Book The Union of Chemistry and Physics

Download or read book The Union of Chemistry and Physics written by Hinne Hettema and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the interrelationship between chemistry and physics, and especially the role played by quantum chemistry as a theory in between these two disciplines. The author uses structuralist approach to explore the overlap between the two sciences, looking at their theoretical and ontological borrowings as well as their continuity. The starting point of this book is that there is at least a form of unity between chemistry and physics, where the reduction relation is conceived as a special case of this unity. However, matters are never concluded so simply within philosophy of chemistry, as significant problems exist around a number of core chemical ideas. Specifically, one cannot take the obvious success of quantum theories as outright support for a reductive relationship. Instead, in the context of a suitably adapted Nagelian framework for reduction, modern chemistry's relationship to physics is constitutive. The results provided by quantum chemistry, in partic ular, have significant consequences for chemical ontology. This book is ideal for students, scholars and academics from the field of Philosophy of Science, and particularly for those with an interest in Philosophy of Chemistry and Physics.

Book Aspects of Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Aspects of Organic Chemistry written by Gerhard Quinkert and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling molecular structures is a useful tool for the description, classification and understanding of molecules – species, which have already been synthesized, and others existing only in the imagination of the chemist. The first part of the four–volume series ′Aspects of Organic Chemistry′ focuses on molecular structure, especially that of nucleid acids and proteins. The authors, a team of internationally recognized specialists, present a modern interdisciplinary concept between chemistry – and biology – an approach, which proved to be useful in university education. A unique book, important for both lecturers and students. Subjects of the three remaining volumes are ′Reactivity′, ′Synthesis′ and ′Methods of Structure Elucidation′.

Book Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry

Download or read book Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry written by Eric Scerri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophy of chemistry has emerged in recent years as a new and autonomous field within the Anglo-American philosophical tradition. With the development of this new discipline, Eric Scerri and Grant Fisher's "Essays in the Philosophy of Chemistry" is a timely and definitive guide to all current thought in this field. This edited volume will serve to map out the distinctive features of the field and its connections to the philosophies of the natural sciences and general philosophy of science more broadly. It will be a reference for students and professional alike. Both the philosophy of chemistry and philosophies of scientific practice alike reflect the splitting of analytical and continental scholastic traditions, and some philosophers are turning for inspiration from the familiar resources of analytical philosophy to influences from the continental tradition and pragmatism. While philosophy of chemistry is practiced very much within the familiar analytical tradition, it is also capable of trail-blazing new philosophical approaches. In such a way, the seemingly disparate disciplines such as the "hard sciences" and philosophy become much more linked.

Book Carotenoid Chemistry and Biochemistry

Download or read book Carotenoid Chemistry and Biochemistry written by George Britton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carotenoid Chemistry and Biochemistry covers the proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Carotenoids, held in Liverpool, United Kingdome on July 26-31, 1981. This symposium highlights the interest in biochemical and biological aspects of carotenes. This book is organized into 25 chapters including chapters on carotenoid chemistry, their structures, synthesis and physical methods, with emphasis on their stereochemistry. Other chapters deal with the chemistry of complexes between carotenoids or retinoids and protein, the novel blue carotenoproteins, and the visual pigments and the nutritionally important retinol-binding proteins. The discussions then shift to animal carotenoids, carotenoid metabolism and transformations, including interesting stereochemical findings. This book also reviews studies of carotenoids in photosynthesis, the industrial importance of carotenoids, medical aspects, particularly the use of carotenoids in treatment against skin photosensitivity and their possible role in protection against cancer. The remaining chapters examine the effects of chemicals on carotenoid biosynthesis and its relevance to herbicide design. This book will be of value to carotenoid scientists and researchers.
