Book Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials

Download or read book Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials written by Joachim Maier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the physical chemistry of charge carriers in the second edition of this popular textbook Ionic and electronic charge carriers are critical to the kinetic and electrochemical properties of ionic solids. These charge carriers are point defects and are decisive for electrical conductivity, mass transport, and storage phenomena. Generally, defects are deviations from the perfect structure, and if higher-dimensional, also crucial for the mechanical properties. The study of materials science and energy research therefore requires a thorough understanding of defects, in particular the charged point defects, their mobilities, and formation mechanisms. Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials is a comprehensive introduction to these charge carrier particles and the processes that produce, move, and activate them. Covering both core principles and practical applications, it discusses subjects ranging from chemical bonding and thermodynamics to solid-state kinetics and electrochemical techniques. Now in an updated edition with numerous added features, it promises to be the essential textbook on this subject for a new generation of materials scientists. Readers of the 2nd Edition of Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials will also find: Two new chapters on solid state electrochemistry and another on nanoionics Novel brief sections on photoelectrochemistry, bioelectrochemistry, and atomistic modelling put the treatment into a broader context Discussion of the working principles required to understand electrochemical devices like sensors, batteries, and fuel cells Real laboratory measurements to ground basic principles in practical experimentation Physical Chemistry of Ionic Materials is a valuable reference for chemists, physicists, and any working researchers or advanced students in the materials sciences.

Book Supercarbon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susumu Yoshimura
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 3662035693
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Supercarbon written by Susumu Yoshimura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The information revolution of the twentieth century was brought about by microelectronics based on a simple and common material, silicon. Although silicon will continue to be of central importance in the next century, carbon, silicon's upstairs neighbor in the periodic table, will also be of great impor tance in future technology. Carbon has more flexible bonding and hence has various unique physical, chemical and biological properties. It has two types of bonding, sp3 and sp2, in diamond and graphite, respectively. The existence of the latter, "7r-electron bonding" , is responsible for carbon's versatile tal ents. Those materials having extended 7r-electron clouds are called '7r-electron materials'. They include graphite, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes and various carbonaceous materials. They may be called "supercarbon" because of their fabulous multiformity and versatile properties. This volume is a status report on the synthesis, properties and appli cations of 7r-electron materials, representing an updated proceedings of the International Workshop on 7r-Electron Materials held at the Northwestern University,'Evanston, Illinois, USA, August 13-14,1996. The Workshop was organized jointly by the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST) and the Materials Research Center at the Northwestern University (NWU) in order to provide an opportunity for scientists and engineers to meet and dis cuss the latest advances in this field and in commemoration of the Yoshimura 7r-Electron Materials Project, one of Japan's national projects in the JST's ERATO (Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology) program.

Book excerpt: Of the five senses, smell is the most direct and food aromas are the key drivers of our flavor experience. They are crucial for the synergy of food and drinks. Up to 80% of what we call taste is actually aroma. Food Aroma Evolution: During Food Processing, Cooking, and Aging focuses on the description of the aroma evolution in several food matrices. Not only cooking, but also processing (such as fermentation) and aging are responsible for food aroma evolution. A comprehensive evaluation of foods requires that analytical techniques keep pace with the available technology. As a result, a major objective in the chemistry of food aroma is concerned with the application and continual development of analytical methods. This particularly important aspect is discussed in depth in a dedicated section of the book. Features Covers aromatic evolution of food as it is affected by treatment Focuses on food processing, cooking, and aging Describes both classic and new analytical techniques Explains how the flavor perception results are influenced by other food constituents The book comprises a good mix of referenced research with practical applications, also reporting case studies of these various applications of novel technologies. This text represents a comprehensive reference book for students, educators, researchers, food processors, and food industry personnel providing an up-to-date insight. Book Chemistry and Technology of Plant Substances

Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Plant Substances written by Alexander V. Kutchin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry and Technology of Plant Substances: Chemical and Biochemical Aspects demonstrates the progress and promise of developing new chemical substances from renewable sources of chemical raw materials. The volume brings together new achievements in the field of research and processing of plant raw materials and the synthesis of natural compounds for the production of biologically active substances and drugs. The volume looks closely at the rational use of renewable raw materials, which is the source of new compounds and intermediates for the chemical industry. It covers a wide range of problems associated with the use of the components of plants to produce new substances with a wide variety of purposes. According to the latest estimates, plants form about a million chemical substances. In some cases, plant products have pharmacological or biological activity that can be of therapeutic benefit in treating diseases. In addition, due to the structural diversity of plant material, chemical synthesis is easily reachable. Synthetic analogs of natural products with improved potency and safety can be prepared by chemical synthesis. Such synthetic analogs are safer for humans. Plant materials are often used as starting points for drug discovery. Chemistry and Technology of Plant Substances: Chemical and Biochemical Aspects presents the theoretical trends and recent practical achievements on complex processing of plant-based raw materials. Low molecular weight components, isolated from plant material, are widely used in fine organic synthesis. High molecular weight polysaccharides of conifers and other greens, such as pectin and hemicellulose, are the basis for the creation of anticoagulants and other drugs. The range of research papers presented in the book is quite wide: from fundamental and applied problems of wood chemistry and organic synthesis to biological activity of natural compounds. The book provides valuable information for those skilled in organic chemistry, chemical engineers, researchers and scientists as well as for faculty and upper-level students. This volume, Chemistry and Technology of Plant Substances: Chemical and Biochemical Aspects, was created on the initiative of Emanuel Institute of Biochemical Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) and the Institute of Chemistry of Komi Scientific Center of Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Syktyvkar).
