Book excerpt: Chemical reactions at high pressures are widely used in modern technology (supercritical extraction is an example). On the other hand, critical phenomena is the more advanced field in statistical mechanics. There are thousands of theoretical and experimental articles published by physicists, chemists, biologists, chemical engineers and material scientists, but, to our knowledge, there are no books which link these two phenomena together. This book sums up the results of 222 published articles, both theoretical and experimental, which will be of great benefit to students and all researchers working in this field.

Book Stochastic Processes in Physics Chemistry and Biology

Download or read book Stochastic Processes in Physics Chemistry and Biology written by Jan A. Freund and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of stochastic processes originally grew out of efforts to describe Brownian motion quantitatively. Today it provides a huge arsenal of methods suitable for analyzing the influence of noise on a wide range of systems. The credit for acquiring all the deep insights and powerful methods is due ma- ly to a handful of physicists and mathematicians: Einstein, Smoluchowski, Langevin, Wiener, Stratonovich, etc. Hence it is no surprise that until - cently the bulk of basic and applied stochastic research was devoted to purely mathematical and physical questions. However, in the last decade we have witnessed an enormous growth of results achieved in other sciences - especially chemistry and biology - based on applying methods of stochastic processes. One reason for this stochastics boom may be that the realization that noise plays a constructive rather than the expected deteriorating role has spread to communities beyond physics. Besides their aesthetic appeal these noise-induced, noise-supported or noise-enhanced effects sometimes offer an explanation for so far open pr- lems (information transmission in the nervous system and information p- cessing in the brain, processes at the cell level, enzymatic reactions, etc.). They may also pave the way to novel technological applications (noise-- hanced reaction rates, noise-induced transport and separation on the na- scale, etc.). Key words to be mentioned in this context are stochastic r- onance, Brownian motors or ratchets, and noise-supported phenomena in excitable systems.

Book Physics and Chemistry of Photochromic Glasses

Download or read book Physics and Chemistry of Photochromic Glasses written by Alexander V. Dotsenko and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photochromic glasses are among the most widespread types of glasses, due largely to their popular use in sunglasses. These glasses are used not only in sunglasses, but also in various opto-electronic devices that have been developed and produced throughout the world. Physics and Chemistry of Photochromic Glasses brings together the combined knowledge and understanding of photochromic glasses from these publications. Coverage includes the structure, optical properties, coloration and bleaching mechanisms, technology, and metrology of these interesting materials.

Book Reducing Chemistry to Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hinne Hettema
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2012-08-24
  • ISBN : 9781475120912
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Reducing Chemistry to Physics written by Hinne Hettema and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and physics are two sciences that are hard to connect. Yet there is significant overlap in their aims, methods, and theoretical approaches. In this book, the reduction of chemistry to physics is defended from the viewpoint of a naturalised Nagelian reduction, which is based on a close reading of Nagel's original text. This naturalised notion of reduction is capable of characterising the inter-theory relationships between theories of chemistry and theories of physics. The reconsideration of reduction also leads to a new characterisation of chemical theories. This book is primarily aimed at philosophers of chemistry and chemists with an interest in philosophy, but is also of interest to the general philosopher of science.
