read book The Cherished Five in Sikh History written by Louis E. Fenech and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the 30th of March, 1699, the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh called together a special assembly at the Keshgarh Fort at Anandpur. Following the morning devotions, the Guru asked for a volunteer, saying, "The entire sangat is very dear to me; but is there a devoted Sikh who will give his head to me here and now? A need has arisen at this moment which calls for a head." One man arose and followed the Guru out of the room. When the Guru returned to the assembly with a bloodied sword, he asked for another volunteer. Another man followed. This was repeated three more times, until at last the Guru emerged with a clean sword and all five men alive and well. Those five volunteers would become the first disciples of the Khalsa, the martial community within the Sikh religion, and would come to be known as the Panj Piare, or the Cherished Five. Despite the centrality of this group to modern Sikhism, scholarship on the Panj Piare has remained sparse. Louis Fenech's new book examines the Khalsa and the role that the the Panj Piare have had in the development of the Sikh faith over the past three centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth and nothing but the truth—Richard Shenkman sheds light on America's most believed legends. The story of Columbus discovering the world was round was invented by Washington Irving. The pilgrims never lived in log cabins. In Concord, Massachusetts, a third of all babies born in the twenty years before the Revolution were conceived out of wedlock. Washington may have never told a lie, but he loved to drink and dance, and he fell in love with his best friend's wife. Independence wasn't declared on July 4th. There's no evidence that anyone died in a frontier shootout at high noon. After World War II, the U.S. government concluded that Japan would have surrendered within months, even if we had not bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Book Loving Literature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Deidre Shauna Lynch
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2014-12-22
  • ISBN : 022618384X
  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Loving Literature written by Deidre Shauna Lynch and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most common—and wounding—misconceptions about literary scholars today is that they simply don’t love books. While those actually working in literary studies can easily refute this claim, such a response risks obscuring a more fundamental question: why should they? That question led Deidre Shauna Lynch into the historical and cultural investigation of Loving Literature. How did it come to be that professional literary scholars are expected not just to study, but to love literature, and to inculcate that love in generations of students? What Lynch discovers is that books, and the attachments we form to them, have played a vital role in the formation of private life—that the love of literature, in other words, is deeply embedded in the history of literature. Yet at the same time, our love is neither self-evident nor ahistorical: our views of books as objects of affection have clear roots in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century publishing, reading habits, and domestic history. While never denying the very real feelings that warm our relationship to books, Loving Literature nonetheless serves as a riposte to those who use the phrase “the love of literature” as if its meaning were transparent. Lynch writes, “It is as if those on the side of love of literature had forgotten what literary texts themselves say about love’s edginess and complexities.” With this masterly volume, Lynch restores those edges and allows us to revel in those complexities.
