Book Chemical and Cellular Architecture

Download or read book Chemical and Cellular Architecture written by Abel Lajtha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the completion of the first edition of this series, this editor thought that a new edition would not be warranted in less than IS, perhaps 20, years, but it seems that we live in a time in which rapid changes are the norm and findings in a field such as neurochemistry develop exponentially. The task of a future editor attempting to get a comprehensive neurochemical handbook for the year 2000 would be even less enviable, but by then information processing may be very different. The approach, the design, and the areas covered by each volume and each chapter are necessarily arbitrary, and it is likely that other editors or authors would have approached the coverage or the organization in a different manner. It is hoped, however, that readers will find the series helpful for beginning or for continuing work. There may be some overlap among the various chapters, but insisting on single coverage of an area would at times have restricted treatment to only one point of view and might have truncated and hurt the logical flow of some of the chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Architecture and Dynamics provides a definitive resource for (bio)physicists and molecular and cellular biologists whose research involves an understanding of the organization of the genome and the mechanisms of its proper reading, maintenance, and replication by the cell. This book brings together the biochemical and physical characteristics of genome organization, providing a relevant framework in which to interpret the control of gene expression and cell differentiation. It includes work from a group of international experts, including biologists, physicists, mathematicians, and bioinformaticians who have come together for a comprehensive presentation of the current developments in the nuclear dynamics and architecture field. The book provides the uninitiated with an entry point to a highly dynamic, but complex issue, and the expert with an opportunity to have a fresh look at the viewpoints advocated by researchers from different disciplines. - Highlights the link between the (bio)chemistry and the (bio)physics of chromatin - Deciphers the complex interplay between numerous biochemical factors at task in the nucleus and the physical state of chromatin - Provides a collective view of the field by a large, diverse group of authors with both physics and biology backgrounds

Book Chemical Architecture of the Nervous System

Download or read book Chemical Architecture of the Nervous System written by Abel Lajtha and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life, either as we think of it in the abstract in its highest sense, or life, as we think of it in terms of a compact living organism, is obviously the result of complex interaction of all of the components of the organism. One could therefore question the advisability of separating out the nervous system for a special detailed study in our age of overspecialization. The main purpose of the present Handbook is not to fragment further our approach or under standing of living phenomena, but, on the contrary, to try to summarize and integrate as much of the available information and thinking on the nervous system as is possible in a limited space. It is difficult to think of an area of modern biology that is more exciting to study and that has greater impor tance for mankind, from any point of view, than the study of the brain and of the nervous system. The influence that understanding of brain function in biological terms can exert on our future is not generally understood in its full impact. Although our ignorance about even the most basic mechanisms in the nervous system is enormous, in recent years our knowledge has made most important advances, and as a consequence great masses of data have been accumulated.

Book excerpt: International Series of Monographs on Pure and Applied Biology: The Plant Cell Wall, Volume 2 is a four-chapter text that covers the botanical aspects of cell wall. This book specifically discusses the cell types and cell walls in vascular plants, as well as the classification and constitution of cell wall. This book deals first with the fractionation, biosynthesis, components, formation regulation, and breakdown of cell wall. These topics are followed by discussions on cell wall polysaccharides, lignin structures, cell wall changes during cell growth, and the analysis of the wall-lysing enzymes. Other chapters examine the types and chemical components of cell wall carbohydrates and the surface processes in lignin polymer formations. A study of the phylogenetic aspects of lignins and lignin synthesis is presented. A chapter is devoted to the classification and features of plant species. The remaining chapter focuses on the non-vascular plants, protista, and metazoa. The book can provide useful information to scientists, botanists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Biochemistry: The Chemical Reactions of Living Cells is a 16-chapter reference source on chemical structures and reactions of living cells. The first three chapters of this book contain introductory material on cell structure, molecular architecture, and energetic. The subsequent chapters examine the allosteric effect of the binding structures of oligomeric enzymes, microtubules, viruses, and muscle. These chapters also describe the structures and chemical properties of membranes and of the surrounding cell coats. The discussions then shift to the general properties of enzymes, the kinetics of chemical reactions, and the various mechanisms employed in enzymatic catalysis. Considerable chapters are devoted to the reaction sequences found in metabolism. These chapters particularly examine the carbohydrate and lipid metabolism; photosynthesis; and biosynthesis and catabolism of an enormous number of nitrogenous compounds. The final chapters highlight the genetic and hormonal control of metabolism, development, and brain function. Biochemistry teachers and students will find this book of great value.

Book Cell Origin Structure and Function

Download or read book Cell Origin Structure and Function written by Joel D. Pardee and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lecture, we will briefly review the principles of physics, central metabolism, and cell biology that make health possible. This exercise is appropriate for those of us who have set before ourselves the problem of understanding and preserving life processes, because it is through the medium of a cell that energy creates life. We are aware that life processes require a complex set of biochemical reactions. But that is not enough. Not only are complex reactions necessary, but superimposed on this essential requirement is the necessity to build and maintain a dynamic cellular structure. Chemical energy builds cells. In this lecture, we will see how cells extract energy from the entropic dissolution of the universe, how the extracted energy is used to build cell structure, and how cell structure determines cell function. Table of Contents: Origin and Energy of Life / How Cells Make a Living / Order From Chaos: Entropy and The River of Time / Capturing Entropy / Cell Architecture / Why Cells are Compartmentalized. The Function of Organelles / Cell Function / The Secretory Pathway / The Golgi Apparatus / Mitochondria / The Cytoskeleton: How Organelles are Organized / Vesicle Transport / Mitosis / Energy and Metabolism / References

Download or read book Cellular Solids written by Lorna J. Gibson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of their classic work on Cellular Solids, the authors have brought the book completely up to date, including new work on processing of metallic and ceramic foams and on the mechanical, electrical and acoustic properties of cellular solids. Data for commercially available foams are presented on material property charts; two new case studies show how the charts are used for selection of foams in engineering design. Over 150 references appearing in the literature since the publication of the first edition are cited. The text summarises current understanding of the structure and mechanical behaviour of cellular materials, and the ways in which they can be exploited in engineering design. Cellular solids include engineering honeycombs and foams (which can now be made from polymers, metals, ceramics and composites) as well as natural materials, such as wood, cork and cancellous bone.

Book Protocell Architecture

Download or read book Protocell Architecture written by Neil Spiller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages architects have attempted to capture the essence of living systems as design inspiration. However, practitioners of the built environment have had to deal with a fundamental split between the artificial urban landscape and nature owing to a technological 'gap' that means architects have been unable to make effective use of biological systems in urban environments. Protocell Architecture is an edition of AD that shows for the first time that contemporary architects can create and construct architectures that are bottom up, synthetically biological, green and have no recourse to shallow bio-mimicry. In the next few decades, synthetic biology is set to have as much, if not more, impact on architecture as cyberspace and the digital. The key to these amazing architectural innovations is the Protocell.
