Book excerpt: This Dictionary provides an explanation of the main ideas of and concepts central to chemistry. Each entry in this A-Z resource begins with a clear, one-sentence definition that explains why the term is important. These sentences are followed by a fuller explanation and, where appropriate, examples, diagrams, tables and equations. Key terms such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, the chemical industry, and qualitative analysis tell the user about the main features of important aspects of chemistry, with cross-references leading to related terms in each field. Other entries give a historical perspective, showing in outline how important themes of chemistry have developed.

Book Teaching Chemistry Around the World

Download or read book Teaching Chemistry Around the World written by Björn Risch and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2010 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As teachers we often tend to expect other countries to teach chemistry in much the same way as we do, but educational systems differ widely. At Bielefeld University we started a project to analyse the approach to chemical education in different countries from all over the world: Teaching Chemistry around the World. 25 countries have participated in the project. The resulting country studies are presented in this book. This book may be seen as a contribution to make the structure of chemistry teaching in numerous countries more transparent and to facilitate communication between these countries. Especially in the case of the school subject chemistry, which is very unpopular on the one hand and occupies an exceptional position on the other hand – due to its relevance to jobs and everyday life and most notably due to its importance for innovation capacity and problem solving – we have to learn from each others’ educational systems.

Book Shaping Tomorrow s World

Download or read book Shaping Tomorrow s World written by Elke Seefried and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaping Tomorrow’s World tells the crucial story of how futures studies developed in West Germany, Europe, the US and within global futures networks from the 1940s to the 1980s. It charts the emergence of different approaches and thought styles within the field ranging from Cold War defense intellectuals such as Herman Kahn to critical peace activists like Robert Jungk. Engaging with the challenges of the looming nuclear war, the changing phases of the Cold War, ‘1968’, and the growing importance of both the Global South and environmentalism, this book argues that futures scholars actively contributed to these processes of change. This multiple award-winning study combines national and transnational perspectives to present a unique history of envisioning, forecasting, and shaping the future.

Book The Future of Atmospheric Chemistry Research

Download or read book The Future of Atmospheric Chemistry Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world is changing at an accelerating rate. The global human population has grown from 6.1 billion to 7.1 billion in the last 15 years and is projected to reach 11.2 billion by the end of the century. The distribution of humans across the globe has also shifted, with more than 50 percent of the global population now living in urban areas, compared to 29 percent in 1950. Along with these trends, increasing energy demands, expanding industrial activities, and intensification of agricultural activities worldwide have in turn led to changes in emissions that have altered the composition of the atmosphere. These changes have led to major challenges for society, including deleterious impacts on climate, human and ecosystem health. Climate change is one of the greatest environmental challenges facing society today. Air pollution is a major threat to human health, as one out of eight deaths globally is caused by air pollution. And, future food production and global food security are vulnerable to both global change and air pollution. Atmospheric chemistry research is a key part of understanding and responding to these challenges. The Future of Atmospheric Chemistry Research: Remembering Yesterday, Understanding Today, Anticipating Tomorrow summarizes the rationale and need for supporting a comprehensive U.S. research program in atmospheric chemistry; comments on the broad trends in laboratory, field, satellite, and modeling studies of atmospheric chemistry; determines the priority areas of research for advancing the basic science of atmospheric chemistry; and identifies the highest priority needs for improvements in the research infrastructure to address those priority research topics. This report describes the scientific advances over the past decade in six core areas of atmospheric chemistry: emissions, chemical transformation, oxidants, atmospheric dynamics and circulation, aerosol particles and clouds, and biogeochemical cycles and deposition. This material was developed for the NSF's Atmospheric Chemistry Program; however, the findings will be of interest to other agencies and programs that support atmospheric chemistry research.

Book Chemistry Today and Tomorrow

Download or read book Chemistry Today and Tomorrow written by Ronald Breslow and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly readable book, written in nontechnical language, surveys the vast field of chemistry by looking at the practical contributions that chemistry makes to civilized life and by explaining how chemists make these contributions. Its eight chapters discuss broad disciplines of chemistry, such as medicinal, environmental, or industrial chemistry, but always with an eye for the interesting detail and for the human activity that lies behind these fields. Written in a lively question-and-answer format by award-winning teacher and researcher Ronald Breslow, recipient of the U.S. National Medal of Science in 1991, this book examines chemistry as it exists today but also identifies the primary challenges and problems that remain for the future. Young people thinking about scientific careers, parents and guidance counselors, or any readers curious about how chemistry affects the world they live in will benefit from this insightful book.

Book Designing the Molecular World

Download or read book Designing the Molecular World written by Philip Ball and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most exciting scientific developments in recent years have come not from theoretical physicists, astronomers, or molecular biologists but instead from the chemistry lab. Chemists have created superconducting ceramics for brain scanners, designed liquid crystal flat screens for televisions and watch displays, and made fabrics that change color while you wear them. They have fashioned metals from plastics, drugs from crude oil, and have pinpointed the chemical pollutants affecting our atmosphere and are now searching for remedies for the imperiled planet. Philip Ball, an editor for the prestigious magazine Nature, lets the lay reader into the world of modern chemistry. Here, for example, chemists find new uses for the improbable buckminsterfullerene molecules--60-atom carbon soccerballs, dubbed "buckyballs"--which seem to have applications for everything from lubrication to medicine to electronics. The book is not intended as an introduction to chemistry, but as an accessible survey of recent developments throughout many of the major fields allied with chemistry: from research in traditional areas such as crystallography and spectroscopy to entirely new fields of study such as molecular electronics, artificial enzymes, and "smart" polymer gels. Ball's grand tour along the leading edge of scientific discovery will appeal to all curious readers, with or without any scientific training, to chemistry students looking for future careers, and to practicing chemical researchers looking for information on other specialties within their discipline.
