Download or read book Plant Carbohydrates I written by F.A. Loewus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential features of constitution, configuration, and conformation in carbo hydrate chemistry, so well established in the . first half of this century, had yet to be exploited by those concerned with biochemical and physiological processes in plants when the original Encyclopedia appeared. Two outstanding developments, discovery of sugar nucleotides and the advent of chromatography, brought together the insight and a means of probing complexities inherent in plant carbohydrates. These advances, combined with a modern knowledge of enzymes and cellular metabolism, have provided new horizons of investigation for the student of plant physiology. This volume and its companion (Vol. 13B) present a comprehensive assess ment of the current viewpoint in plant carbohydrates with emphasis on those aspects which impinge on physiological processes of growth and development. To accommodate the extensive amount of information to be presented, subject matter has been divided, somewhat arbitrarily, into intracellular and extracellular carbohydrates, with the latter defined as carbohydrates occurring in space out side the plasma membrane (plasmalemma). This classification is not exclusive; rather it is intended to lend a degree of flexibility to the way in which subject matter is arranged between volumes. The first section of this volume addresses the occurrence, metabolism, and function of monomeric and higher saccharides of fungi, algae, and higher plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, 24 flowering plant families comprising a total of 911 genera are treated. They represent the asterid order Lamiales except for Acanthaceae (including Avicenniaceae), which will be included in a later volume. Although most of the constituent families of the order have been recognized as being closely related long ago, the inclusion of the families Byblidaceae, Carlemanniaceae and Plocospermataceae is the result mainly of recent molecular systematic research. Keys for the identification of all genera are provided, and likely phylogenetic relationships are discussed extensively. To facilitate the recognition of relationships, families are cross-referenced where necessary. The wealth of information contained in this volume makes it an indispensable source for anybody in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences.

Book Anti Fertility Plants of the Pacific

Download or read book Anti Fertility Plants of the Pacific written by RC Cambie and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing appreciation of traditional medical systems as a source of considerable knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants. Traditional medicines have the potential to offer leads to identifying potentially valuable chemicals that can be developed into new and more effective drugs, including safer contraceptives. The Pacific region is an excellent arena in which to search for such chemicals as: the area contains plant species not found elsewhere; there is every indication that many of the plants used more generally in traditional Pacific medicine may be efficacious – of 74 plants surveyed in one study 86% showed pharmacological activity; and in many Pacific traditions, knowledge of medicinal use is transmitted between generations as part of an inherited body of ethnomedical knowledge. This book documents all the available information on plants that have been used traditionally for anti-fertility and fertility purposes in the Pacific region, and indicates which of these plants hold the most promise for providing new anti-fertility agents. It also records instances in which the plant has been used outside the region.

Book Trease and Evans Pharmacognosy

Download or read book Trease and Evans Pharmacognosy written by William Charles Evans and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 3322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encyclopedic reference work on pharmacognosy covers the study of those natural substances, principally plants, that find a use in medicine. Its popularity and longevity stem from the book's balance between classical (crude and powdered drugs' characterization and examination) and modern (phytochemistry and pharmacology) aspects of this branch of science, as well as the editor's recognition in recent years of the growing importance of complementary medicines, including herbal, homeopathic and aromatherapy. No other book provides such a wealth of detail. A reservoir of knowledge in a field where there is a resurgence of interest - plants as a source of drugs are of growing interest both in complementary medicine fields and in the pharmaceutical industry in their search for new 'lead compounds'. Dr Evans has been associated with the book for over 20 years and is a recognised authority in all parts of the world where pharmacognosy is studied, his knowledge and grasp of the subject matter is unique. Meticulously referenced and kept up to date by the editor, new contributors brought in to cover new areas. New chapter on 'Neuroceuticals'. Addition of many new compounds recently added to British Pharmacopoeia as a result of European harmonisation. Considers development in legal control and standardisation of plant materials previously regarded as 'herbal medicines'. More on the study of safety and efficacy of Chinese and Asian drugs. Quality control issues updated in line with latest guidelines (BP 2007).

Book The Mangoes

Download or read book The Mangoes written by A.J.G.H. Kostermans and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mangoes: Their Botany, Nomenclature, Horticulture and Utilization provides a comprehensive discussion of existing mango species and their value in the common mango (Mangifera indica) industry. It covers mango species growing in very dry areas, like savannahs; species growing on inundated lands; at altitudes over 1000 m in the tropics and at higher latitudes outside the tropics; under monsoon climate conditions and under constantly wet conditions; and so-called wild species that compete in flavor with the common mango. The book begins with an overview of the genus Mangifera, covering distribution, ecology, morphology, and development. The remaining chapters discuss the phytochemistry and chemotaxonomy of the Anacardiaceae with special emphasis on Mangifera; conservation of Mangifera species; a historical overview of the development of knowledge of Mangifera; subdivision of the genus; species of uncertain position; and excluded species. The book also includes a list of references along with indexes to scientific names, vernacular names, and collection numbers. The present text was written for horticulturists and mango growers. However, it may also be useful to scientific botanists, ecologists, students, and teachers.
