Download or read book Chemisorption And Reactions On Metallic Films V1 written by J Anderson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption and Reactions on Metallic Films, Volume 1 is a six-chapter text that describes the role of evaporated metal films in advancing the understanding of the metal-gas interface chemistry. Chapter 1 presents electron microscopy and diffraction studies and their contributions in elucidating the growth and structure of polycrystalline and epitaxially grown films. Chapter 2 describes the techniques of preparation and characterization of metallic films and examines the heats of adsorption, electrical conductivity, surface area, and sticking probabilities of such films. Chapter 3 discusses the strength of pairwise interactions; the influence of the intermetallic bond on the equilibrium shape of metal crystallites; the bonding of individual metal atoms to different crystallographic planes; the interaction of metal atoms and crystallites with non-conducting substrates; and the effects of residual gases on this interaction. Chapters 4 and 5 address the adsorption of metallic films, with an emphasis on general trends in adsorptive and electronic properties of bulk metals. These chapters also discuss the effects of adsorption on the electrical conductance of island-like and coherent films and on the ferromagnetic properties of films. Chapter 6 evaluates the application of infrared spectroscopy to the studies of the surfaces of metal films and the use of the available infrared spectroscopic data in reconciling the results of adsorption studies on oxide-supported metal particles with those obtained with clean evaporated metal films prepared under ultra high vacuum conditions. Research scientists and graduate students who are interested in the fundamentals of adsorption and catalysis will find this volume invaluable.

Book Chemisorption and Reactivity on Supported Clusters and Thin Films

Download or read book Chemisorption and Reactivity on Supported Clusters and Thin Films written by R.M. Lambert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis provides the backbone of the world's chemical and oil industries. The innate complexity of practical catalytic systems suggests that useful progress should be achievable by investigating key aspects of catalysis by experimental studies on idealised model systems. Thin films and supported clusters are two promising types of model system that can be used for this purpose, since they mimic important aspects of the properties of practical dispersed catalysts. Similarly, appropriate theoretical studies of chemisorption and surface reaction clusters or extended slab systems can provide valuable information on the factors that underlie bonding and catalytic activity. This volume describes such experimental and theoretical approaches to the surface chemistry and catalytic behaviour of metals, metal oxides and metal/metal oxide systems. An introduction to the principles and main themes of heterogeneous catalysis is followed by detailed accounts of the application of modern experimental and theoretical techniques to fundamental problems. The application of advanced experimental methods is complemented by a full description of theoretical procedures, including Hartree-Fock, density functional and similar techniques. The relative merits of the various approaches are considered and directions for future progress are indicated.

Book Metal Catalysed Reactions of Hydrocarbons

Download or read book Metal Catalysed Reactions of Hydrocarbons written by Geoffrey C. Bond and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-03 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book, drawing on the author’s lifetime experience, critically evaluates the extensive literature on the field of Metal-Catalysed Reactions of Hydrocarbons. Emphasis is placed on reaction mechanisms involving hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, skeletal and positional isomerisation, and exchange reactions. The motivation for fundamental research in heterogeneous catalysis is to identify the physicochemical characteristics of active centres for the reaction being studied, to learn how these may be modified or manipulated to improve the desired behavior of the catalyst, and to recognize and control those aspects of the catalyst's structure that limit its overall performance. By restricting the subject of the book to hydrocarbons, Bond has progressively developed the subject matter to include areas of importance both to researchers and to those working in the industry.

Download or read book Convex Optimization written by Arto Ruud and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, it has been recognized that advanced image processing techniques provide valuable information to physicians for the diagnosis, image guided therapy and surgery, and monitoring of human diseases. Convex Optimization: Theory, Methods and Applications introduces novel and sophisticated mathematical problems which encourage the development of advanced optimization and computing methods, especially convex optimization. The authors go on to study Steffensen-King-type methods of convergence to approximate a locally unique solution of a nonlinear equation and also in problems of convex optimization. Real-world applications are also provided. The following study is focused on the design and testing of a Matlab code of the Frank-Wolfe algorithm. The Nesterov step is proposed in order to accelerate the algorithm, and the results of some numerical experiments of constraint optimization are also provided. Lagrangian methods for numerical solutions to constrained convex programs are also explored. For enhanced algorithms, the traditional Lagrange multiplier update is modified to take a soft reflection across the zero boundary. This, coupled with a modified drift expression, is shown to yield improved performance. Next, Newtons mesh independence principle was used to solve a certain class of optimal design problems from earlier studies. Motivated by optimization considerations, the authors show that under the same computational cost, a finer mesh independence principle can be given than before. This compilation closes with a presentation on a local convergence analysis for eighthorder variants of HansenPatricks family for approximating a locally unique solution of a nonlinear equation. The radius of convergence and computable error bounds on the distances involved are also provided.

