Book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V1

Download or read book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V1 written by J Anderson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption and Reactions on Metallic Films, Volume 1 is a six-chapter text that describes the role of evaporated metal films in advancing the understanding of the metal-gas interface chemistry. Chapter 1 presents electron microscopy and diffraction studies and their contributions in elucidating the growth and structure of polycrystalline and epitaxially grown films. Chapter 2 describes the techniques of preparation and characterization of metallic films and examines the heats of adsorption, electrical conductivity, surface area, and sticking probabilities of such films. Chapter 3 discusses the strength of pairwise interactions; the influence of the intermetallic bond on the equilibrium shape of metal crystallites; the bonding of individual metal atoms to different crystallographic planes; the interaction of metal atoms and crystallites with non-conducting substrates; and the effects of residual gases on this interaction. Chapters 4 and 5 address the adsorption of metallic films, with an emphasis on general trends in adsorptive and electronic properties of bulk metals. These chapters also discuss the effects of adsorption on the electrical conductance of island-like and coherent films and on the ferromagnetic properties of films. Chapter 6 evaluates the application of infrared spectroscopy to the studies of the surfaces of metal films and the use of the available infrared spectroscopic data in reconciling the results of adsorption studies on oxide-supported metal particles with those obtained with clean evaporated metal films prepared under ultra high vacuum conditions. Research scientists and graduate students who are interested in the fundamentals of adsorption and catalysis will find this volume invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a wide variety of sophisticated techniques have been developed for the preparation and characterisation of single crystal solid surfaces and for the study of adsorption phenomena on these surfaces. Several books and review collections that describe these techniques and their development have already been published. However, the very recent consolidation that has taken place with these techniques has been far less extensively reviewed. Moreover, there has been a shift of emphasis from technique development to application, often of several parallel techniques. A description of these changes thus provides the information regarding modern surface adsorption and reaction processes. The present volume complements Volume 3B. It contains reviews of the present knowledge of a range of chemisorption systems. These reviews illustrate the depth of understanding developed through application of the techniques and principles outlined in the first two volumes. Each author has made major contributions to the subject under review. The topics cover hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and carbon monoxide adsorption on metal surfaces.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine that a young physicist would approach a granting agen cy and propose to contribute to heterogeneous catalysis by studying the heat conductivity of gases in contact with a hot filament. How would he be received now? How would he have been treated sixty years ago ? Yet, more than sixty years ago, Irving Langmuir, through his study of heat transfer from a tungsten filament, uncovered most of the fundamental ideas which are used to-day by the scientific com munity in pure and applied heterogeneous catalysis. Through his work with what were for the first time "clean" metal surfaces, Langmuir formulated during a period of a little over ten years un til the early thirties, the concepts of chemisorption, monolayer, adsorption sites, adsorption isotherm, sticking probability, cata lytic mechanisms by way of the interaction between chemisorbed spe cies, behavior of non-uniform surfaces and repulsion between adsor bed dipoles. It is fair to say that many of these ideas constituting the first revolution in surface chemistry have since been refined through thousands of investigations. Countless papers have been pu blished on the subject of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the Langmuir catalytic kinetics and the Langmuir site-exclusion adsorp tion kinetics. The refinements have been significant. ThE original concepts in their primitive or amended form are used everyday by catalytic chemists and chemical engineers allover the world in their treatment of experimental data, design of reactors or inven tion of new processes.

Book Characterization of Metal and Polymer Surfaces V1

Download or read book Characterization of Metal and Polymer Surfaces V1 written by Lieng-Huang Lee and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterization of Metal and Polymer Surfaces, Volume 1: Metal Surfaces presents the proceedings of the Symposium on Advances in Characterization of Metal and Polymer Surfaces, held in New York, on April 5–8, 1976. This book provides information pertinent to surface science and discusses the applications of surface analyses to polymer technology. Organized into five parts encompassing 19 chapters, this compilation of papers starts with an overview of the important innovations of surface analyses and discusses the possible applications of each method to polymer technology. This text then explores atom-probe field ion microscopy, which is the most sensitive micro-analytical tool that combines the single atom resolution of a field ion microscope with mass spectrometric single ion identification. Other chapters discuss the application of Mössbauer spectroscopy as a technique for studying corrosion phenomena. The final chapter deals with the capabilities and limitations of the method of inelastic electron tunnelling. This book is a valuable resource for analytical and polymer chemists.

Book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V2

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption and Reactions on Metallic Films, Volume 2 is a four-chapter text that describes the role of evaporated metal films in advancing the understanding of the metal-gas interface chemistry and in understanding of adsorption and catalysis at metal surfaces. This volume first describes film structure and properties, particularly of random polycrystalline films, as well as the concepts of the adsorption and kinetic phenomena. The topic is followed by an overview of the main classes of catalytic reactions that have been studied over evaporated metal film catalysts. A chapter explores the preparation, characterization, structure, and surface properties of alloy films. The theory of the oxidation of metals and the advantages and disadvantages of using thin metal films in oxidation work are considered in the concluding chapter, along with a brief discussion on their use in kinetic and mechanistic studies. Research scientists and graduate students who are interested in the fundamentals of adsorption and catalysis will find this volume invaluable.

Book Chemisorption of Carbon Monoxide on Three Metal Surfaces Ni 111 Pd 111 and Pt 111 A Comparative Study

Download or read book Chemisorption of Carbon Monoxide on Three Metal Surfaces Ni 111 Pd 111 and Pt 111 A Comparative Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one-third coverage of carbon monoxide, a (3 x 3)R30 deg low energy electron diffraction (LEED) pattern has been observed on Ni(111), Pd(111) and Pt(111). Interestingly, the C-O stretching frequency indicates three completely different adsorption sites; a 2-fold bridge site for Ni(111), a 3-fold site for Pd(111), and an on-top site for Pt(111). As the coverage increases to one-half, a c(4x2) Leed pattern appears. For Ni(111) and pd (111), the adsorbate seems to prefer the 2-fold site. On Pt(111), half of the chemisorbed CO sits on the on- top site while the other half is located at the 2-fold site. Further increase in coverage results in titled CO molecules on Pt(111) and adsorption of CO at the on-top site of Ni(111) and Pd(111). To rationalize these observations, we carried out extended Huckel calculations within the tight-binding formalism. Our discussion is augmented by conceptual tools such as density of states and crystal orbital overlap population. We also examine the question of the adequacy of the Blyholder model in describing the adsorbate-surface interaction. (js).
