Book Chemical Reactions Studied by Crossed Beam Techniques

Download or read book Chemical Reactions Studied by Crossed Beam Techniques written by G. G. Volpi and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparatus for total scattering cross section measurements was built. Energy dependence of total elastic cross sections for collisions between D2 and small hydrocarbons were measured and L.J.(12.6) potential parameters were determined. A suitable beam of hydrogen atoms was produced and absolute total cross section for H-Ar collisions were determined. Absolute cross sections for anelastic collisions between alkali ions and sodium atoms also were determined with an apparatus where the molecular beam technique is coupled with spectroscopic observations. Book Dynamics of Molecular Collisions

Download or read book Dynamics of Molecular Collisions written by W. Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activity in any theoretical area is usually stimulated by new experimental techniques and the resulting opportunity of measuring phenomena that were previously inaccessible. Such has been the case in the area under consideration he re beginning about fifteen years aga when the possibility of studying chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams captured the imagination of physical chemists, for one could imagine investigating chemical kinetics at the same level of molecular detail that had previously been possible only in spectroscopic investigations of molecular stucture. This created an interest among chemists in scattering theory, the molecular level description of a bimolecular collision process. Many other new and also powerful experimental techniques have evolved to supplement the molecular be am method, and the resulting wealth of new information about chemical dynamics has generated the present intense activity in molecular collision theory. During the early years when chemists were first becoming acquainted with scattering theory, it was mainly a matter of reading the physics literature because scattering experiments have long been the staple of that field. It was natural to apply the approximations and models that had been developed for nuclear and elementary particle physics, and although some of them were useful in describing molecular collision phenomena, many were not.

Book State to State Dynamical Research in the F H2 Reaction System

Download or read book State to State Dynamical Research in the F H2 Reaction System written by Zefeng Ren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses two important and also challenging issues in the research of chemical reaction dynamics of F+H2 system. One is to probe the reaction resonance and the other is to determine the extent of the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA) experimentally. The author introduces a state-of-the-art crossed molecular beam-scattering apparatus using a hydrogen atom Rydberg "tagging" time-of-flight method, and presents thorough state-to-state experimental studies to address the above issues. The author also describes the observation of the Feshbach resonance in the F+H2 reaction, a precise measurement of the differential cross section in the F+HD reaction, and validation of a new accurate potential energy surface with spectroscopic accuracy. Moreover, the author determines the reactivity ratio between the ground state F(2P3/2) and the excited state F*(2P1/2) in the F+D2 reaction, and exploits the breakdown of BOA in the low collision energy.

Book Experimental Chemical Kinetics

Download or read book Experimental Chemical Kinetics written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unfolding of molecular beam scattering data to yield cross sections, the interpretation of the amplitudes of the glory oscillations in the velocity dependence of the total cross section and the construction of a simple molecular beam apparatus for student experiments on reactive scattering are described in publications. Inelastic scattering of CsCl and CsI by Ar and Xe are studied over a range of relative kinetic energy of 1 to 2 kcal mole/sup -1/ at several laboratory angles. The inelastic cross sections are a substantial fraction of the elastic cross sections at large angles. Beams of halogen containing molecules produce negative ions when they hit surfaces of Nb and LaB/sub 6/. On the latter the efficiency of formation of negative ions can be as great as 0.1 for iodides and still larger for bromides. Experiments have shown that a beam of CH/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ molecules can be accelerated without significant attenuation by interaction with a beam of electrons. The increase in velocity was up to 20%. Attempts to study the elastic cross sections for the scattering of halogen atoms by the rare gases and the reactive cross sections for the scattering of molecules with internal excitation are continuing. A list of publications is included. (auth).

Book Research in Physics and Chemistry

Download or read book Research in Physics and Chemistry written by Frank J. Malina and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in Physics and Chemistry contains the proceedings of the Third Lunar International Laboratory Symposium organized by the International Academy of Astronautics at the XVIIIth International Astronautical Congress, held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on September 28, 1967. The papers focus on the technical problems related to the construction of a manned research center on the Moon and consider the fields in which research should initially be undertaken. This book is comprised of nine chapters and begins with an an overview of the physical and chemical properties of the Moon, paying particular attention to the lunar surface and the various types of particles and rays impinging upon it. The reader is then introduced to anticipated vacuum conditions on the Moon and aspects of physico-chemical research in a lunar laboratory. Subsequent chapters discuss the use of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze organic matter on the Moon; investigations of the physical and mechanical properties of the Moon's soil from Luna 13; molecular beam experiments in the lunar environment; and metagalactic light measurements from the Moon. The last chapter describes the apparatus, the results, and the system to be used in a proposed optical workshop and repair facility to be established on the Moon. This monograph will be a useful resource for physicists, chemists, and space scientists as well as students and research workers interested in the physics and chemistry of the Moon.

Book Selectivity in Chemical Reactions

Download or read book Selectivity in Chemical Reactions written by J.C. Whitehead and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this Workshop on "Selectivity in Chemical Reactions" was to examine the specific preferences exhibited by simple chemical reactions with regards to reagents having particular energy states, symmetries, alignment and orientation and the resulting formation of certain products with their corresponding energies, states, alignment and polarisation. Such problems come close to the ultimate goal of reaction dynamics of being able to determine experimentally and theoretically state-to-state cross sections and stereochemical effects under well defined and characterised conditions. There are many examples of highly selective and specific processes to be found in atmospheric and combustion chemistry and the production of population inversions amongst vibrational and electronic states lies at the heart of the development of chemical laser systems. Only when we can understand the fundamental processes that underlie the selectivity in the formation of products in a chemical reaction and the specific requirements of initial states of the reagents, can we expect to be able to develop the explanatory and predictive tools necessary to apply the subject to the development of new laser systems, efficient combustion schemes and specific methods of chemical synthesis, to the control of atmospheric pollution and to all problems in which it is necessary to direct the outcome of a chemical reaction in a specific way. The brief given to the Workshop was to critically review the field, to discuss the present limitations and difficulties and to identify new directions.

The most relevant treatise then available to students was Mott and Massey's classic The Theory of Atomic Collisions, * but, as the title implies, it dealt only sparingly with the special features that arise when at least one of the collision partners is a molecule.