Book Kinetics of Metal Gas Interactions at Low Temperatures

Download or read book Kinetics of Metal Gas Interactions at Low Temperatures written by Eckehard Fromm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents experimental data and recent results of model calculations on the formation of natural oxide film on metal surfaces and of metal hydride formation. Such films are responsible for corrosion, friction, and wear of metallic materials. Describing mostly the authors own research, this monograph gives an overview of models suitable for metal-gas reactions and demonstrates how complex metal-gas interactions can be analyzed by standard procedures of chemical kinetics. The book, and the data and equations it contains, will be useful to researchers in surface science, condensed-matter physics, and materials science.

Book Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces written by Richard I. Masel and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996-03-22 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces As with other books in the field, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces describes what occurs when gases come in contact with various solid surfaces. But, unlike all the others, it also explains why. While the theory of surface reactions is still under active development, the approach Dr. Richard Masel takes in this book is to outline general principles derived from thermodynamics and reaction rate theory that can be applied to reactions on surfaces, and to indicate ways in which these principles may be applied. The book also provides a comprehensive treatment of the latest quantitative surface modeling techniques with numerous examples of their use in the fields of chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and materials science. A valuable working resource and an excellent graduate-level text, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides readers with: * A detailed look at the latest advances in understanding and quantifying reactions on surfaces * In-depth reviews of all crucial background material * 40 solved examples illustrating how the methods apply to catalysis, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electrochemistry, and more * 340 problems and practice exercises * Sample computer programs * Universal plots of many key quantities * Detailed, class-tested derivations to help clarify key results The recent development of quantitative techniques for modeling surface reactions has led to a number of exciting breakthroughs in our understanding of what happens when gases come in contact with solid surfaces. While many books have appeared describing various experimental modeling techniques and the results obtained through their application, until now, there has been no single-volume reference devoted to the fundamental principles governing the processes observed. The first book to focus on governing principles rather than experimental techniques or specific results, Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces provides students and professionals with a quantitative treatment of the application of principles derived from the fields of thermodynamics and reaction rate theory to the investigation of gas adsorption and reaction on solid surfaces. Writing for a broad-based audience including, among others, chemical engineers, chemists, and materials scientists, Dr. Richard I. Masel deftly balances basic background in areas such as statistical mechanics and kinetics with more advanced applications in specialized areas. Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces was also designed to provide readers an opportunity to quickly familiarize themselves with all of the important quantitative surface modeling techniques now in use. To that end, the author has included all of the key equations involved as well as numerous real-world illustrations and solved examples that help to illustrate how the equations can be applied. He has also provided computer programs along with universal plots that make it easy for readers to apply results to their own problems with little computational effort. Principles of Adsorption and Reaction on Solid Surfaces is a valuable working resource for chemical engineers, physical chemists, and materials scientists, and an excellent text for graduate students in those disciplines.

Book Chemisorption

Download or read book Chemisorption written by Matthan Norup and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemisorption: Properties, Reactions and Uses opens by presenting chemisorption analysis by a pulse flow system for determining the metal nanosize for different heterogeneous catalysts. The authors show some examples of palladium, nickel, platinum, copper and gold nanoparticles supported on different supports, and discuss potentialities, criticalities and applicability of the technique.Following this, the synthesis of titanium oxide coatings on a high-porosity silicas surface with a regular pore structure was studied using a thermogravimetric setup with a McBain balance and atomic force microscopy. The kinetic dependences of chemisorption processes used in the molecular layering method were determined, and the difference in flow mechanisms and results of coating synthesis on meso- and microporous silicas are presented. The salt-ammonia chemisorption cycle has been extensively developed in many fields such as low-grade heat driven refrigeration, heat pump, thermal storage and power generation. As such, the kinetic models of salt-ammonia chemisorption were reviewed and discussed in this work, and the values of kinetic parameters in different models were summarized and listed for ammonia chemisorption. In the concluding study, heterophase textured films of vanadium dioxide on single-crystal silicon substrates have been synthesized by the sol-gel method from solutions of triethoxyvanadyl VO(OEt)3 in methyl cellosolve CH3OCH2CH2OH. The effect of ozone and ethanol vapor chemisorption on the parameters of the semiconductor-metal phase transition in vanadium dioxide VO2(B) are also studied.
