Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials have the potential to be the centrepiece for the transition to viable renewable energy technologies if they realise a specific suite of properties and achieve a desired set of performance metrics. The envisioned transition involves the discovery of materials that enable generation, conversion, storage, transmission, and utilization of renewable energy. This book presents, through the eye of materials chemistry, an umbrella view of the myriad of classes of materials that make renewable energy technologies work. They are poised to facilitate the transition of non-renewable and unsustainable energy systems of the past into renewable and sustainable energy systems of the future. It is a story that often begins in chemistry laboratories with the discovery of new energy materials. Yet, to displace materials in existing energy technologies with new ones, depends not only on the ability to design and engineer a superior set of performance metrics for the material and the technology but also the requirement to meet a demanding collection of economic, regulatory, social, policy, environmental and sustainability criteria. Disruption in the traditional way of discovering materials is coming with the emergence of artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic automation designed to accelerate the well-established discovery process, massive libraries of materials can be evaluated and the possibilities are endless. This book provides a perspective on the application of these new technologies to this field as well as an overview of energy materials discovery in the broader techno-economic and social context. Any budding researcher or more experienced materials scientist will find a guide to a fascinating story of discovery and emerge with a vision of what is next.

Book excerpt: "The fundamental theory behind materials science includes concerning the microstructure of a material to its macromolecular physical and chemical properties. The development of new materials to address pressing future needs is one of the biggest challenges of the 21st Century. These new materials will play a key role in shaping the future. Among other things, they will have to provide pathways for sustainable resource management and energy supply, mobility, the future viability of the consumer society and new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the healthcare sector. A deeper understanding of materials and their chemical make-up, architecture, functionalization, processing and potential applications creates the foundation which the manufacturing and process industry needs to remain competitive. Chemistry plays a predominant role in materials science because chemistry provides information about the structure and composition of materials, as well as the processes to synthesize and use them. By understanding and then altering the microstructure, material scientists adapt the properties to create custom, or even brand new, materials with specific properties for specific uses. It describes how individual substances interact and studies their stability and reactivity. To optimize material properties, researchers need an in-depth understanding of material structure and composition including how additives work, along with much more. Experience in chemistry is also needed in order to understand how to optimize the functions and quality of materials production, processing and applications, and it makes an important contribution to materials science all along the value-added chain. Chemistry of New Materials outlines the contribution made by chemistry to materials science in meeting a variety of needs. It summarizes the development potential and research needs over the next ten years. It focuses on the use of chemistry for the design and synthesis of materials with interesting or potentially useful physical characteristics, such as magnetic, optical, structural or catalytic properties. It also involves the characterization, processing and molecular-level understanding of these substances. The role of chemistry goes beyond the synthesis of new materials, materials development and optimization for specific applications. It also makes a major contribution to material re-use and the substitution of critical materials."

Book The Chemistry of Materials for the Management and Interconversion of Energy

Download or read book The Chemistry of Materials for the Management and Interconversion of Energy written by Rachael Matthews and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "energy crisis" is a phrase that has lost meaning to its sense of urgency as it is used time and again, but meantime the planet slowly approaches its demise. Global warming is a significant result of the increase in human activity and consumption of fossil fuels that have toxic consequences. Luckily, scientists and engineers across the world are driving forward future generations of technologies by tirelessly working to harvest energy from motion, light, and heat, and store this energy so that it is available on demand. Many devices are capable of converting different forms of energy to electricity. The components of these devices are made up of inorganic and organic materials, or hybrids thereof, that have been carefully designed and optimized to meet metrics of success for the desired application. The performance of energy management devices is not solely dependent on chemical design of the materials, but these materials should ideally be nontoxic, flexible, light weight, and multifunctional for optimal lifetime performance and durability; otherwise, efforts to address new devices and materials proves insufficient. This thesis describes the use of fundamental chemistry for accessing and understanding new materials and their properties. The work described herein covers the self-assembly of small molecules into tailored structures, provides insight into the design and preparation of new organic materials, and illustrates the use of organic modifiers to improve the performance properties of inorganic thin films.

Book New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences

Download or read book New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2001 National Research Council (NRC) report Basic Research Opportunities in Earth Science (BROES) described how basic research in the Earth sciences serves five national imperatives: (1) discovery, use, and conservation of natural resources; (2) characterization and mitigation of natural hazards; (3) geotechnical support of commercial and infrastructure development; (4) stewardship of the environment; and (5) terrestrial surveillance for global security and national defense. This perspective is even more pressing today, and will persist into the future, with ever-growing emphasis. Today's world-with headlines dominated by issues involving fossil fuel and water resources, earthquake and tsunami disasters claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damages, profound environmental changes associated with the evolving climate system, and nuclear weapons proliferation and testing-has many urgent societal issues that need to be informed by sound understanding of the Earth sciences. A national strategy to sustain basic research and training of expertise across the full spectrum of the Earth sciences is motivated by these national imperatives. New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences identifies new and emerging research opportunities in the Earth sciences over the next decade, including surface and deep Earth processes and interdisciplinary research with fields such as ocean and atmospheric sciences, biology, engineering, computer science, and social and behavioral sciences. The report also identifies key instrumentation and facilities needed to support these new and emerging research opportunities. The report describes opportunities for increased cooperation in these new and emerging areas between EAR and other government agency programs, industry, and international programs, and suggests new ways that EAR can help train the next generation of Earth scientists, support young investigators, and increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the field.
