Book Chemistry in the Service of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chemistry in the Service of Man Classic Reprint written by Alexander Findlay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry in the Service of Man But the end and aim of chemistry is not merely material. Chemistry offers its contribution also to the deeper interests of the human mind. Occupied as he is with the study of material substances and of the marvellous transformations which he is able to bring about in them, the thinking chemist is forced to look below the surface of things and to seek an answer to the fundamental questions relating to the ultimate constitution and structure of matter, and to the forces which govern the changes and transformations which he observes in his laboratory, or which are wrought out in the larger laboratory of Nature. The study, not merely of the products but also of the principles and laws underlying the processes of chemical change, forms the work of the modern chemist. 'in its wider sweep, chemistry ignores the conventional and artificial frontiers which mark it off from the other branches of science, more especially physics; and in the last quarter of a century there has been no more fruitful region of experimental and speculative activity than that common territory where the sciences of chemistry and physics overlap. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Chemistry in the Service of the Sciences Professor van 't Hoff most cordially consented, not only thus to visit the United States as one of the guests of the University, but also, at the special request of the Department of Chemistry, to deliver a course of lectures on that branch of chemistry which Owes so large a Share Of its recent develop ment to his brilliant and profound investigations. The lectures were delivered in English, and, in Slightly condensed form, are reproduced in this volume. The interest which they aroused was most gratifying both to the lecturer and to his hosts. They were attended by large audiences, which included professors of chemistry and related sciences from many distant states of the Union. Those who had the privilege Of hearing them will not soon forget the genial personality of the speaker, the Simple and lucid language, and the suggestive treatment which combined to make them memorable. The excellent portrait, a reproduction of which forms the frontispiece, will give added interest to the book. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Vol. 9: 1916 Numerous writers and Speakers have called frequent attention to the great service which chemistry has rendered to humanity. In every field of industry she has been active, every product of man's labor has felt her magic touch. Modern civilization can be meas ured most accurately by considering the influence which chemistry has had upon industry and industrial operations. It is unnecessary here to tell what she has done. We are more concerned with the future than with the past, and judging the future by the past, the benefits which chemistry during the coming years will confer upon humanity will be infinitely valuable. On us, her votaries, is imposed the task of laying out the course of her progress, preparing and making the way easy for her and heralding her triumphant march. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate how this may best be done. It should be perfectly obvious that the purpose of all industry is to satisfy the desires of human beings. This is as true of chemical industry as it is of any other industry. The chemist renders human service. He is a human being himself and his service to human beings makes him a part of a great democratic commonwealth in which every member is a factor in the development of the whole. The Chemist is only a fraction in this commonwealth but the more he is organically a part of it the greater is his power of service. Like everyone else he does not exist by himself alone but is depend ent for his existence upon every other human being that is a part of the social organism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyman's Chemistry: The Chemist's Point of View and His Recent Work Told for the Layman Chemistry would be the dullest study on earth if it only had to do with the proportionate amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, etc., that a body contains. This is merely the genealogy of things, and bears the same relation to them that the names Of a man's several grandparents do to him. The interest lies in what these things will do, just as the interesting quality of a man lies in the problem of what he will do under more or less known conditions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Chemistry The authors have had exceptional opportunities to know the capacity of the average student and the train ing of the average teacher of science in secondary schools. They are fully aware of the limitations of these schools both as to laboratory equipment and as to the time which may reasonably be expected for the study of Chemistry. They have prepared the book with these limitations constantly in mind. A connected treatment of the descriptive matter of this work is attained by the division of the book into three parts: (1) the text proper; (2) the laboratory exercises the handbook. The text and the labora tory exercises are bound together; the handbook is in pamphlet form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Smith s Intermediate Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Smith s Intermediate Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Alexander Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smith's Intermediate Chemistry This is not said to the disparagement of other studies. They all have their peculiar merits which their professors are at liberty to demonstrate. But chemistry has the advantage of most of them in that it points toward the future and instigates to action. The study of the history Of man as written in books and of the history of the earth as recorded in rocks gives one a sad sense of irreparableness. What they deal with is dead and gone and all that is left is their lesson which may or may not be applicable to present problems. Meteorology is a discouraging science. People are always complaining about the weather but nobody ever does anything about it. Astronomy reduces one to a state of impotent awe. It is interesting of course to find out the struc ture of the solar system, but if you do not like it you cannot change it. You cannot put Saturn in the place of Venus so as to get a brighter evening star with two rings and eight satellites running around it. You cannot even alter the inclination Of the axis of the earth so as to give the polar regions a chance to grow bananas. But when you find out the structure of a chemical molecule you can alter it to suit yourself. You can substitute a bromine for a chlorine atom and hook 'up a carbon chain into a ring. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Chemistry The quantity of matter of a body is, then, determined by its quantity of inertia; and two bodies are said to have equal quantities of matter, when they have equal inertia. If the quantity of matter in one body is said to be twice the quantity of matter in another, the meaning is, that one has twice the inertia of the other or, that to give it the same motion will require twice the de gree of impelling force.* The mass of matter, or the mass of a body, is also a term of frequent use. This word mass is to be understood as synonymous with quan tity the mass of a body is, therefore, the quantity of matter in the body. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry While we do not undervalue the usefulness of a correct language to express the facts and theories of a Science, we have the strongest objection to frequent and capricious changes, in which the good is uncertain and prospective, while the evil is certain and immediate. Chemistry is not the Science of one nation, of one profession, or of one section of chemists. Among civilized nations it has now a com munity of language, and by this language, it is more closely linked to Arts, Manufactures, and Medicine, than any other branch of knowledge; hence, changes, to be useful, should be such as are re quired by urgent necessity, and are likely to command general acceptance by their reasonableness and expediency. After all, it must be remembered that these changes are not in the facts, but in a supposed improvement in the mode of expressing them; and if only partially adopted, they necessarily lead to confusion. Reasoning from the past to the present, it is not too much to infer that a student of Chemistry must be prepared for a new crop of systematic names, and a new classification of elements and compounds, every ten years. Our intention in the preparation of this volume has been, not to furnish a Treatise on the Science, but to provide the student, and general reader, with a plain introduction to the subject. With ample materials at our disposal to produce two volumes in place of one, we have studiously endeavored to compress within these pages, a selection of the more important facts and doctrines of Modern Chemistry. We have adopted for the explanation of these facts, that simple chemical language which has found acceptance in the Schools and Colleges of Great Britain, France, and Germany, as well as in the best treatises on the Science. In addition to the general properties of bodies, we have attached to the description of each substance, a summary of its most important characters, with an account of the special tests required for its detec tion. The student will thus have in this book a Manual of practical chemistry. As an adjunct to this branch of the Science, the subject of practical toxicology has been introduced in reference to the most important poisons, and the processes for their detection. We have also treated, as fully as our space would permit. The chemical principles on which photography is based, and have given some practical rules for the guidance of those who wish to apply their chemical knowledge to this interesting art.
